Dear Argyle Sixth Graders and families, ARGYLE MAGNET MIDDLE SCHOOL 2016-2017 SIXTH GRADE OUTDOOR EDUCATION We are excited that Outdoor Education for our sixth graders is coming in November! This is a great opportunity for our students to get outdoors and really experience education in a different way. Because of the importance and uniqueness of Outdoor Ed., it is our expectation that every sixth grader will participate. If there is a reason your child cannot join his/her classmates for this event, please let us know so we can make the proper arrangements. Outdoor Education takes place at The Smith Center which is a Montgomery County Public Schools facility located in Rockville. Located in Rock Creek Park, it is surrounded by 450 acres of undeveloped land. In addition to heated cabins, it includes a variety of other buildings and outdoor activity areas all dedicated to environmental education. For more information, you can visit its website at: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/outdoored/ Students will attend at one of the following three sessions: Session 1 Session 2 Session 3 Mon. Nov 14- Wed. Nov 16 Wed. Nov 16- Fri. Nov 18 Mon. Nov 21- Wed. Nov 23 Each sixth grader will attend one of three sessions. Sessions are three days long (Monday through Wednesday and Wednesday through Friday). During the other two sessions, students will attend school as usual. Students will be assigned sessions by science classes. On the day of departure the students are to arrive at school at 8:30 prepared with all necessary supplies. Students CANNOT take the bus to school on the day they depart for Outdoor Education. Furthermore, they MUST be picked up on Wednesday or Friday afternoon promptly at 1:00pm. Students CANNOT take the bus home at 2:40pm. During the day, students will participate in four different learning activities: Predator Prey Food Web The simulation supports the ecosystems unit in the sixth grade science curriculum and provides students with an engaging and thought-provoking glimpse into how food chains work and function and it s really fun! Watershed The workshop will focus on techniques for conducting a macroinvertebrate survey, chemical analysis, and stream buffer analysis of a local stream. The students will use traditional materials and techniques to conduct the above studies. Confidence course One of the most memorable parts of Outdoor Ed is a physical obstacle course which encourages the students to develop trust in their classmates while also challenging students in new ways. GPS Activities These outdoor education activities will focus on using map reading and Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) skills so that students learn to locate various habitats in which they could sustain a settlement. In the evenings, your child s experience will continue with a variety of activities, including, but not limited to: ZUMBA: The students will dance and exercise this evening with a short motivational presentation about life skills. Night Hike: The students join together to experience the night life at the Smith Center. They will be able to stargaze and find nocturnal animals. Campfire: Students will enjoy a campfire and will roast marshmallows to make s mores. Planetarium: The Smith Center has a terrific planetarium program.
