It has been terrific visiting classrooms and seeing smiling faces and children engaged in their learning. I have loved meeting class mascots and hearing the students discuss our new school values as they have participated in their start up program activities. Our new preps have started without a tear and settled in to school life very smoothly. Well done everyone! School leaders Our Year Six students have had a great start to the year. During camp and the start up program it is reinforced that all of our Year 6 students are leaders of the school and role models to students in younger year levels. The beginning of the year also brings with it an opportunity for our senior students to take on additional responsibilities and leadership positions across the school. I congratulate the following students who have been appointed leadership positions for 2017 and look forward to working with these students and the entire year 6 cohort in their final year. YEAR 6 Camp School Captains Zoe and Miller Junior School Council Captains Maddison and Tyler Benton House Captains Samantha and Luca Jones House Captains Lainie and Ned Baxter House Captains Georgia and Jagg Coolart House Captains Harriet and Deagan ICT Captains Sean and Jackson Sports Captains Corey, Hannah, Sophie and Ben Music Captains Amber, Breanna and Alice Green Team Captains Emily and Emma Last week our grade 6 students attended Camp Woorabinda for an action packed week of outdoor adventure activities. The children enjoyed hiking, flying fox, high ropes, canoeing, archery and environmental studies. Our students had a fabulous time and are to be congratulated for their excellent attitude and for making the most of every opportunity. It was an extremely hot week with temperatures over 30 most days even reaching nearly 40 on one of the days. Despite the heat the children gave everything a go, particularly enjoying a hose down and paddle in the lake to cool off. Staff at the camp commented on our student s exceptional behaviour and positive attitude. Well done grade 6!

Parents on School Council help to shape the direction of the school and have a direct influence on the quality of education provided for our students.it is time for our annual School Council elections. Information regarding the role of School Council and the process involved in becoming a member has been sent home with the children today. We are currently calling for nominations for 3 parent positions and 1 DET position. Please refer to the additional information sent home today if you are thinking of nominating and would like to become a part of our School Council for 2017. Nomination forms are available at the office on request and are due in by 4 pm Thursday 23rd February.

PFA AGM Special thanks to our PFA for 2016 who did a wonderful job of raising over $19 000 to go towards school improvements. In the past few years PFA efforts have made a substantial contribution towards improvements to our grounds such as the sand pit, new prep/one playground equipment, oak tree deck and artificial grass area. During 2015 money raised went towards over 1000 library books, take home books and guided readers. Last year our focus was on building our science program and installing a new grade 5 and 6 playground. We must also congratulate the PFA for organising community events such as the mothers and fathers day breakfast event and our 125 th Birthday Celebration. Our PFA recently had their 2017 AGM. We thank Jenny Johnson for once again accepting the position as PFA president, Robyn Bull as treasurer and Yasra Sebode as secretary. Thank you to the small group of parents who attended this meeting. You are an amazing group of parents who volunteer your own time to support all of the children at our school. We would like to encourage new parents to join our PFA. It is a fabulous opportunity to meet new people, organise community social events and help to raise the funds needed to provide the best possible learning environment and resources for our students. Student information night Our beginning of year parent/teacher interviews started yesterday and will continue today, Thursday 16 th February. These are a meet and greet session and are an opportunity to meet your child/children s teacher, build that important partnership between school and home and exchange any background information that may assist teachers at the start of the year. We hope you have taken advantage of this valuable opportunity to start this important parent /teacher partnership by meeting your child s teacher on this night. If you have been unable to attend or need to follow up from your conversation with your child s teacher please call the office to make an appointment. Our teachers also value this partnership and will give you a call back to make a time to meet. Working with Children Cards Each year School Council approves a list of volunteers working in the school. This will be presented at a School Council meeting at the end of this term. It is our school policy that any parents who are participating in programs that have a high level of contact with students require a Working With Children Card. Examples of this include: Camps, excursions, canteen roster, any activities in which a volunteer s own child is not involved or any situation in which a volunteer may have unsupervised contact with a child. For this reason we require all parent helpers to have a Working With Children Card. It is free for volunteers and is available through an online application process at the website below. Once you have filled in the online application form, you need to go to a participating Australia Post retail outlet to lodge your application. www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home. Our school will then be sent a copy of your Working With Children Card for our records. These cards are valid for 5 years. Student Accident Insurance I consider Tyabb Primary School to be an extremely safe and secure environment but when young children are out playing or even conducting supervised activities they can have accidents. We have in place strict guidelines as to how activities are conducted and document all possible risks. The best laid plans can always go astray with unforeseen or unavoidable events. The Department of Education does not cover schools and children for medical and accident insurance. In the event of a serious accident my staff are instructed to take all reasonable action to ensure the welfare of students. This includes the calling of an ambulance. The cost for an ambulance call out can be considerable from $600 - $3000. This cost is not compensated by the school or department and it is the legal responsibility of the guardians to make good any payments. I urge you to take out ambulance cover to safe guard you from any possible financial hardship. Student accident insurance policies are also available from some commercial insurers. A couple of reminders for the Tyabb Community: Children need to be at school for our first bell at 8:50am ready for the start of the school day at 9.00am. Children arriving late to school, after 9.00am must be signed in by a parent/guardian at the office. Children are not to come in to the office for a late pass without a parent/guardian. Teachers are on yard duty before school from 8:45 to 9:00 and after school from 3:30 to 3:50. No child should be at school at times earlier or later than those listed here as the yard is not supervised. Our school approved wide brimmed hats are compulsory whenever outside during the sunsmart period from the beginning of September until end of April. All visitors to the school after the start and before the end of the school day must go to the front office and sign in. This includes parent helpers. Our school uniform policy requires students to wear black or white school shoes or runners. Fluoro runners and laces are not a part of our uniform policy and as such students should not be wearing them. Black tights or leggings are not a part of our school uniform and should not be worn under skorts or school dresses. The following stores support our school by providing a commission on sales Tyabb Primary School Bulletin:16 th February, 2017 Page 3
