Chapter 1. Getting Started Log In Go to login.globalenglish.com and enter your unique username and password. If you have forgotten your username and/or password, click on Forgot your username or password? and follow the instructions. Profile Setup After logging in, you will be prompted to provide the following additional information so you can receive the most personalized experience possible: Enter your manager s email address Read and accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy Select areas of focus for skills training Choose business situations that you want to practice Subscriber Guide 3

Next you can choose to take a Placement Test or set your level manually. To choose your level, move the yellow button across the skill level scale. You will be able to see a description of Business English skills associated with each specific level. If you are unsure of the level at which you should begin, we recommend you take the Placement Test. Placement Test The Placement Test takes 45 minutes and has three sections. You don t have to do all three sections at the same time, but you need to complete at least one 15-minute section before you log out. You can complete other sections when you next log in, but if you don t complete the section before you log out, you will have to start again when you next log in. Subscriber Guide 4

After you complete your Placement Test, you will be placed at a GlobalEnglish level between 0 and 10. This is not a pass or fail test; the level placement will allow the GlobalEnglish Edge platform to develop a personal learning plan for you. Home Page After you have completed the Placement Test, you will arrive on the home page, which will always show your recommended study plan. You can choose to do any activity; you don t have to follow a linear order. Subscriber Guide 5

Check Your System Don t forget to go through all five check your system steps: 1. Audio 2. Flash Settings 3. Microphone 4. Speech 5. Results It s important to ensure that everything is working before you start your study journey. Subscriber Guide 6

Chapter 2. Study In addition to your study plan on your home page, you can access content for structured learning in the Study menu on the navigation panel. Subscriber Guide 7

Level Index Access all available activities for every level by going to the Study menu of the navigation menu and clicking on Level Index. Subscriber Guide 8

While in the Level Index section, you have the ability to access the Level Progress Test to review your progress, take the test for that specific level, and get a completion certificate if your score is 70% or higher. You can even download a study guide to help you prepare for the test. We recommend that you complete the Level Progress Test after completing all assignments in that level. Subscriber Guide 9

Stress and Intonation This feature can help you work on improving your auditory comprehension of the English language s rhythm, emphasis and intonation to become more confident in your pronunciation ability. Vocabulary Center This feature helps you develop key Business English terminology necessary for success at work. It includes more than 1,000 vocabulary words with a definition, translation into your native language and sample sentences, as well as playback technology for additional practice. Placement Test Take this test to identify your current English level. The test is used to suggest the appropriate level from which to start and to correlate your TOEIC score with your GlobalEnglish Business English Level. Refer to the Placement Test paragraph in the GETTING STARTED section for additional information. Business Situations This feature helps you choose skill-based activities in the GlobalEnglish levels that relate to specific business situations. By choosing a category, then a business skill topic, you can quickly access activities to help you with specific language to communicate in a variety of business situations: business socializing, business travel, meetings and conversations, presentations, telephoning, and negotiations. Grammar Center You can browse through videos that reinforce grammar principles and demonstrate exactly how grammar should be used in real conversations. Sounds of English The activities in the Sounds of English section feature focus on improving your ability to produce all 39 individual sounds comprising the English language. Subscriber Guide 12

Magazine This feature supports reading advancement through the use of current affairs and business articles. It helps expand your general business knowledge, regardless of your English language level, through authentic reading material. Test Preparation This section of GlobalEnglish Edge will help you prepare for the TOEIC test. It gives you a general overview of the test, helps you develop a study plan, introduces specific types of questions and offers practice tests with an opportunity to review explanations for all the answers after completion. Mobile Learning This feature offers a library of business-focused audio and video podcasts that can be downloaded to your computer, laptop or portable media player and played anywhere at your convenience. Podcasts are focused on Business English and feature highly relevant business situations: meetings, presentations, sales, telephoning, customer service, business writing and much more. Supplemental learning materials include study notes, targeted phrase practice and online exercises. You can easily search content by topic, skill level and media type. Offline Study This feature allows you to download assignments to and review tests on your computer and to continue to develop your Business English skills without an Internet connection. You can download one assignment or review a single test at a time; any progress you make offline is synchronized with your GlobalEnglish Edge online profile when you next log in. Additionally, you can synchronize your work when you are connected to the Internet. Subscriber Guide 14

Email Templates This feature includes 50 samples of the most common types of business correspondence. Each template can be directly imported into the Microsoft Outlook email platform or may be copied and utilized later to help improve the quality of your business correspondence. Writing Guidelines This feature provides general writing strategies, help with common writing problems and tips for handling different types of business communication. Subscriber Guide 16

Culture Notes The Culture Notes feature provides extensive cultural information to help you prepare for international business interactions and travel. Reports include details on the culture in 40 different countries, including characteristics of the society, top 10 tips, business etiquette, managing relationships and more. Accents and Dialects This feature provides more than 40 hours of listening practice with nearly 500 English audio samples from speakers in 65 countries. You will be prompted to select your desired region to access relevant audio samples. Subscriber Guide 17

Geographical Names This feature helps you learn the correct pronunciation of the vocabulary used in global business centers and other important cities in English-speaking countries. Authentic pronunciations of specific cities, counties and countries are provided by native English speakers. Subscriber Guide 18

GlobalEnglish LinGo Pro Under the Work menu in GlobalEnglish Edge, you can download our browser and smartphone Business English support app to quickly access essential Business English tools: Define, translate or hear any word Consult vocabulary lists by industry or by theme Learn and practice vocabulary words with flash cards Create your own vocabulary lists and sync them with your GlobalEnglish Edge vocabulary center The mobile version is available for iphone, Android, and BlackBerry Torch 9860 and 9850. GlobalEnglish Productivity Toolbar Download the GlobalEnglish Productivity Toolbar to quickly access essential GlobalEnglish features from your browser. You will get direct access to key GlobalEnglish Edge features: a text-entry box to instantly translate, define, and hear words and phrases and a shortcut to launch GlobalEnglish LinGo Pro. On Windows, the GlobalEnglish Productivity Toolbar is supported on Firefox and Internet Explorer. On Mac OS X, the GlobalEnglish Productivity Toolbar is supported on Firefox. Subscriber Guide 20

Chapter 4. Interact For an opportunity to interact with native English-speaking teachers, access GlobalEnglish Bloom and GlobalEnglish Coach through the Interact menu on the navigation menu. Talk with the Teacher This feature provides an interactive, engaging environment to practice your English and receive feedback from a teacher in a virtual group classroom. You can select the class that is most convenient for your schedule and join other GlobalEnglish subscribers from around the world to discuss current business issues and practice your speaking skills. Classes are designed to improve existing English speaking skills at all levels and are available 24x7. All teachers are native English speakers. Subscriber Guide 21

GlobalEnglish Bloom (subscription license required) GlobalEnglish Bloom is a collaboration platform focused on global communication collaboration in English for business purposes. You can create and upload written, video and audio content; receive feedback; ask and answer questions; and find subject matter experts. GlobalEnglish Coach (subscription license required) GlobalEnglish Coach is a customized service that integrates GlobalEnglish Edge with convenient one-to-one coaching sessions to provide individualized practice and support for accelerated English skills development.
