Catch the.. December 2018 Leeder S.P.I.R.I.T. OUR MISSION STATEMENT: We will prepare all students to meet the challenges of a changing society by facilitating and fostering their intellectual, physical, emotional and social development in a safe and inclusive learning environment It is inspiring to witness the ongoing efforts from all the staff at DLMS to create a thriving and supportive learning community in our building. From professional dialogues and engaging curricular activities to our numerous club and team offerings, we are proud of the wonderful work being accomplished at David Leeder M.S. Throughout this term, our professional dialogues have focused on creating our school s Theories of Action. As a staff we continually analyze any available data (report card marks; EQAO scores; board, school and classroom based surveys) to determine areas to be addressed in terms of student growth and challenges. As a follow up, committees engage in establishing a Theory of Action (see below) within their respective area of focus. As a staff, we feel that this collective work prepare us to inspire confidence, success and hope in each student. THEORY OF ACTION (2018-2019) CLIMATE NUMERACY LITERACY If students and staff at DLMS engage in in-class lessons and processes that promote mindfulness and well-being, and speak openly about best practices surrounding self-regulation, then we will have the tools to build positive relationships with others and better manage stressors in the classroom and workplace. If teachers at DLMS use curriculum spiraling as the basis for curriculum mapping and focus on the fundamentals of math, students will make more timely connections that will better support student skill acquisition and automaticity of basic facts. If teachers work to develop student understanding of the multiple purposes for reading (for enjoyment, information, research, instruction), then students will be better able to understand how to evaluate, utilize and respond to a variety of text forms and will be better able to choose appropriate strategies when reading. LEADERSHIP COMMUNITY OUTREACH If we engage staff in an exploration of equity through a lens of selfregulation and emotional literacy, staff will be better equipped to engage in culturally responsive practices. If we develop a more comprehensive plan for meaningful parental involvement and communication we will support richer school-home partnerships, reduce barriers to engagement and see greater attendance at school events throughout the school year.

Winter Bus Safety The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months. Allow extra time to get to your bus stop. Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening. Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice. Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces. Dress properly winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm. Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus. Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street. Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt. On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions: When possible, wait with your child for the bus. Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult. Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger is. Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Are you an instrumental music student at DMLS? If you take instrumental music class at DMLS, you are expected to practice your instrument daily as part of your homework routine. Make sure to take your instrument home every day and don t forget to bring it back to school for your class. This month DMLS will be participating in mindful activities on Mondays and Wednesdays. Some of the activities will be mindful coloring, breathing exercises, group fitness, yoga classes, and much more.
