SPEAR GRADUATE COACH Training Programme

Are you a confident individual with an interest in coaching and a passion to work as part of the local church to see young people reach their potential? Together with St Peter s Bethnal Green, we are now recruiting for the Spear Graduate Coach Training Programme, starting in January 2019 a paid, dynamic, one year opportunity to develop coaching and leadership skills whilst bringing about social transformation in the local community. Through excellent delivery of the Spear Programme in partnership with local churches, you will equip and empower unemployed 16 24 year olds to overcome disadvantage and turn their lives around by moving into sustainable work or further education. Becoming an active member of St Peter s, your role also involves providing support (including administrative support) to the Lead Coach and Centre Manager in the delivery of Spear as a powerful expression of the Christian life and faith.

What will you gain? Development of excellent coaching capability As a Graduate Coach you will be fully funded to attend the Coaching for Leadership course an ilm accredited 5-day programme of coaching training over 2 months. You will then continue to develop coaching skills by learning from the Lead Coach and Centre Manager to deliver the Spear programme to a high standard and through intensive on-the-job support, including weekly 1-1 mentoring sessions. Development of management skills We are passionate about not just developing those we engage with externally but developing our staff. We actively recruit internally so all Graduate coaches who grow in the relevant skills are given opportunities and support to progress both within our Spear Centres nationwide, and into other roles within Resurgo, including head office roles, corporate coaching and other projects. Gaining transferrable management skills, our Graduate coaches progress first into the role of Lead Coach. Within 3 years, we aim for you to gain the skills and confidence to oversee and manage a Spear Centre, with responsibility for the staff team, young people and Centre outcomes.

What will you gain? Development of Christian Leadership As part of our holistic coaching approach, we are dedicated to helping people progress both professionally and personally, and not only model but teach and develop Christian leadership through vulnerability, honesty, and growing the whole person. You will also have opportunities to practice leadership in a Christian context through leading Resurgo s regular staff prayer and worship meetings and involvement in team meetings and events at St Peter s, the partner church. Development of Social Impact Awareness As part of the role, you will gain a working understanding of the issues affecting the community in which your church is based. We will encourage and work with you to grapple with the question of how the church can best serve its community, and you will work with the partner church and community to tailor the delivery of Spear and implement strategies in a form which is relevant and effective; your aim will be to bring lasting social transformation as an expression of the Christian faith.

Our coaches say What will you do? What is Spear Foundation? You ll support the Lead Coach and Centre Manager with the delivery of Spear Foundation, a 6 week programme which we run 6 times a year at each Centre. It s aimed at supporting disadvantaged young people in returning to work or education, and equipping them with the skills to stay there. You will prepare and coach the Spear Foundation group as well as 1-1 sessions, and be an integral part of supporting the daily administrative function of the programme. After graduating university in 2017, I began to understand the importance of having a job which not only has a positive impact on those around me, but one which will also provide me with a sense of purpose. Working at Spear has allowed me to achieve this as on a daily basis I am able to see the incredible difference coaching can have in the lives of young people What happens after Spear Foundation? You ll assist the Lead Coach and Centre Manager with the delivery of weekly Spear Career sessions as part of the ongoing support offered to Spear trainees. You ll partner with the church to engage trainees in groups that form part of the wider church programme, including Torch, a youth group specifically aimed at providing a safe pace for Spear completers to find community and explore life s big questions. Tim: joined our Camden Spear team in March 2018

What will you do? Outreach and Building Community Relationships, including Trainee Recruitment You ll spend time developing relationships with local organisations to encourage referrals onto the Spear programme. This involves communicating in person and by phone/email, using coaching skills to engage both professionals and young people. Co-ordination of Spear Celebration Events You ll arrange our inspiring Spear Celebration events, where we invite the community, church congregation, family and friends to celebrate the success of young people who complete the Spear programme. You ll have the opportunity to work with the other coaches to assign staff roles, organise volunteers, and make sure all equipment and resources are in place to make these fun and inspiring events. Active participation in Resurgo and partner church team You ll also become an active member of the partner church by engaging with Sunday services and building relationships within the community. You ll contribute to and lead regular prayer meetings, demonstrating spiritual leadership in line with Resurgo s Christian ethos and the mission of the partner church. You ll also work alongside the Spear Chaplain to support the missional aspect of the work of the church.

Church Community The majority of our Spear Graduate Coaches are directly employed by the partner church at which their Centre is based in this case St Peter s Bethnal Green. This means you get to be part of a vibrant church staff team and submerged in an exciting faith community, whilst remaining robustly supported by the Resurgo coaching team and expertise. Part of your role is to build a strong and committed network of supporters within the church in order to help source employment, funding and volunteer opportunities for the charity alongside developing the engagement and backing of the church members. This will involve establishing a personal presence within the community as your regular place of worship, and may entail speaking at church on Sundays, at meetings and events and also providing information for church communications. Because of the key role you ll have at St Peter s, you will have an interview with the church team as part of the interview process, to ensure a good fit for you and the church both in terms of character and church background/beliefs.

What kind of person are we looking for? Our coaches say Heart for working with young people and commitment to transforming urban communities Ability to personally represent the Christian values of Resurgo & the partner church Desire to grow and learn spiritually and as a leader, including a desire to learn and understand coaching and training techniques Effective interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence Sense of humour and fun! Excellent communication skills and telephone manner Self-motivated with the ability to exercise initiative Qualifications at A-level or equivalent are essential; qualifications at degree level or equivalent are desirable Excellent administration and organisational skills with an eye for detail Good time management skills with ability to prioritise workload Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines Accurate and efficient in typing and work methods, with IT competence I wanted to work somewhere which made a tangible impact in young people s lives, as well as somewhere I d keep learning. I love that Spear (Resurgo) has an unrelenting belief in other people s potential, and that everything we do originates from that Helen: joined the Harrow Spear Centre in September 2015

Working Requirements We offer a 12 month fixed term contract, and because we look to progress all coaches within Resurgo, you have great chances of being offered a permanent role with us after the scheme.
