Wider Reading

General Advice to Students: English Language Read everything you can get your hands on: fiction, non fiction, 21 st C, 20 th C, 19 th C. Try reading 19 th C non fiction (newspaper articles, letters, journals, leaflets, reviews). Non fiction post reading task: consider how the writer has presented the information. How does the writer feel/ think? What methods have they used to get these ideas across? Fiction post reading task: consider how it has been structured to interest the reader. You must consider what happens at the beginning of extract as opposed to the end. Also, why the writer changes focus throughout the text? As well as any structural features you can find: dialogue, cyclical structure, change of perspective etc. Select a short extract (1/ 2 paragraphs). Identify 4 words/phrases within the text that are powerful/ create an image/ tell us how the narrator feels. Answer these questions on these words: What is the significance of these words/ why are they in the text? What do the words/phrases tell you about the text/character/setting? Remember to use accurate subject terminology. Choose an image: Write a story based on the picture/ Write a description suggested by the picture. Include descriptive devices, accurate SPEC, deliberate structure and a range of vocab, punctuation and sentences. Check your work thoroughly.

General Advice to Students English Literature Get a copy of Romeo and Juliet, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde/ A Christmas Carol. You can then make notes in your copy. Create flash cards of themes and characters with key quotes for all texts studied. Make a list of the pivotal / key scenes from the set texts. Choose extracts from scenes and annotate for language features, impact, significance to a theme, character, and the overall outcome of the text. Group all poems from the Power and Conflict cluster into themes and provide quotes to support this. Make a list of all the themes/ characters for each set text. Plan a response to a question on each possibility, referring to specific events, quotes and ideas.
