Comet Connection February 7, 2019 Dear Saint Pius X Family and Friends, Punxsutawney Phil could not have been more spot-on or so it has seemed this week as we have enjoyed unseasonably warm weather with sunny skies. 73 degrees on February 7? I ll take it! During this week s school Mass, we heard an excellent message: Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who leads us in our faith and brings it to perfection: for the sake of the joy which lay ahead of him, he endured the cross, disregarding the shame of it, and has taken his seat at the right of God's throne (Hebrews 12: 1-4). Monsignor elucidated the meaning of the reading in a very familiar way: Keep your eyes on the prize. As Christian people, our faith is reliant on our focus. If we can keep our focus trained on the prize (i.e. Heaven), we are almost sure to stay on the path to salvation. A most amazing factor to help us with our focus is that Jesus leads us in our faith All we have to do is allow the Holy Spirit into our hearts and be willing to follow. Thank you to Mrs. Katrina Hannaum and a very dedicated committee who put together another absolutely wonderful PTO Family Valentine s Dance last Saturday evening. It is so fun to have our families come together, and such a joy to see our younger students dressed up and enjoying a dance with their friends, even if their idea of dancing is running in circles or playing tag on the dance floor! This was an outstanding event. Congratulations to Chris Campbell (8) for winning the Scholastic Scope magazine Sherlock Holmes writing contest! Chris s essay was selected because of his analysis of the way Sherlock uses clues and skills to solve mysteries. Scholastic corporation sent Chris a copy of The Murderers Ape, by Jakob Wegelius, which recently won the August Prize Book of the Year award. The students and staff of SPX sincerely wish Vince Warren (5) the best of luck as he moves on to the Central Piedmont District-level Spelling Bee tonight! Vince takes his keen focus and outstanding spelling skills to the News & Record building, downtown Greensboro, at 6:00 p.m. GO VINCE! Next week is SPX Spirit Week, which includes dress up days, a pep rally (1:30 p.m. on Wednesday), and a plethora of SPX School Comet spirit. Scroll down to see the SPX Spirit Week flyer in this current edition of Comet Connection for details. The PECSAA basketball tournament officially begins next Thursday, FEB 14, and continues through Sunday the 17th. For a complete schedule of games, you can check out the brackets at www.pecsaa.com. Come out and support our Comet basketball teams and cheerleading squads as they go into tournament play! GO COMETS!!! The St. Pius X Catholic School Biennial Gala 2019 committee is working hard to plan an awesome event on Saturday, March 9. The theme of this year s event is Securing Our Future. All proceeds will go toward enhancing our school s safety, security, and climate for our students. Please know that our school is very safe; but I also believe this is an area in which schools can always improve. Through working with a network of specialists, I am finalizing a plan that includes installation of new classrooms doors/hardware, a revitalized and
integrated security system, new drinking fountains/water bottle filling stations, and a range of design features that influence positive building body language and natural access control (e.g. amiable but clear signage, better ways of displaying student artwork, and color schemes or décor that cultivates positive climate and culture). I hope that you have marked your calendars and plan to attend this event. Watch for more information about the St. Pius X Catholic School Biennial Gala 2019, Securing Our Future, during the upcoming weeks. *** Tickets and Sponsorships available at: https://spxschoolevents.wixsite.com/spxgala2019. *** I know that I probably sound repetitive, but I want to thank everyone, again, for all that you do for our school.
