Catholic Cathedral College Newsletter / Pānui o Te Kura Dear Parents and Caregivers, 23 September 2016 Nau mai haere mai. Talofa lava. Malo le lei. Kamusta. On Tuesday of this week Fr John Craddock celebrated a special Mass in St Mary s Pro-Cathedral to confer the Sacraments of Initiation on 17 students. A number of students were baptised, together with two infants, before a large gathering of parents and extended whanau. Others made their First Communion, and were confirmed during the Mass. This was certainly a very special occasion and a reason to celebrate. The main purpose of a Catholic School is to bring students to a deeper relationship with Jesus, and it is through receiving the sacraments that we develop this deeper relationship, and learn to recognise Christ in others. It is important to acknowledge the excellent work of Sr Marietta and Sr Bertha, two Mission Sisters of the Society of Mary who work with Mr Stone and our young people and their families to prepare them for the Sacraments of Initiation. The Sisters worked with this large group of students each Monday after school and visited every family prior to the Mass this week. We are very grateful for the special vocation they have to work in this way. We also thank Ken Joblin who played the organ and led the sung responses through this celebration. Last Friday our Year 7 and 8 Kapa Haka students performed at Hillview Christian School with groups from a number of city schools. We are very grateful to Matua Steve who has worked with our students for the last two years. He has developed their Kapa Haka skills and their sense of pride in our Maori culture. Our students performed well in front of a large crowd. On Wednesday we had a visit from Takirua Productions who performed before our students who are learning Te Reo at various levels in the school. The students were entertained with the programme which was all delivered in Te Reo. We welcome Ms Wendy Crossen back from her time in Samoa, and thank Mr Shane Rose for his contribution in Wendy s absence. This week we farewell Mr Rob Ferguson who has been our art teacher for 10 years. In that time he has been an avid mountain biker, tramper, photographer, and has developed the annual Wearable Arts Show with Marian College. Mr Ferguson has been appointed to a position at the new Rolleston College, and we thank him for all his many areas of contribution at Catholic Cathedral College and wish him well for this next stage of his journey. As the Term draws to a close, I take this opportunity to thank all those who have contributed in so many ways to our community and our Mission. Tony Shaw
Rick Stone DRS - RE Department Ka koa te hunga tohu tangata: e tohungia hoki ratou. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. This week s Mercy Theme - Comfort the Afflicted 1. Oh God, thank you for the love and mercy you show us. Lighten our load, especially when we are faced with terrible tasks. Deliver us from evil, protect us, strengthen us and keep us close. Amen 2. God of all comfort, we pray for those who are hurting and are troubled that you will touch them in ways they can know, feel and understand. Touch each life with tenderness and power and pour down your grace upon grief and truth across terrors. Amen 3. Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Amen Prayers used at assembly this week, prepared by Rachael Fotu. (Student Special Character Leader) Comfort the afflicted and afflict the comforted
Pope Makes Surprise Visits to Neonatal Unit, Hospice In the framework of his Fridays of Mercy, Pope Francis visited a neonatal unit and a hospice for the terminally ill in a Roman hospital. The Pontiff s first visit was to the Accident and Emergency department and to the Neonatal unit of Rome s San Giovanni Hospital. The Pope stopped beside the incubators of twelve new born babies, five of whom are suffering from severe complications, including one set of twins, reported Vatican Radio. Before going on to meet with staff and families at the nursery on the floor above, the Holy Father offered words of comfort and support to all of the parents. Later in the afternoon the Pope visited some 30 terminally ill patients at the Villa Speranza Hospice. With this Friday of Mercy, the Holy Father wanted to give a strong sign of the importance of life, from its first instant to its natural end. The acceptance of life and the guarantee of human dignity at all times of development is a lesson repeatedly stressed by Pope Francis, who, with this dual visit, has given a concrete and tangible sign of the importance of caring for the weakest and most vulnerable in order to show mercy in our lives. Comment This action of Pope Frances raises the question of what new acts of mercy have we done in this Year of Mercy? The Year officially closes in mid-november not that Mercy does, but the Pope challenges us to dwell on the Works of Mercy and emulate him perhaps by visiting the sick or troubled in your locality or hospital. First Sacraments Programme The "First Sacraments programme" concluded with a Mass of Initiation at the Pro Cathedral on Tuesday afternoon. The Celebrant was Fr John Craddock, Parish Priest of the Sancta Maria Parish and College Chaplain. Fr John ensured it was a very special, inclusive Mass and it was a great occasion for all our families and students alike. Two students were unable to attend due to ill health but 15 out of the 17 students who completed the programme all received one or a number of the sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Two students had a younger sibling receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Students had attended the Programme run by Sisters Bertha and Marietta every Monday for nearly two terms. In the depths of winter the Sisters instructed our students and prepared them to receive the sacraments. After the Mass there was a celebration with photos being taken as a group, with their sponsors and Godparents and also with their teachers from the College. Certificates were handed out and everyone enjoyed meeting each other s families and of course eating a wonderful range of finger foods.
Students receiving the sacraments were: Natasha Ansett, Yashdeep Kaur, Phoenix Uri, Shania Toso, Tyrese McGregor, Jason Lasini, Savanna Samson, Earl Jaranilla, Ebony Tara Clark, Luvena Cameron, Alissa Naidoo Champagne Valeros, Ashleigh Willis, Joseph Palmer Aneisha Polglasee, A special thanks to Sister Marietta who visited all the families over two full days as part of the preparation leading up to our students receiving the Sacraments. All families were hospitality personified, welcoming, warm and friendly and very grateful that the sisters had visited and explained the situation about the reception of the Sacraments, and what it means to be a Catholic.

Kapa Haka Cultural Festival Last Friday our year 7 and 8 Kapahaka represented Catholic Cathedral by performing at a schools kapahaka competition, Tuhono which was held at Hillview Christian School. This is the first time that a kapahaka group from Catholic Cathedral College has performed on stage at competition level since the early 1990s. Our 27 strong group had been preparing for this completion all through term 3 and they were very eager to show off their talents. They gave a beautiful but fierce and very polished performance. They were led by Kaitataki Wahine, Ashleigh Willis, Kaitataki Tane, JJ Lasini and tutored by Matua Steve Reid. The whole kapa gave 100% in their performance and were highly commended on their stellar performance and can be very proud of themselves. They had lots of support from whanau who attended the event and loved every minute of it. For some it was their very first experience of kapahaka. Tino pai rawa atu koutou!!
