Selected topics on astronomy, chemistry, geology and physics are included. Emphasis is placed on understanding the fundamental principles of the physical sciences. It will also include a discussion of the limitations and potential applications of the physical sciences. This course requires laboratory work. Textbooks The Physical Universe, Krauskopf and Beisner. 15 th edition Laboratory Manual, Instructor will provide students with a copy. Physical Science Winter 2018 2 Examinations Exams are scheduled during class time (see attached class schedule). The exams will be a combination of multiple choice, true/false and essay questions. Students are required to bring a scantron form and a calculator to each exam. Students are responsible for all reading material in the chapters covered in the textbook, however, exams will focus on the topics stressed in lecture and laboratory. If you have a serious problem and can't attend an exam, you must contact me before the scheduled exam to make an appointment for a make-up. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a zero for that exam. A make-up test will only be scheduled for a student once per semester. If a class is canceled on the day of a scheduled exam, students should assume the exam would be taken on the next class day. Post-tests Post-tests will occur at the start of lecture the class period following Exams 1, 2, 3, & 4. Students will be divided into groups and work together on more difficult questions from the exam taken the previous class period. One answer sheet will be handed in per group. Students will be allowed to use their notes, textbook, and each other (no internet). These posttests are group work so they cannot be made up. Students that are late or absent on the day of the post-tests will not be able to make up these points and will use the score that they received on these questions from their individual tests. Laboratory The laboratory will consist of "hands on" physics, chemistry, and earth science laboratory exercises that are listed on page 5. The lab exercises will be completed during the lab and lab summary sheets/questions are due at the end of each lab. Students are required to bring calculators to all laboratory sessions. Due to the fact that the laboratory exercises require equipment set up and supervision there will be no make-up for the lab exercises. Absence from a lab will result in an automatic zero for that date's lab exercise. If a student does not bring his/her laboratory manual to lab they can only receive half credit for completing that lab. Also, if a student is more than 5 minutes late for lab they will only receive half credit for the lab and if they are more than 10 minutes late they will receive no credit for the lab. Any student that attends less than 50% of the laboratory sessions will NOT receive a passing grade for this course. Cell phone use is prohibited in laboratory during the entire semester. Two points will be deducted from a student s laboratory grade each time a student is asked to put their cell phone away during the laboratory period. Homework Points The course includes assigned homework problems that are expected to be completed on days assigned but are not handed in. However, problems will be chosen from these assignments to hand in on index cards on unannounced days throughout the semester. Students will have five minutes during lecture to complete these problems and only correct answers will receive these homework points. Students must provide the 4X6 inch index cards for these points. Points will not be given if not on a 4 x 6 inch index card. Students must be present in the classroom to answer these Homework Point questions and receive credit. There will be no make-up for these problems and they will not be accepted late, no exceptions.

When you take a test, you are expected to keep your eyes on your own paper and protect your test paper from being copied by a classmate.
