ACADEMIC MATTERS COUNCIL The Program in Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies is proposing to revise the requirements for its B.A. program in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. Currently, the degree program has two tracks: One in Literature and Culture and a second in Area Studies. The program proposes to drop Literature and Culture track because few students choose it and there are insufficient courses to support it. The proposal also calls for revising the requirements of the Area Studies option to reflect new course options and bring the requirements in line with those of other language majors. At its meeting on March 1, 2017, the Academic Matters Council voted unanimously to recommend Faculty Senate approval of the Revision of the Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Program in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. It was submitted as Proposal #3156 in the Course and Curriculum Management System. ACADEMIC PRIORITIES COUNCIL On February 24, 2017, the Academic Priorities Council endorsed approval of this proposal. PROGRAM AND BUDGET COUNCIL This proposal revises the requirements for the B.A. in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. The proposal responds to courses in Russian literature or culture no longer being available on campus. The revised requirements bring the major in line with other language majors at UMass and the Russian majors at colleges and universities. There is no cost or requested resources associated with this proposal. At it meeting on February 15, 2017, the Program and Budget Council unanimously approved the Revision of the Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Program in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, proposal #3156 in the Course and Curriculum Management System. MOTION: That the Faculty Senate approve the Revision of the Requirements of the Bachelor 24-17 of Arts (B.A.) Program in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, as presented in.
Please describe your proposal. The proposal is designed to revise the requirements for the B.A. in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. Please describe the existing program requirements, listing all required courses and available electives, as well as any additional requirements, and continuation or admissions policies. The major has a basic set of language requirements and options in literature and culture or area studies. I. Pre-major preparation (12 credits) RUSSIAN 110 & 120, Elementary Russian I & II, or equivalent RUSSIAN 230 & 240, Intermediate Russian I & II, or equivalent I Advanced Language Core (6 credits): RUSSIAN 301 & 302, Advanced Russian I & II, or equivalent Completion of track option (30 credits) A. Literature and Culture Ten courses, of which a minimum of four must be directly related to Russian literature and/or culture. Of the remaining six courses, a maximum of three may be chosen from courses in Comparative Literature, English or other literary disciplines, and a maximum of three may be chosen from courses dealing with the Russian and East European area in History, Political Science or other social science disciplines. Course selection should be made in consultation with the major advisor. B. Area Studies Ten courses dealing with the Russian and East European area in a minimum of three disciplines chosen from Anthropology, Comparative Literature, Economics, History, Judaic Studies, Political Science, Russian, or Sociology. Appropriate courses taught at the other four colleges or in an exchange program may also serve to meet this requirement. With the approval of the major adviser, a student pursuing this track may substitute equivalent work in a Slavic or East European language other than Russian for the premajor and advanced language core requirements. IV. Junior Year Writing Requirement and Integrative Experience Requirement Please describe the requirements that you are proposing, listing course requirements, elective options, as well as any additional requirements, and continuation or admissions policies. The major in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies requires students to complete 14 courses. I. Language Core RUSSIAN 110 and 120 (Elementary Russian I and II), or equivalent RUSSIAN 230 and 240 (Intermediate Russian I and II), or equivalent RUSSIAN 301 and 302 (Advanced Russian I and II), or equivalent OR POLISH 110 and 120 (Elementary Polish I and II), or equivalent POLISH 230 and 240 (Intermediate Polish I and II), or equivalent Advanced Polish I and II (taught as independent studies)
Notes: 1) RUSSIAN 301-302 are not currently available on campus. The advanced language requirement for the major must therefore be satisfied through courses at Amherst, Mount Holyoke or Smith colleges, or by equivalent work done elsewhere, including study abroad. 2) Students testing with Russian language proficiency at the intermediate level must either complete the advanced language requirement or take two additional courses from Section 3) With the approval of the major advisor, a student may substitute equivalent work in a Slavic, East European or Central Asian language other than Russian for the language core requirement. I Coursework Six courses dealing with the Russian, East European and Eurasian area in a minimum of three disciplines chosen from Anthropology, Comparative Literature, Economics, English, History, Judaic Studies, Political Science, Sociology, or Russian. Appropriate courses taught at the other four colleges, in an exchange program or study abroad may also serve to meet this requirement with the approval of the major advisor. Junior Year Writing Requirement and Integrative Experience Requirement These General Education requirements may be satisfied by so-designated courses in Anthropology, Comparative Literature, History, Political Science or other departments. Restrictions A cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required for courses used to satisfy the major requirements; no Pass/Fail option may be applied in such courses. Please provide the rationale for these revisions. 1. The Literature and Culture option is eliminated because a) it attracted almost no students and b) with the retirement of Prof. Laszlo Dienes, no courses in Russian literature or culture are available on campus. 2. What had been the Area Studies option now includes courses in Anthropology, Legal Studies and Political Science that had previously not been offered. 3. Russian 110, 120, 230 and 240 are now four-credit courses. 4. The revised requirements bring the major in line with other language majors at UMass and the Russian majors at the Four Colleges and other universities. For proposals involving instruction, indicate how many new enrollments are expected and whether the courses have room to accommodate them. Russian-language instruction is currently supported by collaboration between Five Colleges, Inc. and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The funding from Five Colleges, Inc. is guaranteed through AY 2018-19. Area Studies courses are offered by faculty members in CHFA and CSBS.
