Teacher Training Brighton Eastbourne London Central London Highgate San Francisco São Paulo

Teacher Training Courses at St Giles St Giles was one of the first organisations to offer training for English language teachers in the UK. In addition, the Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), was first introduced in the USA by St Giles San Francisco. Our organisation offers teacher training for native and near-native speakers of English who wish to become teachers and also for practising teachers who want to improve their methodology and classroom skills.

Teacher Training Teacher Training courses are currently offered as follows: CELTA Cert. TESOL DELTA St Giles TEC (Tailor-made courses on request) Cambridge ICELT Module One Cambridge TKT Brighton Eastbourne London Central London Highgate San Francisco Sao Paolo Learning is more important than teaching, as every good teacher knows. Our teachers are therefore trained in learnercentred teaching techniques. Paul Lindsay, Founder of St Giles Our Teacher Trainers are highly skilled and experienced, and are also practising teachers, with extensive and varied experience teaching English in the UK and overseas. The St Giles Educational Trust, a registered charity, was established in 1970 to raise standards in the English Language Teaching (ELT) profession through its teacher training and research programmes. In addition to our Teacher Training programmes, the Trust runs the Central London ELT Library, a multi-media resource centre and library open to all members of the ELT profession, including our trainees. St Giles Teacher Training programmes are offered in Brighton, Eastbourne, London Central and London Highgate in the UK; San Francisco and Sao Paolo in the Americas. All our centres offer excellent study locations, and the latest in ELT resources and facilities, in a supportive and professional atmosphere. St Giles' worldwide network offers a wealth of job opportunities for newlytrained teachers, and we provide successful candidates with advice and assistance in finding work and developing their careers. All our centres also offer a range of comfortable and affordable accommodation, where required.

Cambridge CELTA, Trinity Cert. TESOL and Cambridge DELTA courses Cambridge CELTA and Trinity Cert. TESOL Teaching English as a foreign language is exciting, rewarding and immensely enjoyable. A qualification in ELT can open up opportunities to live and work in the UK and abroad, and meet people from all around the world. There are many different teacher training courses on the market, from online courses to full-time MA programmes and it can be difficult to decide which course is best for you. For initial training courses, St Giles only recommends the Trinity TESOL and the Cambridge CELTA. Both awards are internationally recognised which can help you find a good teaching job with an accredited school. Both the Trinity TESOL and the Cambridge CELTA course offer: A four-week programme of intensive study Teaching practice of six hours at two levels Observation of experienced teachers An internationally recognised certificate on passing Five units of learning Coursework assignments In England, Wales and Northern Ireland both the TESOL and CELTA are nationally recognised as being at Level Four of the National Qualifications Framework. CELTA Course Programme Unit 1: Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context Unit 2: Language analysis and awareness Unit 3: Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing Unit 4: Planning and resources for different contexts Unit 5: Developing teaching skills and professionalism There is no final examination, but an external assessor, appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course. There are two components of assessment: Teaching practice You are expected to teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is continuous and based on your overall performance by the end of the six hours. Written assignments You will be asked to complete four written assignments; one focusing on adult learning; one on the language system of English; one on language skills; and one on classroom teaching. To gain the certificate you must pass both components. There are three grades - Pass, Pass 'B' and Pass 'A'. More information on all Cambridge teaching awards can be found at: www.cambridgeesol.org/teaching/index.htm Trinity TESOL Course Programme Unit 1: Teaching skills Unit 2: Language awareness (including grammar, vocabulary and phonology, assessed through teaching practice and a written test) Unit 3: Learner profile Unit 4: Materials assignment Unit 5: Unknown language (experience learning a language unknown to you) There is no final exam but the work for Units 1, 2, 3 and 5 is marked by your internal course tutors and Unit 4 by an external Trinity moderator. Teaching practice You are expected to teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is continuous and based on your overall performance by the end of the six hours. Written assignments You will be asked to complete two written assignments; one focusing on adult learning, assessing individual learners' needs and providing them with one-to-one lessons; one involves creating your own teaching materials, using them in teaching practice and evaluating them. On-going coursework assignments You are expected to complete two coursework assignments; one Observation Journal and one Unknown Foreign Language Journal. Test A language awareness test is given at the end of the course. To gain the certificate you must pass all components. Trinity College London awards a Pass or Fail grade.

Applicants may usually borrow up to 80% of the course fees from one of the participating banks. Note: CDL applications can be very slow. It is vital that you make an application well in advance of the course you wish to take in order for funding to be in place in sufficient time.

Courses for Overseas Teachers of English St Giles Teachers of English Courses St Giles TEC is a teacher development course for non-native teachers of English from all over the world who want to improve their English for professional and personal reasons. Two and four-week courses are available at all the St Giles centres in the UK and USA. Participants develop and explore aspects of teaching methodology and techniques, and learn to assess and utilise a variety of teaching aids and resources. There is no formal assessment, but participants can opt to prepare for Cambridge TKT, as detailed below. At the end of the course, all participants receive a certificate of attendance and a St Giles Teachers of English Course Certificate. The main elements of the course are: Language development Background to language learning and teaching Different methodologies for teaching Classroom management and practical teaching skills Lesson planning Teaching aids and resources Observation of experienced teachers These courses are designed to be very flexible, and can be adapted to suit the specific needs of the participants. We can also arrange closed group courses for groups of teachers travelling together at any time of year. Teaching Knowledge Test TKT is a Cambridge award for English language teachers, testing professional knowledge. The test aims to increase teachers confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world. TKT can be taken at any stage in a teacher s career, and is also ideal for those who have not yet started teaching. St Giles offers TKT in conjunction with TEC and ICELT Module One courses. Candidates decide on the number of TKT modules they will prepare for before the start of their course, and take the test(s) during the final week. Candidates prepare for TKT through input sessions and directed study. The exam fee is the only additional charge. Cambridge ICELT ICELT (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching) is a Cambridge award for teachers of English, which aims to deepen and develop candidates' teaching knowledge and expertise. It is divided into two modules: Module One Component One: Language for Teachers Module Two Component Two: Teaching Component Three: Methodology Candidates must have at least an upper-intermediate level of English, and should be practising teachers. Component One can be completed either in the UK or in the participants' home country. Components Two and Three can only be completed in their home country, as the teachers' teaching context needs to be taken into account. St Giles offers the opportunity to complete all or part of the full ICELT.

Teacher Training ICELT Module One: Language for Teachers These are intensive four-week courses, offered in the UK at St Giles Brighton. For this module, candidates are required to be practising teachers with a minimum of 100 hours teaching experience. The module aims to develop teaching methodology, professional language and communication skills in English. Individual teachers can enrol for the dates stated in our published material. The participants in these courses are normally from a variety of countries. Closed groups (teachers working at a single institution or group of institutions in the same geographical area) can arrange the course at any suitable time of the year. A closed group needs to contact St Giles as a ready-formed group before arrangements can begin. Course Content Six assessed language tasks Teaching practice to aid completion of the language tasks Input sessions on professional language, methodology and practical teaching skills Optional preparation for Cambridge TKT The course and assessment are moderated by Cambridge ESOL. Successful candidates are awarded the Cambridge Language for Teachers Certificate with a grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction. ICELT This is the full ICELT course (Modules One and Two), and is only organised for closed groups of teachers from one institution or group of institutions in the same geographical area. A closed group needs to contact St Giles as a ready-formed group before arrangements can begin. The course covers a period of six months, and combines face-to-face input at an approved site in the home country with some distance learning completed in the candidates own time. Entry Requirements Candidates should be practising teachers with a minimum of 500 hours' teaching experience by the end of the course. Course Content Candidates complete four Language for Teachers tasks, four assessed lessons and four written methodology assignments. The course is moderated by an external moderator, appointed by Cambridge ESOL. Successful candidates are awarded the Cambridge ICELT Certificate with a grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction. It is possible for closed groups to complete Module One in the UK and then take Module Two later in their home country; this must be done within three years of successfully completing Module One. Successful candidates would then be awarded the full Cambridge ICELT certificate. If you would like information about ICELT courses in your country, please contact us. More information on all Cambridge teaching awards can be found at: www.cambridgeesol.org/teaching/index.htm Funding Teachers from the EU enrolling on a St Giles Teacher Training course for non-native teachers may be eligible for funding under the EU Comenius-Gruntvig Programme. Comenius-Gruntvig provides training grants for staff involved in school education to attend training courses of up to four weeks in length in participating European countries. The deadlines for grant applications are well in advance of the course dates, so it is necessary to apply early. Those seeking EU funding need to contact their National Agency.
