CONTENT STANDARD 01: By speaking, writing, and/or signing, etc., students will express themselves in a culturally appropriate manner for many purposes. I, II, III, IV CAREER READINESS: 2, 3, 4, 5 S A. Express thoughts on topics that are of concern and interest to them within their school and community B. Participate in and interpret various forms of cultural expression such as: music, art, speech, writing, traditions, and other products of a culture. 1. Read orally and speak using proper intonation and clear enunciation. 2. Verbally communicate ideas, information, opinions, and feelings with socio-linguistic competence necessary to communicate appropriately according to audience, and purpose: personal, social, academic, and beyond. 3. Exchange information with peers about self with importance given to everyday lives and memorable experiences. 4. Describe, compare, and classify objects and events. 1. Express orally what was learned by participating in a cultural event. 2. Utilize idioms (modismos) appropriately. 3. Explain and utilize Spanish proverbs (dichos). 4. CONTENT STANDARD 02: By listening, observing, reading and discussing, students will comprehend and interpret oral, written, and visual messages on a variety of topics. CAREER READINESS: 2, 3, 4, 5 A. Comprehend information on topics of concern and interest to them, their school, and their community. B. Recognize and interpret more complex forms of cultural expression 1. Demonstrate recognition and comprehension of words in context. 2. Obtain information from authentic resources that portray or are derived from real life experiences and original sources of the language/culture studied 3. Acquire new knowledge about people, events, and cultures. 4. Demonstrate comprehension by means of presentations in written, oral, and/or other artistic forms. a. Identify and compare the different forms of communication in the Spanish speaking cultures including signs, symbols, advertisements, displays, mural, songs, or rhymes. b. Read an authentic historical document, novel, or poem and summarize in oral/written language. c. After listening to a dialogue or short story, write a paragraph to demonstrate comprehension. d. Follow instructions for a multi-step task, such as a dance, an origami project, etc. e. Observe an event or dramatization, live or via a media form, and write or illustrate a report about it. f. Read a pen pal s letter in the language studied and report to class. Compare and contrast the information with information about the student s home, school, and community. 1. Understand and interpret other forms of authentic written Spanish such as informational and nonfiction material, personal letters, electronic mail, pamphlets, newspaper and magazine articles, advertisements, and standardized forms such as job applications. 2. Understand and interpret details of television, radio and live presentations. 3. Observe, describe, & discuss patterns of behavior, or artistic expression, & use of materials from culture studied. a. Compare art forms such as music and song in the various Spanish-speaking countries. b. Identify heroes, heroines, and myths of Hispanic culture. c. Study art by various Hispanic artists and describe and explain their importance in the Hispanic culture. d. Compare and contrast behavior typical of the student s peer group in the culture studied. 26

CONTENT STANDARD 03: Students will understand the relationship between language and culture. CAREER READINESS: 2, 3, 4, 5 A. Use appropriate language and gestures, which reflect cultural understanding and meaning. B. Demonstrate how language influences culture. 1. Observe, recognize, compare and contrast, and express appropriate verbal/non-verbal behaviors including body language, gestures, age-, class-, and gender appropriate behaviors for the language studied. 2. Express personal beliefs and opinions clearly and coherently both as an individual and within a debate format. a. Write a Dear Abby letter describing a misunderstanding resulting from culturally inappropriate behavior. b. Debate the pros and cons of various age appropriate topics. c. Describe yourself in Spanish. d. Describe your perfect mate using culturally appropriate language. 1. Use appropriate language reflecting culture, including register, formal/informal address, and distinctions of gender, age, and human/nonhuman status. 2. Observe, identify and discuss patterns of behavior or interactions typical of the peoples of the different Spanish speaking countries. 3. Show cultural awareness and sensitivity by using appropriate behavior in all situations. a. Create cartoon strips to illustrate slang expressions. b. Compare words used by different Hispanic cultures to indicate the same thing. c. Write a poem using words that distinguish between humans and animals. d. Research and discuss taboos of language and/or gestures of Spanish and Hispanic culture. e. Use appropriate language when addressing teachers, guests, and peers in the classroom. f. CONTENT STANDARD 04: Students will develop an understanding of other cultures, including such elements as: their value systems, languages, traditions, and individual perspectives. CAREER READINESS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 A. Expand and apply knowledge of the elements of a cultural system. B. Expand and use knowledge of the cultural variations within a linguistic group 1. Exchange a variety of oral & written information and ideas on topics related to contemporary events and issues. 2. Deepen ones knowledge of the cultural values, traditions, achievements, and history of the Spanish speaking peoples using different forms of media/communication. a. Investigate and report on cultural traditions and celebrations, such as holidays, birthdays, quinceañera celebrations, season s festivals, religious ceremonies, and recreational gatherings customary in the various Spanish-speaking countries. b. Illustrate in the form of a mural, aspects of the students culture. c. Write an essay explaining and giving examples of What is Culture? d. In groups, list the stereotypical roles assigned to both Hispanics and Anglos by the other s culture. e. Research and report on the archaeology, history, and/or biology of a culture ( Who are/who were important people and why? ) f. Interview parents and/or grandparents and have them relate to you games or stories told to them when they were children. Compare them to those of other students. 1. Compare and contrast differences and similarities between speakers of the same language by researching and reporting on their history (ies), societal rules, and roles. 2. Study, analyze, compare and contrast variations in cultural practices among the Hispanic countries. 3. Produce written and illustrated materials aimed at a particular population as the audience. a. Using books, periodical articles, or videotapes, observe and report on differences and similarities of men and women in their daily lives in two countries or regions that share the same language. b. Record and compare differences and similarities in dialect, idioms, and other language-styles of storytellers from two countries or regions that share the same language. c. Write and produce a public service announcement for a particular population. d. Write & deliver a political campaign speech aimed at a particular population audience e. Design an advertising campaign that uses local dialect in the slogans. 28

Recognize and use the appropriate levels and styles of language in various contexts. C. Interpret and apply critical elements of the language systems studied to communicate meaning 1. Write in complete sentences, using correct sentence structure, capitalization and punctuation utilizing different sentence modes (imperative, interrogative, declarative, and exclamatory). 2. Develop, write, and edit using the Writing Process, multi-paragraph compositions including descriptive, narrative, persuasive, compare and contrast formats 3. Understand and apply the correct use of the various verb tenses: Present Indicative, Preterite, Imperfect, Future a. Develop dialogues, paragraphs, essays on various topics. b. Prepare a brief research paper in which content areas and ideas are analyzed from several sources to present a coherent argument or conclusion, including proper format and bibliography 1. Write dialogues for and perform characters in dramatizations showing different contexts/situations. 2. Recognize and use a variety of vocabulary, including figurative speech for a variety of purposes a. Write a friendly letter. b. Write a formal letter inquiring on a subject of interest to a consulate or embassy. c. Listen to, read, and write ballads in Spanish d. Observe soap opera video segments to analyze levels and styles of the language studied, such as greetings, in different situations, roles. etc. e. CONTENT STANDARD 06: Students will use the languages studied to reinforce and expand knowledge of other disciplines. I, IV CAREER READINESS: I, 2, 3, 5 Gr. 5-8 A. Access and use information from the languages studied in other content areas.. B. Compare experiences and new knowledge from other content areas to what is being learned in the languages studied. 1. Using information/media sources written in Spanish, access and present information about topics in other content areas. 2. Expand vocabulary through word sets or groups of related words. 3. Report on the role of contemporary and historical figures and events in the Spanish-speaking world 4. Demonstrate understanding of cognates / false cognates 5. Identify geographic elements of Hispanic countries. a. Read and discuss Spanish language magazines and newspapers. b. Create maps of the Spanish speaking countries with geographical features, such as boundaries, capital cities, prominent landforms, rivers, states, and regions. c. Participate in a group interdisciplinary project that incorporates the language studied, such as a problem-solving project on environment, architecture, etc. d. Compile and present an illustrated program about the influence of the language studied on culinary arts, visual arts, political science and government. (e.g. French: crème de la crème, chef, coup d etat, etc.) 1. Acquire information from a variety of other subjects and interpret it in the Spanish classroom, noting similarities and differences in information. 2. Apply concepts, vocabulary and information from other content areas to learning in Spanish. a. Interpret graphs, charts, and maps. b. Compare popular songs & dances from country/language studied with songs and dances of the United States. c. Use terms from the arts or sciences to explain and illustrate vocabulary and word roots in the language studied. d. Use concepts, vocabulary, information, and processes from technology and media production in the presentation of programs about the language studied. 30

Expand the understanding of languages and cultures through learning about the experiences, values, feelings, and decisions of others. B. Integrate languages and knowledge of cultures into their lives for personal enjoyment through recreation, creative expression, and social activities. C. Use languages and knowledge of cultures to explore career opportunities in diverse and changing economies. 1. Gain an awareness of Hispanic literary writers. 2. Share with others and community resources their knowledge, feelings, and skills in studying language and culture. a. Interview guest speakers. b. Read and report on travel literature. c. Research & report on locales to visit, including study of architecture, environment, social systems & practices. d. Participate in field trips to cultural events, museums, galleries, etc. 1. Use decoding skills and knowledge of vocabulary to read independently 2. Discuss information acquired through the use of media, entertainment, and technology. 3. Share in the sports, arts, and other social organizations and activities related to the language studied. a. Participate in games utilizing the languages/cultures studied. b. Research job markets, using information resources such as the Internet, newspapers in the language studied, CD-ROM databases, Biography Index, etc. b. Write to embassies and consulates concerning career opportunities. c. Attend and organize career fairs/college fairs including representatives of languages/cultures studied. 31
