St Marie s School Newsletter No. 16 12 th January 2018 E-mail: enquiries@st-maries.sheffield.sch.uk Website: www.st-maries.sheffield.sch.uk @st_maries Our School Vision Statement Through working together, loving each other, and always doing our best, at St Marie s we will all become the amazing, unique individuals God wants us to be. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR FAMILIES Welcome back to the new school term. We look forward to an exciting, hard-working, fulfilling and holy 2018. We thank you for all of your support last year. With your help, we can and will achieve great things once more this year! CONGRATULATIONS To all our 60 & 80 pointer children from last term. On Thursday afternoon more than 150 children enjoyed a hot chocolate and biscuit with Mr Fernandes. Today, our 80 pointer children received their prize from book club. Well done to everyone. To all our Year 5 children who had the experience of playing their ukuleles to the delegates at Sheffield Hallam University on Wednesday during a Primary and Early Years Conference. They were fantastic, and great ambassadors for our school. We are very proud of them! To the school for celebrating our Epiphany mass on Tuesday with Fr. Paddy. It was a wonderful service. Below is a picture of Fr. Paddy with our Liturgy Leaders. YOUNG VOICES TUE 16th JAN Good luck to all the children taking part in the Young Voices concert next Tuesday. It promises to be another wonderful event combining the power of singing together as one to create an amazing performance. A letter, tickets and t-shirts are being sent home today. The letter from the Arena will also be emailed. Please ensure the school office has your pick-up information for after the event and please don t forget your packed evening meal and t-shirt on the day. SCHOOL MAINTENANCE FUND We have had a magnificent response to this with 26% of our families contributing last term. Please keep your donations coming in. We invite our parents to make an annual voluntary contribution towards our Governors Maintenance Fund. The fund is used for any building improvements made in school during the

academic year. This is available on the online payment system. Thank you to all the families that have already made a contribution. SMALL STEPS FOR PEACE Today, the children in Y5BT were the first class in KS2 to take part in a project to teach children how to resolve conflict peacefully. The Small Steps to Peace programme was delivered by projector facilitators from the Peace Foundation, who had also carried out staff training on the on Thursday evening to KS2 staff. This morning, the Y5s played some lively games followed by discussions about the feelings associated with being included, excluded, excited, frustrated and angry. The programme will be rolled out to all the KS2 classes and Mr Fernandes will take a representation from St Marie s to graduate as Peacebuilders in a ceremony at Warrington s Peace Centre after Easter. CLASS NEWSLETTERS The spring class newsletters have been posted on the website. Please check your own class page for details. ST VINCENT S St Marie's School will be playing an active role during 10am mass at St Vincent's next Sunday, 21st January. If your child is in St Vincent's parish and they would like to sit with Mrs Twomey and other children and staff from school for this mass, please let the school office know. LANGUAGE OF THE MONTH Our St Marie s language of the month is back. This month we will be learning some simple Italian. We welcome any family members and carers who can speak Italian to come into school to teach some phrases, read an Italian story or perhaps talk to the children about Italy. We are asking our school community to bring in any Italian objects or photographs to add to our whole school display in the dining room, grazie! BOOKS IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES We are currently in the process of creating a 'Books from around the world' section in the library. This section will allow children to read books in various different languages, some with the English translation too. If you are able to donate any bilingual books or books written in another language, it would be much appreciated. Please give any book donations to Miss Scriven, Mrs Shaw or the school office. ADMISSIONS CONSULTATION In response to statutory guidance received from the Catholic Education Service and the Diocese of Hallam, the Governors have determined that changes must be made to the admissions criteria for 2019-20. This means that the school must publicly consult on its proposed admissions arrangements for a period of six weeks. The consultation period for the 2019-2020 Admissions Policies is open until 4pm on 31st January 2018. The proposed arrangements, together with the proposed new Supplementary Information form have now been placed on the school s website and your comments on the changes would be welcomed. The principal changes from the policy of 2018-19 include: there are no sub categories, but children with certified medical/social needs receive priority in each category children with siblings already in the school receive second priority in each category there is a separate category for catechumens and members of Eastern Orthodox churches

The prioritisation of children with Education, Health and Care Plans (or with a Statement of Special Educational Needs), Catholic children who are siblings of Catholic children attending the school, Catholic children of staff, the tie-break arrangements, the maintenance of the waiting list and the procedures for inyear applications remain unchanged, therefore comments are not requested on these aspects of the proposed policy. If you have any comment to make, please contact the school via email lgraham@st-maries.sheffield.sch.uk or in writing and mark your correspondence for the attention of Lindsay Holmes, Clerk to Governors. Yours sincerely Mr J Fernandes Headteacher CHRISTMAS WRITING CHALLENGE Reminder that completed stories must be named and handed in by Wednesday 17 th January at the latest. 10 Amazon vouchers will be awarded to the winners and all entrants will receive a chocolate bar for their efforts.
