MSc REAL ESTATE The School of the Built Environment at Oxford Brookes offers: Commercial/Residential Pathway International Pathway Hotel & Hospitality Pathway The MSc Real Estate is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Sponsored by leading international property consultancies: CBRE, Cluttons, Cushman & Wakefield, GVA, JLL, Knight Frank and Savills. 100% of our MSc Real Estate graduates go straight into employment.

Introduction The School of the Built Environment at Oxford Brookes University is an international centre of excellence for real estate education. The school has established itself as a premier provider of high calibre students to the property profession both in the UK and abroad. The MSc Real Estate at Oxford Brookes University meets the strong demand, from the property industry, for high calibre graduates in real estate. It is a practice-based programme, grounded in academic excellence, for students wishing to become chartered surveyors. The MSc Real Estate programme has three distinct pathways: Commercial/Residential International Hotel & Hospitality All three pathways are included within the one degree name the MSc Real Estate. UK students are encouraged to follow any of the pathways whereas international students are advised to follow either the International or Hotel & Hospitality pathway. The MSc Real Estate is available for full-time study only, with a September entry. Careers and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors We maintain strong partnerships with the professional bodies and our MSc Real Estate programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The MSc Real Estate is a non-cognate conversion programme that will prepare students for the challenges of entering professional practice and completing the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to become a chartered surveyor. The APC can be undertaken anywhere in the world. The MSc Real Estate is well recognised by the property industry, and our graduates have always enjoyed 100% graduate employment with international real estate consultancies, real estate management firms, banks, financial institutions, government bodies and corporates.

Involvement with Industry The MSc Real Estate is sponsored by some of the world s leading real estate consultancies, who provide support in the form of speakers, field trips and workshops. Sponsors include CBRE, Cluttons, Cushman & Wakefield, GVA, JLL, Knight Frank and Savills. These organisations, together with a committee of academics, alumni and other luminaries from the property profession, have been involved in developing the programme of study and present a series of lectures and workshops throughout the year. As a result, students come into regular contact with practitioners at the forefront of the profession, both in the UK and internationally. In addition to the active involvement with practitioners during the teaching programme, each MSc Real Estate student is paired with an alumnus who is working in the property profession under the structured MSc Buddies mentoring scheme. The philosophy of the degree is to provide you with a theoretical framework in the early modules of the programme and to build on this in the latter stages with practical, real life examples and case studies. The programme will provide all the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the real estate profession, in preparation for long-lasting and rewarding careers.

Teaching and Study Learning methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, project work, role play, field trips and independent study. Teaching is organised around the programme s component modules in two teaching semesters. Examinations are taken at the end of each teaching period. A final summer period is for completion of the applied project. The programme is intensive and requires students to undertake a substantial amount of private study plus individual and team project work. Our Alumni We have one of the largest and most influential alumni networks in the property sector, the Oxford Brookes Real Estate Management Society (OBREMS), which offers student internships, mentoring, prizes, and presents our graduates with highly beneficial networking opportunities. The MSc Real Estate comprises 13 compulsory taught modules and a structured applied project. Some modules are specific to the chosen pathway. Most modules are 10 credits each and the total MSc qualification is 180 credits. Each semester of work gives students 60 credits. The small cohort (about 45 students each year) means more individual attention, excellent group dynamics in lectures, good opportunities for socialising, sharing experiences, supporting each other and creating lasting friendships.

These help to establish an understanding of the mechanics of real estate markets as urban environments where people work and live. You will see development and investment opportunities, regeneration projects and large portfolios of property that need to be managed and maintained. Our colleagues from industry who accompany students on field trips will provide an insight into the work that they undertake in these markets.

MSc Real Estate Entry Requirements The programme is open to all applicants who hold a good (2.1 or above) undergraduate honours degree in a non-cognate discipline or equivalent international qualification. Applicants to this conversion programme are therefore welcome from any academic discipline apart from real estate. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to a career in real estate, preferably through previous work experience, which is strongly recommended. As the programme is normally oversubscribed, all UK based applicants will be invited for an open day interview before offers are made. Applicants based overseas will be invited to participate in a Skype/telephone interview. If your first language is not English, an IELTS score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in reading and writing and 5.5 in listening and speaking is required. Oxford is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. It is vibrant centre of history and culture. Studying Real Estate in Oxford at Brookes University offers you the opportunity to experience the tradition of learning in a modern, purpose built, environment.

MSc Real Estate Kate Wilkinson Student Profile Before you came to Brookes what did you study and where? I studied International Management and Modern Languages (French) at the University of Bath. What made you choose Brookes as a place to study? The location (I was already an Oxford resident) and the course s reputation for being one of the best in the country. What did you think of the course while studying here? Brilliant course! Very interactive and practical. An excellent overview of the Real Estate industry; it delivered good insight to the plethora of jobs that are available. There was a high degree of interaction with firms of varying size, through organised networking and field trips, which helped immensely with job applications and awareness. It must be said though it is not a course for the faint-hearted. It was a pretty intense year! What are the best bits of studying at Brookes? Brookes provides an excellent study environment with technology and information at your fingertips. The library is well-stocked and equipped with meeting rooms which really help with practising presentation skills for group projects. As master s students, we had access to a computer suite that afforded us a quiet area to work on projects and was not too far from our lecturers offices if any assistance was needed. After graduating from Brookes what were the next steps for your career and where are you working now? I applied to some of the positions being advertised and attended several interviews with different firms. The interview procedures were quite intense, but I was lucky to be selected for a position on the Savills Graduate Programme in Oxford. I am currently working towards my APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) which will qualify me as a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS). What so far have been the best moments? Getting my first job was the best feeling. It s really positive to know that everything you ve learnt through school, college and university can be put to good use somewhere. The property industry is a great industry to work in. There is such a broad range of specialisations with much crossover between them. People tend to be very friendly and sociable and there are always events and seminars to attend to expand your network of contacts and knowledge of the industry. One of the things I love most is the continued learning. The property market evolves constantly which provides fresh challenges and forces you to be up to date with what is happening in all areas of business. It s a fascinating and varied career and I am really looking forward to the prospective projects that I will be working on. What so far have been the most challenging moments? The sheer quantity and variety of information that needs to be acquired in order to get on with the job is quite intimidating at first. Working in the development field, I am required to have knowledge of planning, valuations, and agency to name but a few skills. Six months in, I still feel very much a novice but I love the continual learning and that every project is unique.
