International Principles Aalborg Municipality 2018-2021

Aalborg Municipality s international principles set the agenda for how we can become better and achieve more by actively engaging in international cooperation and relations, where it makes sense. Both internally and in cooperation with external partners. It must be attractive to be a citizen, business, culture and study center in Aalborg Municipality. A focused effort on international cooperation helps us to develop and improve the way we solve our tasks in cooperation with our citizens and companies. International cooperation has the ability to create frameworks and conditions that help our businesses grow internationally, to create a city that attracts and maintains international employees. Thus, international collaborations contribute to creating smart, sustainable urban development with a focus on the green economy. Through international cooperation, we can also take co-responsibility in selected areas and contribute to the development of the world. The international principles focus on how Aalborg Municipality participates in international cooperation and partnerships for action - locally and internationally. Did you know...? that we have 155 different nationalities in Aalborg that we have 11,000 international employees in Aalborg that we have 4,500 international students in Aalborg (University College of Northern Denmark and Aalborg University) that 27% of all private employees work in a foreign-owned company that 5% of the companies in Aalborg are foreign-owned

BETTER city Aalborg Municipality is a growing international city inviting the world to Aalborg and bringing Aalborg out into the world. Recruitment of employees and good hospitality towards international employees, together with an international focus especially in our schools, makes a significant contribution to continued growth and development of Aalborg Municipality. We want to be better at Engaging international citizens actively Inspiring an international mindset among our citizens Engaging new citizens in Aalborg Municipality - socially, professionally and educationally, thus visualizing the world in Aalborg Creating a sustainable and spatial environment for an open and international city and collaborating on an international level to find inspiration as to how BETTER WELFARE Aalborg Municipality is part of the international community. We will develop our core tasks by leaning on international experience and inspiration. We believe that through international networks we can gain access to new knowledge and benefit from it to ensure the best welfare for our citizens and improve the level of our core services. We want to be better at Applying external knowledge and inspiration to ensure even better welfare and a sustainable environment for our citizens regardless of age Continuing to develop Aalborg Municipality as an attractive workplace Creating the foundation for international citizens through education teaching children and young people an international mindset Involving international students in the services and solutions delivered by Aalborg Municipality and thereby creating ambassadors for the city

BETTER business In Aalborg Municipality, we have many international companies and employees - and more are coming. Aalborg Municipality is in competition with other cities and regions for growth and jobs. Therefore, it is important that we cooperate with other cities - and explore the world in partnerships. We want to be better at Making Aalborg visible in the world through developing and maintaining strategic international contacts and partners that support business development, job creation and growth - for example, in the Gothenburg-Hamburg growth axis. Strengthening the focus on green growth and becoming a leader on green growth - also internationally Creating an Aalborg with good business opportunities for growth and globalization attracting international investments and maintaining jobs Helping businesses enter international markets - for example, Scandinavia, Europe, Africa and China

As employees in Aalborg Municipality, we all have a responsibility for doing our work as good as possible. This is also the case in international relations, where skills in interacting internationally is a prerequisite for creating international cooperation at all levels. We share knowledge and cooperate across disciplines and administrations also internationally. We build on the principles of the municipality s staff policy by focusing on involvement and interdisciplinarity. Aalborg Municipality believes that the recruitment process becomes better by thinking across resources, perspectives and nationalities. We will continue to focus on hospitality For example, by seeing diversity as a strength and by respecting and taking into account differences when we welcome new citizens, employees and collaborators. We want to be even better ambassadors and nurture our international relations For example, by creating a good environment for international cooperation, where the cooperation must make sense and where we match expectations, goals and wishes for cooperation. We will be open to new ideas and working methods For example, by working and thinking holistically. We see our work and core tasks in a broader context - also internationally. We find solutions with an eye for the larger picture and we gain inspiration from outside as a contribution to transforming existing strategies and addressing specific challenges. We take responsibility also globally For example, by activating our skills through concrete projects that spread solutions to other parts of the world. We take responsibility and create social sustainability for local actions with international impact.
