Welcome to Aranmore A school with spirit Aranmore Catholic College is a co-educational school for Years 7-12. We are located in Leederville, just off vibrant Oxford Street, a mere 3 kilometres from the Perth CBD. As soon as you walk onto our campus, you will quickly discern three special things about our school: we have a long and rich history, we have happy students and a high teacher to student ratio which allows us to get to know each and every child. What this all means for your child is they enjoy a first class education, underpinned by traditional values, in a safe, supportive environment. Aranmore s rich history dates back to 1903 when the Sisters of Mercy founded our school. There were several name changes over the ensuing century before we reverted to Aranmore in 1986 with the amalgamation of St Mary s Girls School and Christian Brothers College Leederville. From our inception, we have always welcomed new migrants to Australia. Today, we are proud to boast over 60 nationalities amongst our students. Not only does this reflect the diversity of the WA population, it encourages our students to look at issues from a global perspective. The diversity of our student population is even more remarkable when you consider we only have 700 students. Our relatively small student number allows us to understand each child s strengths and weaknesses. Because we are small, we can tailor our teaching programs to suit the individual needs of each child, ensuring your child is not only cared for but challenged it s called Student Centred Learning and it is the basis of our education model. Trust. A motto for life Great thought went into the creation of Aranmore s college crest. The blue of the A is symbolic of Mary, while the Celtic Cross in its centre represents the College s Irish origins. The Cross is supported by our motto, Trust. This incredibly powerful word is at the very centre of everything we believe in and is the basis for all successful relationships; from the spiritual one, between us and our God, to the day-to-day relationships between parents, students and teachers. When you send your child to Aranmore, we seek to repay that trust by equipping them with the moral strength and academic skills to make a positive contribution to society. The importance of student care Self esteem is so crucial to how we live our life, yet it can be so fragile. At Aranmore, our extensive Pastoral Care program is here to provide the emotional and spiritual support your child needs to navigate their teens and go on to become a valued member of the community. Each child is supported by a student care team comprising of their Form Teacher, Head of Year and Deputy Principal. Students can also receive additional care and guidance from our Careers Counsellor, School Counsellor, School Psychologist, Chaplain or Campus Minister. Of course we can t do it without your support. We believe in honest and open communication between the College and parents and welcome your enquiries. We encourage all parents, where possible, to become involved in College life. As we are a Catholic school, Religious Education is at the heart of our pastoral curriculum. We believe giving students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of our Faith, and the values it promotes, helps strengthen that precious self-esteem.

The merits of Middle School The ages from 12 to 14 are ones of huge physical and emotional change for your child and the transition from a primary to a secondary school environment can be dramatic and stressful. For this reason, Aranmore was one of the first Catholic Colleges in Perth to develop a Middle Schooling introduction to secondary school. In this supportive, nurturing environment, your child makes a smooth transition from Primary to Secondary education. Our tailored curriculum recognises that young adolescents have unique learning needs compared to lower primary and upper secondary students. Year 7 and 8 students are given the opportunity to discover their talents and interests by trying a variety of subjects taught by subject specialist teachers. Aranmore s Middle School teachers are committed to a Student Centred Learning model that takes into account the learning styles of each student. In practical terms this means when needed, we willingly adjust our teaching and assessment programs to suit your child. For example, if your child is dyslexic we may use oral, rather than a written examination. By doing so, we encourage students to become life-long learners and maximise their capacity for self-awareness and success. Senior School Year 10 marks the start of Senior School. This year is all about exposing students to their future options. They will be given the opportunity to explore a variety of courses so they are able to make informed decisions about what courses to study in Years 11 and 12. In Years 11 and 12, students choose five subjects to study that will determine their tertiary study options. During this stressful time we make sure our students are not only supported academically, but mentally. Our Careers Counsellor and Deputy Principal of Curriculum work closely with our senior students to help them choose courses that will maximise their future success and, just as importantly, happiness. This extra care and guidance results in our University entrance rates exceeding the State average. For a full list of subjects offered in Years 11 and 12, please visit our website at www.aranmore.wa.edu.au Of course not everyone s goal is University entry. Students planning to enter the workforce directly are given a taste of the real world through our ONSITE vocational training program. With Christ as our foundation, Aranmore Catholic College strives to create a learning environment for every child that fosters: Openness Quality of relating Growth in freedom and responsibility Excellence in personal growth and achievement Reflective and critical thinking

Special Programs Being a small school doesn t stop us from offering a range of specialist programs in languages, the arts and sports. This broad offering gives your child the ability to explore different areas and discover their passion. Language Program Aranmore is the only Catholic secondary school in Perth with a government accredited New Arrivals Learning Centre. The students in the centre are taught by highly trained specialists who assist students in developing the language skills, critical thinking skills and student skills, in order to prepare them for entry into Australian mainstream classes. Many of our staff have specialist qualifications in teaching English as a Second Language making Aranmore an excellent place for overseas students to study. Overseas students can benefit from extra support in English as a Second Language with specialist teachers, while completing courses similar to the rest of the students. A dedicated Overseas Student Coordinator monitors the welfare of Overseas Students and helps them with personal and academic problems. Aranmore students are able to study French beginning in Year 7 and continuing to Year 12. Students can also sit examinations at university entrance level in other languages as private candidates. ONSITE Aranmore was the first Catholic College to offer this innovative program that provides students with a successful transition course from school to the workplace. ONSITE students are able to follow a vocational course at school while gaining valuable accredited employment skills. They do this by completing

Music Program Our Music program covers theory and tuition in voice and in a variety of instruments taught by specialist staff. Ensemble groups include rock and jazz bands, choir and orchestra. Our talented music students are regularly invited to play at official community events. A number of scholarships are available in the Music Program. Cultural Life Aranmore has a proud tradition in the Performing Arts, especially in Music and Drama. Recent productions have included Grease, The Crucible and Alice s Adventures in Wonderland. Practical Arts In the Practical Arts area, students can take part in Materials, Design and Technology (Woodwork) as well as Art, Craft and Food Science and Technology (Cooking). Students regularly have works of Art chosen for display in various exhibitions, reflecting the high quality of work produced in the Art Department. Campus Ministry In Campus Ministry, our aim is to give students a range of opportunities to respond to the knowledge about God, Jesus and the Catholic Church that they have developed in Religious Education classes. Students are encouraged to put their faith into action by loving and serving others through our Christian Service Program. They are given opportunities to serve God and others by completing many acts of service that are organised at the College. Specialist Sports Programs Aranmore offers two unique, nationally recognised specialist sporting programs in Rugby and Netball. Teams compete successfully throughout the State and at a national level. There is a focus on the knowledge, skill and talent of both novice and experienced players. A limited number of scholarships are available to students who display ability in these sports and a commitment to their Academic Program.

Aranmore Catholic College We encourage students to strive for excellence in all areas of human achievement and believe in educating the whole person. For over 100 years, our aim has been the same: to provide an educational environment where students appreciate that learning is an enjoyable and worthwhile experience combined with individual success. We believe our happy and confident students, both past and present, are testimony to the education offered at Aranmore Catholic College.
