Final Project 2 It is recommended that you to obtain a mark of 60% or more in this Final Project before doing the final exam for this course. Instructions Fill out the section titled identification. Write all your answers in the booklet. Do not forget to proofread all your answers. Submit this evaluation situation to your teacher if you are following the course at an adult education centre or send it to your tutor if you are following a distance course. We recommend that you keep a photocopy of your work, just to be safe. When you receive your corrected copy, read your teacher s or tutor s comments carefully. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask for feedback. 3

ANG-4101-2 Dare to Compare Final Project 2: Lease, Buy or Rent? Your teacher or tutor will evaluate this final production for Chapter 2. Make sure you do the work completely and seriously. There are three parts to this final production: a preparation, a written part and an oral part. The tables used to evaluate the written and oral parts are given to you below. You can use a dictionary, your Reference Booklet, and any other notes you have. Ready? Here s the situation: Public transportation is great but having your own vehicle can mean even more autonomy. It can, however, mean less money in your wallet each month. That s why the decision to purchase or lease a vehicle is an important one. Now, here is your mission for this final project. Your friend Scott has just finished his vocational diploma and has landed a great job in a downtown office. He started a few weeks ago and has been using public transportation. He likes it. It s convenient and cheap... but now his boss has given him extra duties that will make him travel outside the city. Taking the bus is no longer an option. He has asked for your opinion on the options available to him: buy a new car, lease a new car or use DriveShare, a rental car service with a monthly fee. Part 1: Preparing A. Go to <cours1.sofad.qc.ca/ressources> and access your course resource web page, or use your Centre s procedure. Listen to the message Scott left on your voice mail. As you listen, note down the important elements your friend is looking for in the space below. These elements will be important later on for comparing the different options. To convince and persuade your friend, you will need to find the options that meet most, if not all of his needs! 4

Final Project 2 B. You shop around many websites and end up choosing the brand new Magnum TX. It is a brand new car that is not too expensive and, from what you have read, very reliable. Read the online quote you were able to get. As you read, note down the information that is important in the section below. MAGNUM TX VEHICLE DETAILS PROVINCE: QC CAR MODEL: MAGNUM TX, 5 DOORS TRANSMISSION: MANUAL EXTERIOR COLOUR: GREY INTERIOR COLOUR: BLACK CASH PURCHASE $12,995.00 FINANCING 60 months 3.49% Interest rate Annual KM: N/A $271.74/month LEASING 60 months 6.99% Interest rate Annual KM: 20,000 km a year $217.53/month 5

ANG-4101-2 Dare to Compare C. Your friend Scott also talked about a rental car option. You looked online and found this offer from DriveShare. As you take a look at their offer, write down the important information you will need in the space below. DRIVESHARE Full Plan option! Designed for someone who needs a car a few times a week and even sometimes has to drive long distances! Per Hour $9.25 Weekday 24HR $70.00 Weekend 24HR $75.00 0-250km FREE 250km++ 25 /km Monthly Fee $25.00 Gas and insurance are included in all prices. D. Go to <cours1.sofad.qc.ca/ressources> and access your course resource web page, or use your Centre s procedure. Advertisements often tell us all the great things a service can do for us. But how can someone find out what to be careful about? Let s listen to this radio interview with someone who has actually tried a car sharing service. As you listen, note down what to watch out for and be careful with when using a car sharing service. You should also note down the advantages of the service to complete your notes. 6

Final Project 2 E. Now that you have read all the texts and taken notes, make up a list of the different elements you want to compare. Using your notes, complete the comparison table below. F. Before getting back to your friend, go over your completed comparison table. Which option seems the best deal to you? The option I choose to recommend is: The option I would not recommend is: Now, list the reasons why you have decided that this option is the best for your friend Scott in the space below: 7

ANG-4101-2 Dare to Compare Are there some possible disadvantages or potential consequences to consider? List them below: Part 2: Making Connections... Your work is worth 40% of your final mark: Questions 1 and 2 check your understanding and Question 3 checks your capacity to reinvest your understanding and generalize beyond the texts. Your teacher or tutor will use this table: Evaluation Table for C2: Reinvests Understanding of Texts Criteria Excellent 10 Very Good 8 Good 6 Weak 4 Very Weak 2 Understands and interprets information and findings Draws conclusions Organizes information Selects and uses pertinent information (e.g. appearance, condition, purpose) Establishes links between facts and consequences Makes suggestions and justifies decisions using information from texts Identifies the context, purpose and target audience in texts Recognizes texts components Adapts communication to context Total: / 40 Question 1 Answer the questions using complete sentences. 8

Final Project 2 A. Why does Scott suddenly need a car? B. How much will the Magnum TX end up costing at the end of the 60-month financing option? C. How much will the Magnum TX end up costing at the end of the 60-month leasing option? D. Who does the DriveShare option say their service is aimed at? E. Why did the radio host invite Geneviève Dubois? 9

ANG-4101-2 Dare to Compare Question 2 Answer the questions using complete sentences. A. Which option would you personally choose for yourself? Justify your answer. B. Can you think of at least one other advantage to both options? C. Can you think of at least one other disadvantage to both options? 10

Final Project 2 Question 3 Prepare some notes to get back to your friend Scott and give him your opinion on the options available. Recommend the option that you believe is the best for him and explain your reasons in note form. Make sure to include: Why it respects his requests. Details that explain your choice. Warnings about possible consequences of some of the choices. 11

ANG-4101-2 Dare to Compare Use the graphic organizer below and note form. Options Recommendations Now, let s go on to the conversation part. Part 3: Talking About... Using the information you gathered, simulate a conversation with your friend Scott about the results of the comparative study. Use your chart and your notes to explain which one you believe is the best choice and justify your choice. You will role-play this conversation with your teacher or tutor. Your work is worth 60% of the final mark. 12
