This meeting was unique in the manner as its theme was decided based on the vision of our new Prime Minister i.e. Achievements during last 5 years and Road Map for next 5 years. The inaugural session was presided by Sh. Y.S.K. Seshu Kumar, Joint Secretary (A.E.) and Director General, National Literacy Mission Authority, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Before the inaugural address, he interacted with Regional Directors to know the problems faced by them in their region in implementing NIOS policies. Khaware, Secretary, NIOS urged the Regional Directors to address core issues such as empowering learners, strengthening of Student Support Services and harnessing technological inputs such as teleconferencing etc. Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Director, Student Support Services Department spoke about the initiatives of the Student Support Services Department to improve the quality of services rendered to learners. He informed that in the past, efforts have been made to improve the services. On this occasion, first of all Online File Tracking System was inaugurated by Sh. Seshu Kumar. Thereafter, 1

He was of the opinion that efforts made by SSS Department will certainly yield results in streamlining the support services. Thereafter as per the theme of the meeting, all the Heads of Departments and Regional Directors made presentations on Achievements during last five years and Road Map for next five years. Also, a status report about the cleanliness of the Regional Centres, and the status of weeding out was also made which was also appreciated by Sh. Seshu Kumar. On 1 st July, 2014, Valedictory function was held at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. Prof (Dr.) Asha Kanwar, President & CEO, Commonwealth of Learning (COL) was the chief guest. While welcoming Dr. Kanwar, Dr. S.S. Jena acknowledged the support extended by COL to NIOS. This two day workshop was aimed at orienting the participants to use Virtual Open Schooling platform; enabling them to create NIOS courses using Moodle learning management system; creating and/ or transforming existing content for online delivery and developing 3

WORKSHOP ON DEVELOPING ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS THROUGH OPEN SCHOOLING A one day consultative workshop on Developing Environmental Awareness through Open Schooling was held on 9 th June, 2014 in the Academic Department of NIOS. The inaugural ceremony began with a welcome address by Dr. Kuldeep Agarwal, Director (Academic), NIOS. Welcoming the Chief Guest, Ms. Kanchi Kohli, an Environmental Activist and other participants of the workshop, he said that awareness on the Environment is a major concern in the present scenario and integrating such issues in the school curriculum is a challenging task. In Session-I, Ms. Kanchi Kohli presented a lecture on Developing Environmental Awareness through Open Schooling in which she cited three scenarios of environmental issues in India which include the Dongria Kondha, Niyamgiri Hills and Bauxite Mining in Odisha, Farm forest Mosalics in Karnataka and Flamingoes, Fishing Shelters and Port in Mundra, Gujarat. She also stressed on the need for an interdisciplinary approach in the open schooling system. Session-II consisted of a panel discussion on Go Green-Save Environment. The panelists were Dr. Bharati Sarakar, Associate Professor in Biology, Delhi University; Dr. Nimish Kapoor, Sr. Scientist, Prasar Bharati; and Dr. Vandana Mishra, Assistant Professor in Biology, Delhi University. Dr. Kuldeep Agarwal, Director (Academic) moderated the panel discussion. Dr. Vandana Mishra discussed on the importance of ecoclubs. And pointed out the importance of an interactive and integrating approach in the Self Learning Materials of NIOS. Dr. Kapoor also focused on the importance of trees; soil and water as main dimensions for the preservation of the environment.
