Lake-Sumter State College Course Syllabus Course / Prefix Number STA 2023 Course Title: Elementary Statistics I CRN: 30045 Credit: 3 Term: Summer 2013 Course Catalog Description: Instructor: Prerequisites: Textbook and Other Course Materials: This course introduces the student to topics including measures of central tendency and spread, probability, random variables, binomial and normal probability distributions, confidence interval estimation, small sample inferences, and hypothesis testing. Development of fundamental statistical methods including applications to business, social sciences, physical sciences, and engineering sciences. 1. The student will understand the basic principles of designing a study. 2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of descriptive statistics through performing and interpreting calculations, organizing raw data, and creating graphs and tables to display information, with and without the use of appropriate technology. 3. The student will be able to make sound inferences about a population based on procedures performed on sample data. 1

The student will use appropriate formulas and/or tables to determine the probability of events occurring using basic probability rules, the binomial probability distribution, and the normal probability distribution. Withdrawal Deadline: The deadline for withdrawing from this course this semester is Wednesday, July 10, 2013. Your grade is based on four components: in class tests, online quizzes, online homework, and a final exam. Make-up tests will be given at the discretion of the instructor. You must have my permission to take a make-up test BEFORE the test is given to your class. Call or email me prior to the test date and GET A RESPONSE from me before you make plans to take a make-up test. I may ask you to supply supporting documentation (such as a doctor s note) to justify the accommodation. Methods of Evaluation: NO make-up quizzes or homework will be allowed. Quizzes will be administered through MyLab and must be completed by the due date & time. The lowest quiz score will be dropped and your remaining quizzes will be averaged for your quiz grade. ONLINE homework: A portion of your grade will be earned through the completion of online homework. This homework is assigned in MyLab and must be completed by the due date. Grading Scale: Course Calendar: A = 90% or higher B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% F = Below 60% More detailed information can be found in the tentative schedule listed on the last page. Classroom Rules and Policies: All answers must be in simplified form. For example, all fractions must be reduced. Other specifications will be made in class. If you are disruptive, then I will ask you to leave and you will be counted as absent. Turn off all cell phone ringers and other non-required electronic devices (i.e. laptop, ipod, mp3, blackberry, etc) before class. Students using unauthorized electronic devices during class will be asked to leave and counted as absent. If you are late and I am giving a test, then you have only the remaining class time to complete the test, as do the students who were on time. If you are caught cheating, you will either fail the assignment/test/quiz or fail the course, at the discretion of the instructor. No warning will be given.
