Lake-Sumter State College Course Syllabus Course / Prefix Number MAC 1105 Course Title: College Algebra CRN: 30372 Credit: 3 Term: Summer 2015 Course Catalog Description: Instructor: This is a rigorous introduction to the math concepts necessary for successful study of MAC2233 or MAC1140. This course is primarily a conceptual study of functions and graphs, their applications, and of systems of equations and inequalities. Linear, quadratic, rational, absolute value, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions will be investigated. If you are unfamiliar with Lakehawk Mail, follow the link on the college homepage for information. You will need an access code for MyMathLab (purchased online through the publisher s site or from the LSSC bookstore). Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the registration process. You will be aided in this process, if necessary, during your first emporium meeting. There is a 10 day free period, so to not be behind on the computer work, be sure to sign up as soon as possible. A scientific calculator is required for this course. The TI-30XS MultiView calculator is strongly recommended and will be provided in the emporium for tests and practice. Graphing calculators are not permitted in this course. Course Objectives: (what the course will do) To understand the concept of functions and to algebraically and graphically manipulate linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. 1

After successful completion of this course: Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Assessed in this Course: (what the students take with them beyond this course) 1. Students will demonstrate the ability to solve a variety of equations, systems of linear equations, linear inequalities, and absolute value inequalities including problems involving real-world applications. 2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of properties of functions, including domain and range. Students will also demonstrate the knowledge of operations on functions, including inverse functions, and composition of functions. 3. Students will demonstrate the ability to graph basic functions and transformations of functions including linear, quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office. Attendance for office hours is optional, but recommended. The test dates are fixed. Missing a test will result in a 0% on that test. Exceptions will be granted only with hospital or doctor s order indicating an emergency. If you wish to withdraw from the course, it is your responsibility to go to the Admissions Office and do so officially, or you will receive your calculated course grade. Withdrawal Deadline: Methods of Evaluation: The deadline for withdrawing from this course is Wednesday, June 3 rd, 2015 by 4:30 PM The content in this class is arranged into five modules. Each module contains homework, quizzes, and a test. Your final grade in the course is based on the following components: 2

Participation 4% Homework Average 4% Quiz Average 8% Graphing Projects 4% Test Average 60% Final Exam 20% Participation Each week, you will be required to attend class, work in the emporium on campus with your instructor during regularly scheduled class meetings, and work in the emporium on your own (flex time). To earn the credit for each module, you must have completed a total of 4 hours in the emporium each week of the module. You will also be expected to complete work in the course supplement, the Guided Notebook. This will be scored for completeness periodically, usually on test days. Homework All graded homework will be assigned through MyMathLab. You have unlimited attempts at homework problems but the homework must be completed by the specified due dates that are detailed in MyMathLab. The e-text homework at the ends of sections is optional. Quizzes You will have 2 MyMathLab quizzes for each module. You will be given 2 attempts for each quiz. To take a quiz, you must have scored at least 70% on the homework for that quiz. Time for each quiz is 60 minutes. You will be able to see time remaining for each attempt. Your best attempt will count towards your quiz average. The due dates for the quizzes are detailed in MyMathLab. Graphing Projects - In addition to the quizzes in MyMathLab, there will be two graphing projects. These will be group activities involving graphing functions without technology to reinforce knowledge of graphs of functions. You will be tested on this material in tests Module 4 and 5. Study Plan Your success on quizzes is used to update your study plan. The study plan gives you additional practice on the concepts for which you need extra help based on your quiz results. The study plan is not part of your course grade but may be important in helping you prepare for the module test. Module Tests See attached calendar for test dates. Make-up tests are given in extreme circumstances only at the discretion of the instructor. You must have the instructor s permission to take a make-up test BEFORE the test is given to your class. Call or email your instructor prior to the test date and GET A RESPONSE before you make plans to take a make-up test. Your instructor may ask you to supply supporting documentation (such as a doctor s note) to justify the accommodation. Final Exam You will have a cumulative final exam at the end of the course during the designated final exam time for this course. The date and time are listed on the course schedule. If you miss no more than three classes (including emporium class meetings), you may replace your lowest test grade (not a missed test) with the grade you receive on your final if the final exam grade is higher. 3

The final exam for this course is on Thursday, 6/18/2015. All answers must be in simplified form. For example, all fractions must be reduced. Other specifications will be made in class. If you are caught cheating, you will either fail the assignment/test or fail the course, at the discretion of the instructor. No warning will be given.
