Belgrave South Primary School Newsletter FORTNIGHTLY NEWSLETTER FRIDAY 2 ND MARCH IMPORTANT DATES From the Principal by Stuart Boyle Dear Parents and Carers, Junior School Council The assembly held in my absence on Monday was a very special assembly as our Junior School Council members were presented with their badges. I am sorry that I did not get to see the excitement and pride shown by our councillors as they accepted their badges from Mrs Ould and the School Captains. Our Junior School Council provides our students with a voice in making decisions about how our school operates and gives them the opportunity to lead projects that will benefit all the students that they represent and school community as a whole. There are many leaders in our local community for them to look towards, leaders who set a wonderful example of what leadership is and exemplify what it means to contribute to a community. Good leaders take the time to listen to others, learn about the community that they will serve and actively look for opportunities to contribute to improving the community that they lead. I look forward to our students achieving amazing things throughout the year. Prep Certificates and Welcome Barbeque It was also a special assembly for our Foundation students and families as Mrs Bok and Mrs Dwyer presented our new students with certificates to recognise their outstanding start to school. I am very proud of them for the enthusiasm they have shown in starting their learning journey and for the incredible energy that they bring to our Junior School Centre. We held our Welcome to Foundation barbeque last Friday evening. It was wonderful to spend time with our new families, sharing food and conversation while watching the children play. It was also great to see new connections being made between families, putting names to the faces of their children s new friends. It was a great night and I thank all of our Foundation families for coming along and the Belgrave South Team for hosting a fantastic evening. Instrumental Music Program Re-establishing a strong focus on music and performing arts across the school is a major focus for 2018. As part of this priority, much work has gone into expanding our instrumental music program. Our instrumental music teachers provide expert tuition for students across the instrument families; percussion, woodwind, brass and strings. We are also incredibly excited to have added voice and vocal coaching to our program this year. Our school choir has already formed and are working with Katarina Mizzi as part of our lunchtime activities program and several bands are in the early stages of formation. With the addition of extra instruments and extracurricular programs, we now have a large number of students actively participating in music and performing arts. CFA Gather at the Gate With many new families joining our school over the previous twelve months, we have arranged for a CFA representative to be in our Junior School Courtyard between 3pm and 4pm on Thursday, 8 March to offer one of their new programs titled Gather at the Gate. The program provides our school community with the opportunity to discuss fire safety, planning and preparation with CFA educators. Despite the days cooling and the autumn leaves starting to turn, it is vital that we improve our knowledge and understanding of local conditions and bushfire safety considerations. District Swimmers I would like to congratulate all of the students who competed in the Sherbrooke District Swimming Carnival. Twenty seven students attended and competed at the event and gave their individual events their best efforts. Many events were won by our students across the board with our relay teams again being strong performers on the day. Belgrave South were named District Champions for 2018, bringing back the district pennant to proudly hang in our foyer. Twenty two students will now advance to the Dandenong Ranges Division Carnival on Wednesday, 7 March to be held at Aquanation in Ringwood. I wish them the best of luck and look forward to hearing about their experience as they advance to the next level of competition. I would like to thank the many parents and friends that transported students to and from the venue and who provided great encouragement for our students throughout the day. Thank you to Jenny James and Julie Price for their care and support of our students throughout the day. Much work goes into making these events possible for our students so I would like to thank Chris Anderson for his organisation of the event.
NEWSLETTER Issue #2 3 School Council Following the closing date for nominations for school council as published in our school newsletter we have received fewer nominations than vacancies in the Parent Membership category. I therefore declare elected the parents that nominated for this category, Melissa Jewell and Jonathon Lloyd, and I call for further nominations for the remaining two parent vacancies. As communicated via Flexi-buzz, nominations forms for the remaining vacancies can be collected from the main office and should be returned to the Principal no later than 4pm Friday, 2 March. Should the number of nominations received exceed the remaining number of vacancies, a ballot may be required. Two nominations were received for the two vacancies in the DET Employee category. I declare elected Meagan Street and Lynn Bok. I am looking forward to working with a wonderfully supportive and proactive school council again this year. School Photographs Arthur Reed Photography have been booked in to take our school photographs on Tuesday, 20 March. Photo flyers and information about ordering was sent home today, please contact the office if you need any further assistance. Please note that all class photos, individual and family portraits will be taken on this day. 2018 Junior School Council Leaders
