VAMPIRE S KISS EJ HAUSER, ERIN HAYDEN, ALBERT OEHLEN, LAURA OWENS, & SIEBREN VERSTEEG CURATED BY TYLER BLACKWELL The title is taken from a 2003 quote by the artist David Reed, in which he considers painting s relationship to photography, new media, and other processes of mechanical reproduction. Reed declares that these technologies have been like a vampire s kiss that makes painting immortal. The exhibition will consider these implications more broadly and with a 21st century lens, featuring artists who variously utilize, reference, suggest, or sublimate computer aided gestures or digital visual motifs. By continually rethinking their own relationships to conventional painting and drawing processes, the artists in Vampire s Kiss complicate traditional modes of abstraction and ideas of painterly surface. Computer screen-made marks are intermixed with hand-applied impasto, paper, fixed algorithms, found imagery, printed ink, stretched canvas, and drawn pencil, often leading to dexterous, complex compositional layers, pictorial pairings, seductive color mash-ups, or jubilant, untethered abstraction. EJ HAUSER (New York) Her work has been exhibited at Cheim & Read, Gavin Brown s enterprise, Sperone Westwater, The Journal, and Regina Rex.
