Applicants linked to a department that is receiving substantial support through project funding in the framework of an IUC (Institutional University Cooperation) Partner Programme between VLIR and the concerned university in the South, are not eligible for an ICP/ITP scholarship. In this manner, VLIR ICP/ITP scholarship opportunities can be earmarked to address capacity building needs of other academic entities that do not yet receive such substantial IUC funding from VLIR. Attachment 1: guidelines letters of recommendation Two letters of recommendation are needed to support your application. The letter of recommendation is written by an academic staff member, scientist or superior who is familiar with your (academic/professional) activities. You should ask the recommender to clearly identify him- or herself: name, title, work place, contact details, valid email address, relation with the applicant. If possible, the recommender should use the official letter heading of his/her institution. Our faculty does not require a standard (template) recommendation letter. The recommender should give his/her opinion frankly as to the applicant s professional strengths and weaknesses. You should ask the recommender to include the following elements in the recommendation letter: 1. Clear identification of the person for whom the recommendation is given, and for which program. 2. Evaluation of the candidate's academic performance (study results) or professional performance. 3. Ranking of the candidate in comparison to his/her peers (top 50%, top 20%, top 5%, top 2%) with respect to intellectual ability, quality of oral expression and analytical ability. 4. Evaluation of the candidate's research capacity, potential and skills (dissertation or research papers, possible research experience, critical attitude, analytical skills ). 5. Suitability of the applicant for this specific program (knowledge of and/or experience with the topic(s), motivation for graduate study in general and this program in particular ). 6. Strong points and points to improve of the applicant s personality and social skills: how does the applicant interacts and collaborate with teachers, with peers, in group work, 7. Final conclusion as to why this applicant is (not) a suitable candidate for the program. The completed letter must be signed and dated by the recommender together with an official stamp of the institution he/she belongs to. The recommender should include the recommendation letter in a sealed envelope and return it to the applicant. The applicant should put the two sealed envelopes together with the other necessary documents into one admission package. vi_02 page: 8
