August 13, 2012 Ivy Tech Last Monday our speaker was Jerrilee Mosier, Chancellor of Ivy Tech. Jerrilee has just finished her second year with Ivy Tech, and her report centered on 4 committees that she established on the local campus. The first committee is what she called Green Sustainability, both for Ivy Tech and for the community. Two accomplishments in this area are the establishment of a garden plot available to students, and an appliance recycling program. A second committee is the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Committee. This group found a need for more science and technical programs and classes, and has established science camps for middle school students. The Globalization Committee, the third group, is focusing on the understanding and tolerance of foreign cultures. Accomplishments in this area include international visits and hosting of international guests, establishing an English as a second language class for students to be taken before entering other colleges in the USA. A fourth initiative is the Service Learning Committee. This group helps to focus individuals on the need to understand that helping other people is essential. Projects in this area include helping with Black Pine Animal Park and the Community Harvest Food Bank. We are very fortunate to have Jerrilee and Ivy Tech in our community!

Gold Standard Jason Daenens and Holli Seabury were recognized for setting the gold standard by visiting Club 1 in Chicago. The Chicago club has been instrumental in helping our club with our current international project in Africa. They also took the opportunity to visit Rotary International Headquarters while in the Chicago area. By the way, Jason reported that the food at the Chicago club was fabulous but the cost is $35! Rotaract Update The Fort Wayne Rotaract Club is going strong. Meetings are the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesdays at 6:30 PM. The 1 st week meeting is at the Holiday Inn across from the Coliseum. The 3 rd week meeting varies in location and is less formal. August events include a cleanup at Memorial Park and a TinCaps game on August 29. If you know someone aged 18-30 who would enjoy meeting other young adults and providing service in the Rotary style, please recommend them for membership! Paul Harris Our latest Paul Harris fellow is Jason Daenens, who was presented with his certificate at the August 6

meeting. In Jason s own words, he joined Rotary and became a Paul Harris fellow not for the recognition but to do hands-on service as opposed to just talking about it. He has seen firsthand the good work of Rotary and the difference we can make locally, nationally and globally. Thank you, Jason, for your contributions, both financially and in service, in support of the Rotary cause! New Member Steve Piekarski was introduced as our newest member on August 6. A former Rotarian, Steve is a 1977 graduate of Indiana University and has been around the area in various capacities. He is Vice President and Manager of Commercial Lending and Transaction Services with Professional Federal Credit Union. Please welcome Steve when you next see him! Washington School Lona Antil announced that August 22 is Back to School Night for Washington School. The principal at Washington School, J. R. Ankenbruck has asked if we would have the picnic early this year so the teachers could meet the parents. We will serve food outside starting at approximately

6:15. Volunteers are needed from 5:15 to 7:30. It's always fun. If you can help for the duration or just an hour, please reply so I can get a count. August Birthdays Bone, Bruce Aug 01 McNair, E. Team Member applications are also being accepted. Team members must be non-rotarian professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 and receive employer approval to participate. Relatives of current Rotarians are not allowed to participate. Complete information can be found on the district website at www.rotary6540.org. See our GSE Committee co-chairs Tim Gibson and Mike Kelly for additional details.
