Lake-Sumter State College Course Syllabus Course Information: Course MGF 1107 Course Title: Explorations in Math CRN: 10257 Credit Hours:3 Semester: Fall 2017 Class Days, Location, Time M W 12:30-1:50pm, SM 236 Course Description: This is a survey course covering a section of at least six(6) topics from among the following: consumer mathematics, linear and exponential growth, numeration systems, history of mathematics, number theory, voting techniques, graph theory, mathematical systems, non-euclidean geometries, linear correlation and regression, and similar topics which demonstrate the beauty and utility of mathematics to the general population. Textbook & Other Course Materials: REQUIRED: The. E Textbook., MML My Math Lab are available in a bundle in the LSSC bookstore. All 3 are. required for this course.. Textbook A Survey of Mathematics with Applications, 10 th edition; Angel Abbott and Runde; Addison Wesley(the printed textbook is bundled with the access code at the bookstore for only a little more than what the bookstore charges for the MYMATHLab access code. Technology Requirements: Blackboard is a required component of this course. Students unfamiliar with Blackboard are expected to complete the Blackboard Orientation from LSSC s website within the first week of classes. BLACKBOARD: Blackboard is an online class management system where you will access course-related materials such as lectures, handouts and the MyMathLab portion of this course. This course requires a computer system which meets the minimum specifications for BLACKBOARD access. Please make certain your computer system meets the minimum requirements for BLACKBOARD. MYMATHLAB (MML): After logging into Blackboard and accessing this course, you will be prompted to register for the MyMathLab (MML) portion of this course to create a link to your coursework. You will need an access code as stated above (purchased online through the publisher s site or from the LSSC bookstore). Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the registration process. Once registered, you need only login to Blackboard to access your coursework. Since you are linking your MML component through your Blackboard course, you do NOT need a MML course ID. Use your Laker Mail email address when registering for the course. If you have not activated your Laker Mail account, go to the LSCC homepage and follow the instructions. All students are required to use Lakehawk Mail for official college email communication. If you are unfamiliar with Lakehawk Mail, follow the link on the college homepage for information. A calculator is recommended TI 30XS Student Learning Outcomes: The following outcomes will be assessed in this course. An outcome is defined as something students take with them beyond this course. After successful completion of this course, the student will: Demonstrate understanding of calculations in non-base ten numeric systems. Demonstrate competency in geometric modeling. Demonstrate the ability to apply consumer mathematics to real world problems. Course Objectives: Objectives are defined as what the course will do and/or what the students will do as part of the course. Provide students with exposure to topics which demonstrate the beauty and utility of mathematics to the general public.

Attendance/Withdrawal Policies: Institutional Information: Once the Add/Drop period passes, students deciding to discontinue class attendance and/or online participation have the responsibility for formal withdrawal by the withdrawal deadline. Withdrawal Deadline: Monday, October 30, 2017 by 4:30pm Instructor Policies: This is a college class. Everyone in the college environment, students and faculty are expected to act appropriately, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and courtesy. All answers must be in simplified form. For example, all fractions must be reduced. Other specifications will be made in class. If you are disruptive, then I will ask you to leave and you will be counted as absent. Turn off all cell phone ringers and other non-required electronic devices (i.e. laptop, ipod, mp3, blackberry, etc) before class. Students using unauthorized electronic
devices during class will be asked to leave and counted as absent. If you are late and I am giving a test, then you have only the remaining class time to complete the test, as do the students who were on time. If you are caught cheating, you will either fail the assignment/test/quiz or fail the course, at the discretion of the instructor. No warning will be given. Cell Phones Cell phones should be turned off and put away when you are in class. If you are seen texting or playing with your phone in class, you will be asked to leave the classroom for the remainder of the class period and you will have points deducted from your next TEST GRADE. The lowest quiz score will be dropped and your remaining quizzes will be averaged for your quiz grade. NO make-up homework will be allowed. A portion of your grade will be earned through the completion of online homework. This homework is assigned in MyMathLab and must be completed by the due date.
