SCHOOL COUNCIL SURVEY Thank you to all parents/guardians who completed the survey about the operation of our School Council. Using the feedback from the school community and staff, presented at our last meeting, members are now looking at ways to improve the way the Council operates. The following extract from Terms of Reference Unincorporated Council outlines the important role our School Council has in enhancing the education of students at Lesmurdie Primary School. What is a School Council? The School Council is formed with the fundamental purpose of enabling parents and members of the community to engage in activities that are in the best interests of students and will enhance the education provided by the school. The roles and responsibilities of a School Council are clearly defined in the School Education Act (1999) and School Education Regulations (2000).
The School Council has the following functions: To take part in: establishing and reviewing from time to time, the school s objectives, priorities and general policy directions. the planning of financial arrangements necessary to fund those objectives, priorities and directions. evaluating the school s performance in achieving them. formulating codes of conduct for students at the school. With the approval of the Director General to: take part in the selection of, but not the appointment of, the school principal or any other member of the teaching staff. To approve: of a charge or contribution determined by the principal for the provision of certain materials, services and facilities. of the costs determined by the principal to be paid for participation in an extra cost optional component of the school s educational program. of the items determined by the principal to be supplied by a student for the student s personal use in the school s educational program. of an agreement or arrangement for advertising or sponsorship in relation to a government school. To determine in consultation with students, their parents and staff a dress code for students when they are attending or representing the school. To promote the school in the community. Membership of the Council will be drawn from the following categories: parents of students at the school members of the general community staff of the school the principal is automatically a member of the Council. ENTERING SCHOOL GROUNDS OUT OF HOURS With shorter daylight hours as winter approaches fast, our gardener and cleaning staff are working when it is dark outside. Staff have mentioned to me that on occasions they have been quite frightened when they turn around and are faced with a stranger. For security reasons, people are discouraged from entering the school grounds out of school hours unless an arrangement has been made through the Principal. However, I appreciate that sometimes children forget to take their belongings home and parents rush into school to pick them up, especially wet clothing during swimming lessons. Can I please ask that on the rare occasion you may need to return later to school, you find the cleaner and identify yourself, giving the reason for being on school grounds. Thank you for your understanding. OUT OF SCHOOL CARE FAMILIES To ensure the smooth collection of children by out of school providers, can I please request parents/guardians inform Pachamama or KOSC if their child is not to be picked up from Lesmurdie Primary School at the end of the school day. I appreciate that with our busy lives it is easy to forget to give them a call. Such occasions may include when your child has gone home ill, a play over, sporting commitments, extended holiday etc. Staff supervise students after school outside Room 4 until the care providers arrive. However, sometimes there is confusion when care providers are expecting to collect a child and they are not waiting in the pickup area. The additional time required investigating why the child is not present has a flow on effect to the pickup times at subsequent schools. Kevin Donetta Principal

All students are encouraged to wear their faction t-shirts on the day. I have provided approximate starting times for each of the races. All parents are very welcome to attend and support the runners. This year, championship medals are awarded to students from Years 2-6. The times are as follows: Kindergarten Girls 8.55am Boys 9.05am Pre-primary Girls 9.15am Boys 9.25am Year 1 Girls 9.35am Boys 9.45am Year 2 Girls 9.55am Boys 10.05am Year 3 Girls 10.15am Kind regards, Nicole Borbas Boys 10.25am Year 4 Girls 10.35am Boys 10.45am RECESS Year 5 Girls 11.20am Boys 11.30am Year 6 Girls 11.45am Boys 11.55am HBF RUN FOR A REASON On Sunday May 22, some of the staff from Lesmurdie PS competed in the HBF Run for a Reason as a LPS team. Even though they didn't enter the 21.1 km half marathon, there was still sweat (or possibly raindrops) and tears (of joy!) as they walked the 4 km for such a good cause. We hope next year to have more staff competing, and for the potential of entering the 12 km category! A fantastic job done by all who competed! Katy Symons

JUNIOR GARDEN REQUEST The Shire of Kalamunda has their plants for residents program running over the next two weekends. The Junior Block FFD plant stall would benefit greatly if the plants you did not want to use/ or don t have room for were donated to the FFD plant stall. Even if you were not planning on collecting your allocated 15 plants, we would greatly appreciate if you could spare a few minutes to collect them and pass them onto us. The classes in the junior block will then lovingly re-pot and look after them. You will need photo ID and your rates notice as proof that you live in the Shire and then collect them as usual (see link) and then bring them along to school and drop them into the Junior block next week. http://www.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/your-neighbourhood/sustainable-living/plants-for-residents SAVE THE DATE FOR THE 2016 SCITECH NIGHT Once a year LPS takes over Scitech for the evening. This year Scitech night will be held on Friday 17th June. Feel free to invite friends and family from outside of the school for a fun night. We will be doing pizzas as usual. Flyers and order forms will be coming home soon!! HAUNTED HOUSE FOR FFD 2016? There is a ghostly risk that the Haunted House at the 2016 Family Fun Day will disappear... It is not going to be a class stall and so I am making a request for all those with an inkling toward the scary... to step forward! History has told us that this activity needs 2 or three key ghouls (drivers)... who can scare other helpers at particular critical points over the next few months. If you would like to be one of those key (ghouls) drivers, please email me directly: nicolajreilly@gmail.com There have been some parents who have volunteered their help a couple of days before hand and after to set up and clearing, so you will not be alone in the graveyard! The 2014 Haunted House is well documented on various tombstones and so there is a solid starting point to use. The design and layout is there (but clearly can be modified if desired) as are many of the costumes etc. Please email me if you would like to take responsibility of the fabulous 'bloody' activity at this year's FFD.
