Statewide Respiratory Therapy Program Overview & Application Process All students interested in applying to the respiratory Therapy program are required to read the Statewide Respiratory Therapy Program Overview & Application Process which can be found on the Ivy Tech Website: http://www.ivytech.edu/respiratory-therapy/index.html. The Statewide Respiratory Therapy Program Overview & Application Process handbook has the complete application process listed. The statewide handbook covers general information about the Respiratory Therapy Program, Application Procedures, Curriculum, Evaluation of Student Learning, Student Responsibilities, Financial Information, Graduation information and a Verification Form. Respiratory Therapy Application Packet for the North Central Region. This application packet is intended to provide information specific to the North Central s Respiratory Therapy Program. Included in this packet are the following: review of the statewide application procedures, North Central Region s course sequencing, estimated program expenses, time commitment, North Central Region s application check list and forms. APPLICATION PROCEDURES A. APPLICATION TO THE COLLEGE STEP 1: Complete the Admissions Application and return it to the Office of Admissions. STEP 2: STEP 3: If a student has previously attended an accredited college(s), obtain additional transcript request forms from the Office of Admissions. The student will need to complete and mail the forms, with any applicable fees, to the college(s) that was previously attended. The student will complete the College s admission process which may include Accuplacer testing, a required student orientation and an initial advising session for course placement. STEP 4: Make an appointment with your local campus Respiratory Therapy Program Chair and/or attend a program information session. If you are currently eligible for admission into the Respiratory Therapy program, you will be enrolled as an undecided status (HLCR), which will enable you to pursue appropriate courses as a degree-seeking student. Apply on-line at www.ivytech.edu/appy-now/ and complete all the required steps to become an Ivy Tech Student. Call your local campus for further information. 5

B. APPLICATION TO THE RESPIRATORY THERAPY PROGRAM STEP ONE: Admission to Ivy Tech Community College Contact the Admissions Department for College admission requirements. Make an appointment with an academic advisor to schedule the required courses. STEP TWO: Apply to the Respiratory Therapy Program Attend a required program information session and/or meet with a program advisor; contact an academic/program advisor or the School of Health Sciences office for campus-specific advising requirements. Complete the following program pre-requisite courses: APHY 101 APHY 102 MATH 123 or Higher (will also accept MATH 118) ENGL 111 Application Criteria: o Earns a cumulative GPA 2.0 or higher o Attends an information session o Completes the four required pre-requisite courses by end of spring semester o Submits completed application & required forms by May 15 th deadline Program Application: o Deadline for submitting application materials for the North Central Region: May 15 th for fall admission Preference is given to program applications submitted by the stated deadline; but if necessary, the deadline may be extended to fill class seats. Selection Policy: When the program receives more qualified applicants than the number of seats available, a point system is utilized to determine admission to the program. o o Total points determine the rank of applicants. Subsequently, seats are offered to the highest rank on down until all seats are filled, the number of which are based on clinical site availability. Students who meet the application criteria and submitted their application by the deadline are ranked utilizing this point system at the end of spring semester. 6

o Ranking Points are based on the following: Points for the 1 st passing attempt for program prerequisite courses completed no later than the end of the spring semester: A = 20 points; B = 15 points; C = 10 points D = 5 points APHY 101 APHY 102 MATH 123 or Higher (will also accept MATH 118) ENGL 111 * Points awarded for CLEP or DANTES test-out credit = 10 points. Points for the Cumulative Ivy Tech GPA to the hundredth place. Tie Breaker If two students have the same ranking point value, then one (1) point will be given for the following work experience or current certifications: Current EMT or Paramedic Current LPN or RN Current Military Medic o Acceptance letters are mailed no later than June 15 th. In addition to the pre-requisite course and the program technical courses, the following courses are required to graduate: **BIOL 2XX **CHEM 1XX COMM 101 or COMM 102 PSYC 101 or SOCI 111 IVYT 1XX (preferred IVYT 112) **Because the Respiratory Therapy program is academically challenging, it is strongly recommended that students complete BIOL 2XX and CHEM 1XX prior to the start of the program. 7

Time Commitment The Respiratory Therapy Program requires a full-time commitment: The first year in the program you will need to budget between 40-54 hours/week. The second year you will need to budget between 35-45 hours/week depending on the semester. See this application packet for course sequencing. Additional time commitment will be needed if the student is completing any of the general education courses while in the respiratory therapy program. The first year: Fall 12 credits, Spring 11 credits, Summer 6 credits The second year: Fall 10 credits, and Spring is 7 Credits Class and lab scheduled times and days vary each semester. Class and Lab can start as early as 8 a.m. and end as late as 5:30 p.m. Clinical scheduled times, days and shifts vary each semester. Day shift may start as early as 6:00 a.m., evening shift may start as early as 2 p.m., and night shift may start as early as 10 p.m. Clinical shifts may vary from 8.5 hours to 12.5 hours each. You will be assigned to rotate to several clinical sites each semester. Final decision on assigned rotations and times will be made by the program faculty. Personal requests for hospital placement or shifts cannot be granted. Clinical Sites The required clinical courses for the Respiratory Therapy Program for North Central are conducted at the following clinical affiliates: Elkhart General Hospital; Goshen Hospital; Memorial Hospital & Health Systems; Memorial Home Health; Saint Joseph Regional Medical Centers in Mishawaka, and Kindred Hospital. The list of clinical affiliates may change to meet the needs of the program. Students must provide their own transportation and gas to their clinical experience. Transportation, gas or tolls are not provided by the college. 8

Estimated Respiratory Therapy Program Expenses The following is an estimate of the cost for the Respiratory courses once accepted into the program.. Credit hour fee: In-state $135.15, Out of State 264.40. Fees are subjective to change without notice.
