Both Biology &160 and Chemistry 100 are prerequisites for this course. It includes the study of bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, viruses and prions and their vital roles on this living planet. We will also study their involvement in several infectious diseases. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1) Understand basic principles of microbiology including cell structure, biochemical pathways, genetics, replication and evolution of cells 2) Understand the role of microbes in the environment and in causing diseases 3) Master basic microbial laboratory procedures 4) Develop the ability to collect, record and analyze data 5) Develop ability to read, interpret and critique articles about microbiology and to communicate that information to an audience 6) Increase your ability to work constructively with others 7) Expand your awareness and appreciation of the invisible organisms all around us

Strategies for Success in this Class: Attend all lecture periods and laboratories. Take notes, review (re-write) them and use them as a study guide. Stay current with the class (readings, notes, laboratory exercises, etc.). Focus on understanding the Big Picture and then add in the details Study by yourself and also with fellow students.. ASK QUESTIONS, ask questions, ask questions... of yourself when you are studying, your fellow students, and myself. I am happy to answer questions during lectures, labs, office hours or by e-mail. INSTRUCTOR RESPONSIBILITIES To facilitate learning of course objectives. To provide a comfortable classroom environment in which student success is attainable. To facilitate constructive and appropriate group and class discussion of topics. To make supplemental material available for students through Canvas. To be available to answer questions by appointment and via e-mail at least once a day during the week. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES To be on time to lecture and lab. If absence is unavoidable, it is your responsibility to notify the instructor and obtain notes from fellow students. To keep track of due dates as presented in the syllabus or by instructor. To keep up with readings and turn in assignments on time. To study outside of class hours. Do not be afraid to ask questions. If you have a question, you are probably not alone. If you are having trouble understanding the material or doing well on quizzes or exams, it is your responsibility to seek help from me outside of class. To provide a comfortable learning environment for your fellow students. You must treat me and your fellow classmates with respect. GENERAL INFORMATION Exams: Exams will be a combination of multiple choice, true/false, matching, essay and critical thinking questions. You will be assessed on recall of terminology, processes, and structures and asked to explain details of how and why things work. Each exam will focus on the material covered in lecture prior to the exam itself. The final exam is not cumulative. LABORATORY: In a microbiology class, laboratory is a very important component of the class. During each laboratory period you will take notes, make drawings of your observations and answer questions about that exercise. BEFORE coming to lab you should read and understand the

theory, application and in this exercise portion of each laboratory exercise as well as the appropriate section in your textbook. You should also scan the materials and procedures portion so that you are well prepared to do the exercise. During the last half of the quarter, you will be given a culture with a microorganism that you will need to isolate and identify. You will be graded on your success in this task and on your laboratory notebook and flow chart (60 pts.) You will be given more information about this project later. Laboratory Quizzes and Projects There will be laboratory quizzes at the beginning of each lab period to ensure that you have read and prepared for the days lab. There will also be projects related to lab that will be announced later. Laboratory Safety: For safety reasons, children, food, and drink are not permitted in the laboratory and children are not allowed to attend lecture. Copied assignments and plagiarism: It is my firm belief that unless you can express something in your own words, you do not truly understand it. As all assignments are designed to build and assess your understanding, all assignments must be written in your own words. Wording that is copied from the text, the lab manual, Bergey s Manual, internet sources or other students will receive no credit. Copying on exams will result in a zero grade for the exam and disciplinary action according to the Student Handbook. Tape recording: You are welcome to tape my lectures for the sole purpose of assisting yourself with learning the material. Cell phones: All cell phones should be turned off during class and during laboratory. If you must text do so discreetly and quickly only in emergencies and/or step into the hallway to do so. Course withdrawal: If you decide to drop this course for any reason, you must officially withdraw with the registration office or you will receive a failing grade in the course. I do not offer any of the exception grades like instructor withdrawal or audit.
