LAL TORBAY LAL was established in Torbay in 1980 and became a recognised Cambridge CELTA Teacher Training Centre in 1997. In the UK, LAL operates Adult language courses and residential Young Learner Summer Schools and also has a school in Twickenham, London. LAL delivers courses to non-native English speakers worldwide through a network of wholly owned schools, partner schools and other institutions. The course leads to the most widely-recognised Diploma in English Language Teaching. The DELTA course is split into three modules: Module 1: a two paper exam Module 2: written assignments and assessed teaching Module 3: An extended written assignment in an ELT area of the candidate s choice. How will I be assessed? Assessment is continuous, based on six hours of teaching practice and four written assignments. You need to pass both elements to be awarded the CELTA Certificate. There is no final exam. What does a CELTA course involve? The CELTA course covers the principles of effective teaching and provides you with a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners and hands-on teaching practice. Entry Requirements Minimum age 18 A minimum level of education to that required for entry into higher education (e.g. 2 A levels) If English is not your first language, you need to have a minimum language level equivalent to C2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (e.g. IELTS 8, CPE C or CAE A) The course will help you to develop: Knowledge of the English language grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation Awareness of the learners their needs and motivation Practical ability in developing the skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing Familiarity with materials Classroom management and lesson planning skills Techniques and procedures in presentation and practice of new language The timetable includes: 50 hours of input sessions on all basic aspects of planning and teaching 6 hours of teaching practice for each trainee with students of different nationalities and at two different language levels Daily detailed feedback and discussion sessions with tutors where you will receive plenty of help with planning 6 hours of observation of qualified and experienced teachers Individual tutorials to ensure you are getting the most from the course Application Process Before being accepted on the course you will be interviewed by one of our Teacher Trainers. DELTA Continue to develop your English teaching skills. The DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) course is a training course for experienced teachers. The modular DELTA is designed to be flexible to suit the varying needs of teachers; it consists of three modules which can be taken in any order and at any time and are separately certificated. LAL Torbay runs a semi-intensive course for Module 2. The course consists of: a 6-week intensive block in January/ February, with some external assessment possible in March. We also run an online Module 1 Exam course and will take Module 3 candidates on application. Why take a DELTA course? The DELTA course will help you to deepen your understanding of the principles and practice of teaching the English Language to adults and enable you to examine your current practices and beliefs. You will then be able to apply the results of your learning to your current teaching position and be eligible for more senior roles. Who can take a DELTA course? What does the DELTA course involve? The DELTA consists of 3 modules. The modules can be taken at any time and in any order, but our course has been designed to allow you to take all three modules together. Module 1: Online exam course Extending your background knowledge and understanding of: Language systems and skills Learners and their linguistic problems Teaching approaches and methodologies ELT resources and reference materials Different methods of assessment The course consists of practice tasks for each paper, targeted recommended reading, about 100 hours, and tasks to be submitted for each unit. There are interactive practice tasks throughout the units. Feedback and support is provided and there is an online forum. The timed and submitted mock exam (with feedback) ensures candidates are prepared for the Module One Exam (Papers 1 and 2), which are usually taken in June. (Cambridge has a December exam date as well). Module 2 Developing professional practice by: Deepening and applying your understanding of language and skills Examining effects of different contexts on learning English Managing, supporting and maximising learning Focusing and reflecting on your own classroom practice Evaluating different approaches and resources The input sessions will be a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, group activities, workshops, and discussions. You will also need to set aside about 200 hours for reading, research and assignment writing. Assessment is by written assignments and teaching practice (five lessons) during January, February and March. Module 3 Extending practice and focusing on a specialist option. This will depend completely on which area of ELT you are interested in (e.g. Business English, teaching Young Learners, etc.) and can be taken at any time. It is assessed by means of an extended written assignment. Entry requirements Minimum age 21 You should have at least two years full time experience of teaching English to adults in the past five years ideally in different contexts and at different levels You should normally be a graduate and have an initial teaching qualification You must be a native speaker or have at least the equivalent of an IELTS 8 We may accept applicants if they do not strictly meet all of these requirements but can demonstrate that they would be likely to complete the course successfully.
