Math 1314.WB7 College Algebra Web Based Fall, 2011 08/22/2011 12/06/2011 Instructor: Lynnette Schillo Office: ET 117 Phone: 335-6635 E-mail: lschillo@odessa.edu -- This is the best mode for contacting me. Welcome to College Algebra! This sheet will tell you about the course, including subject matter, homework, exams and term grade. Almost all of your questions about the course can be answered by reading this and the introduction handout. If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to ask for clarification. Good Luck!!! MATH 1314 College Algebra 3hours Includes sets, complex numbers, quadratic and quadratic form equations, inequalities, functions, systems of equations and topics selected from exponential and logrithmic functions, matrices, determinants, binomial theorem, math induction and sequences and series. The student will learn to select appropriate mathematical techniques and technologies and use skills in information organizing, processing, planning and problem solving. The student should be able to probe for mathematical meaning and, perhaps, describe these meanings to others. Placement testing available. (SCANS 3, 8, 9, 11) Prerequisite: MATH 0375 passed with a C or better, high school Algebra II, or an independent school district/oc dual enrollment form. Learning Outcomes After completing this course, the student should be able to demonstrate competency in: 1.0 Functions and graphs 2.0 Polynomials and rational functions 3.0 Exponential and logarithmic functions 4.0 Systems of equations and matrices 5.0 Other topics in algebra Required Materials Required Software: MyMathLab Course ID: schillo93937 Optional Textbook: College Algebra by Blitzer, 5th Edition, : Pearson Publishing Co. 2010. Scientific (not graphing) calculator Technology: Online students must have a valid e-mail address to register for computer software. The email address that you use to register your software will be the email address to which I will send any information or announcements. Please check this account regularly. It is recommended that you use your Odessa College email address. All work is done through the internet, so you need

internet access. If you do not have access to the internet, you may use the computers in the math lab. Term Grade Your term grade will be determined according to the following distribution: Homework 15% Discussion Board 10% Average of 4 Tests 40% Final 35% Please note that I will be checking in on your progress weekly. This includes checking the time you are spending in each section, the homework you have completed, and the exam status. Percentage (%) Grade 90-100 A 80-89.9 B 70-79.9 C 60-69.9 D Below 60 F Homework Homework will be assigned for each section. There are suggested dates for completion of the homework, which will ensure that you complete the course on time. These are listed in the suggested completion dates section under the Course Information link in MyMathLab. Your two lowest homework grades will be dropped. The homework has many helpful tools built in (Help Me Solve This, View an Example, Ask My Instructor. Etc). Please familiarize yourself with these at the beginning of the semester and use them as you need. Exams You are allowed two attempts on each of the 4 midterms. I strongly suggest that you take your first attempt at least one day prior to the due date to allow time for studying your mistakes and improving your grade, if needed. The suggested completion date is shown on the suggested completion dates document. I will review midterm exams for partial credit if they are submitted by the suggested completion date. Note that I will NOT review exams for those people who fail the first attempt and do not try a second time, and I will NOT review exams that are submitted after the suggested completion date. To see a list of the suggested completion dates, go to the Course Information link in MyMathLab. The final exam is comprehensive and will be proctored. You will only be allowed one attempt on the final exam. You must present a picture ID before taking the final exam. All students will take the final exam in the Math Lab located in the OC Mathematics Department. The final exam is comprehensive and must be taken between

Saturday, December 3 and Tuesday, December 6. Exact times will be posted at a later date. You will not be allowed to bring your cell phone into the final exam area. If you do not take the final exam, you will receive an F for the course. Communication Communication plays a vital role in an online student s success. Communication methods for this course include announcements, email, and discussion boards. Feel free to use any of these options as you feel are necessary. Any emails I receive will be answered within 2 business days. Lecture/Practice Video lectures are available for the course, and there are many practice questions given throughout the course. These items can be found in the study plan section. I strongly encourage you to watch the lectures and try some practice problems prior to beginning your homework. Tegrity lessons are also available through blackboard. See Information Sheet for more detail. Dropping The last day to drop a course at Odessa College for the Fall semester is Wednesday, November 9.
