N E W S L E T T E R Edition 40 Friday 15th December 2017 A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL 2017 school year is coming to a close and Christmas is just around the corner. This is the last newsletter for the year. Congratulations to our wonderful community for an outstanding year full of learning. We have had a focus on developing targeted teaching and delivering point of need teaching to each student at HPS in 2017. We have introduced Rock and Water to our wellbeing program which has provided students with the tools to deal with a wide range of social, emotional and physical situations. It is fantastic to work in a community where education is the focus and development of every student is paramount. I would like to thank the wonderful parents and families we have at HPS who work closely with the school to develop the opportunities for all. Whether you assisted in the classroom, on camps or excursions, PACH, School Council or assisting on Working bees, I thank you very much and look forward to your support in 2018. Lastly I d like to thank the wonderful staff. Each day, it is a joy to be part of the HPS community. In education the goal posts are constantly moving and HPS is no exception. 2018 HPS will be in a School Review year which is a chance for the school to reflect on the past 4 years and plan for the next 4. Captains Day A reminder that Tuesday 19 December is our annual Captains day where students have the opportunity to celebrate the year with their peers. Thank you to our fantastic School Captains, Davey and Reece and the House Captains for their leadership across all aspects of the school throughout the year. All students are asked to bring money to spend on all sorts of things including BBQ, drinks and all fun stalls run by the Captains. The funds raised will go towards new flags including Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. This day is also a free dress day for all students. Year 6 Graduation Thursday 21st is the Year 6 Graduation night, we all wish our Year 6 students the very best on that night and in the future. LAST Day of Term Friday 22 December will be our last day of the school year where we will farewell our Graduating Year 6 students. At 1.20pm we will have the Year 6 students walk through the guard of honor with their buddies. Remember that Friday is a free dress day for all students. 20 Token and 10 Token Congratulations to all of the students who achieved 10 or 20 tokens this year. It is an outstanding effort and your consistent good behaviour and ability to follow our school values and beliefs is a real credit to you and your family. I look forward to starting the Token Club again in 2018 with some changes to make it more interesting. Continued Page 3... 2 View Street, Healesville P.O. Principals Report (continued from Page 1) Tricia O Reilly Award Each year Healesville Primary School presents the Tricia O Reilly Memorial Scholarship to a student who embodies the qualities that Tricia portrayed. Academically accomplished, interested in being involved in all aspect of school activity and conscientious in always doing her best. They are also the sort of person who is sporty, cheerful, fun-loving and respectful. Tricia O Reilly was a student at Healesville Primary School and at Healesville High School when in 2001, tragically, she was killed in the main street of Healesville. That year an award and scholarship to honour Tricia was set up. It was with great pleasure that I presented, at assembly this week, the 2017 Tricia O Reilly Memorial Scholarship to Sienna C. Congratulations Sienna you are amazing. I would also like to thank the O Reilly family for attending the assembly; it is always a great honour to have you attend each year. 2018 House Captains Congratulations to the following students for being selected as the 2018 House Captains. Cameron Heath, Principal We are supporting the Coldstream Animal Aid Shelter by collecting items of food for Kittens, Cats, Puppies and Dogs. We are also collecting any old blankets for their bedding to make their lives better and treats to help with puppy training. We are passionate about helping animals and giving them a better life. This is a project that we decided to do as a group in our Girls Friendship Group. We would love your support. All you need to do is to bring cans of kitten and puppy food to the office and put them into the box out the front. Whiskas brand and loaf style are preferred. Thank you! The box will be at the office from Monday 11 December through to Wednesday 20 December. Thank you so much for your support. Coldstream Animal Aid is very grateful for your support. HELP US HELP THEM! The Wellbeing Corner Hello HPS Families and Friends, This week is the last of our series on HABITS. Over the past few weeks we have looked at how habits are formed and some key aspects that help create good habits in our lives. Things such as having a goal and applying the new behaviour consciously, then repeating the new behaviour over time and believing in yourself that you can do it are all important factors in making a new habit stick. Last week we debunked the popular belief that a habit can be formed in 21 days, and discovered that habits take anywhere from two to eight months to establish. This leads us to the final part in our series on habits; Staying Focused. It makes sense that if we need over two months to establish a new habit then we will require strong focus to maintain the new behaviour. To have strong focus, we need a powerful reason behind what we are aiming to achieve. Remind yourself every day why you want to form the habit and the great things it will bring once it is established in your life. For example, someone might want to change their eating habits by cutting out foods with a lot of sugar. Staying focused on this will be possible by regularly remembering why you want to eat more healthily especially when you have those times that you really feel like a piece of cake or lolly or soft drink. As we move closer to Christmas, enjoy this special time and think about what new habits you want to implement in the New Year. With a plan, and these principles in place, you will find success with creating great habits! This year has been wonderful spending time with the children and parents here at Healesville Primary. I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a fabulous Christmas and New Year. I look forward to seeing you back at school in 2018! Penny
