Assisting Clergy: Two dozen Although Trinity has had only 6 rectors from 1858 to date, we have experienced a rich variety of others, mostly since World War II. These worthies are called variously assistant rectors, curates, or, in three cases, vicars. They are hired by the rector with the support of the Vestry (who arrange for their compensation) and the approval of the Bishop of Maryland. Most of them have gone on to useful careers elsewhere in the Episcopal Church. Here is a roster of the reverend ladies and gentlemen who have helped make this parish work, with brief notes about other positions they have held, particularly the Maryland ones. 1903: Hugh W. S. Powers, son of the 2 nd rector, who went to St. Paul s, Baltimore, for a few years and then became the founding father of Holy Nativity on Garrison Avenue from 1917 to 1955. 1908-09 09 John Jackson, also served at St. Paul s and then elsewhere, becoming the Bishop of Louisiana from 1940 to 1950. 1910-11 11 Wesley Adams, rector of Nativity, Baltimore, 1921-39. 1912-22 22 William O. Smith, vicar of Good Shepherd, Ruxton, then rector until 1954. He also served part-time at Trinity until 1959. 1941-47 47 Blake Hammond. He went to Easton and became rector of Wicomico Parish until 1975. 1944-46 46 John Norman Hill, who was rector of Epiphany, Govans until it moved to Timonium, and also served St. Alban s, Glen Burnie. 1947-48 48 John Baden. He served as rector of St. James Monkton 1950-72; he became the Bishop Suffragan of Virginia from 1973-1980. 1949-51 Harry Zinzer, then to Grace and St. Peter s before moving away. He served at Advent Church, Baltimore from 1949-53, then went to the Diocese of Atlanta. 1949-51 Edward M. Green, who later served in New England and New York. 1953-56 56 Ronald Albaugh, who later served as rector of St. Thomas Hancock from 1957-65. 1956-1969 1969 P. Kingsley Smith [nothing much happened to him after that]. 1969-71 Charles E Danner, assistant; 1971-76 vicar at Holy Comforter
1969-71 Charles E Danner, assistant; 1971-76 vicar at Holy Comforter 1966-68 68 Edward LeCarpentier; he moved to North Carolina as a pastoral counselor. 1969-72 Joseph T. Webb; senior vicar of Holy Comforter 1973-82. He has retired to Williamsburg, VA. 1973-76 Edwin F. Gulick, then Grace, Elkridge; he become the Bishop of Kentucky in 1994. 1976-79 79 Arthur Lillicropp, who became rector of St. John s, Mt Washington. He now lives in California. 1978-82 82 W. He moved to Virginia and has recently left the Episcopal Church. 1986-91 91 Beverly Davis Braine. He was rector of St. Christopher s, Linthicum, until his untimely death in 2003 1995-2001 Frieda Malcolm. She then became rector of St. Alban s, Salisbury. 2002-07 07 Adrien Dawson, becoming rector of St. Mark s, Pikesville. 2007-- Joseph Rushton. AND: the? That s for W.
