Already our students are settled, setting future goals for their learning and are happily collaborating with other students they haven t worked with before. The large attendance to acquaintance night last Tuesday also set the scene for the continued strong relationships between our teachers and extremely supportive parents that we have. Everyone has also adjusted to the new learning spaces and have been using newly established outdoor learning areas creatively. Our new bike shed is being very well used. AGM Last week you would have received (via email and SKOOLBAG), information around our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 21 st February. At the AGM we share our Annual report with the community and outline future directions. We have already received a few nominations for election to the Governing Council. It is a great opportunity to be a part of our school s decision making processes. Spaces are still available so please send in your nomination forms asap to our front office. CYBER BULLYING Since the very public death of Dolly Everett the media have taken the view that all responsibility for such a terrible tragedy should go onto schools. We are mandated to teach cyber bullying through our Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum and we take on board our role in educating our students on social media safety very seriously. At PPS students do not use their phones at school although there are times under the supervision of a staff member they may be given permission to take a photo of their homework or use a photo taken at home for school work. At all other times phones are secured by teachers. In all the cases of bullying I have dealt with over recent years, where students have put themselves at risk or have used inappropriate language, all incidents have happened after school hours and often very late at night. Please be proactive and be aware of what sites your child is using, have access to their passwords and constantly remind them of the dangers when using social media. Please put these dates in your diaries. PROSPECT PRIMARY SCHOOL E- NEWSLETTER Issue 11 2 In conjunction with SAPOL I have organized a parent information night to help you protect your children against cyber bullying and your role in educating them to block and report inappropriate media usage. Students from years 5, 6 and 7 will also be receiving an hour lesson from SAPOL on the same issues. This will be happening Monday 19th February. The information night will be held on Wednesday, February 28 th at 7pm in the staffroom. I thoroughly encourage you to be there. Pupil Free dates I have been asked to re-send out Pupil Free Days information that I sent out in Week 9 last year. Please ensure that you have these dates recorded so you can arrange any planned holidays within the holiday breaks. Anytime your child is away beyond a week you will need to apply for an exemption by filling out an APPLICATION FOR EXEMPTION FROM SCHOOL ENROLMENT/ATTENDANCE AND EDUCATION ENROLMENT/PARTICIPATION. We took our issue to the students and through a consultative process we have decided to trial a term of having weekly assemblies with our students being divided into two groups. As suggested by the students, each group will consist of classes from Foundation to 7 and also include their buddy class. Below is how the students divided the school. Rms 1A, 1B, 3, 7, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17 & 18 Rms 1, 2, 4, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, & 20

PROSPECT PRIMARY SCHOOL E- NEWSLETTER Issue 11 5 A GIFT FROM PROSPECT CHILDCARE CENTRE I would like to acknowledge the wonderful gift we have received from our neighbouring CPC. Kerri Smith (Director) worked on the fencing project for a considerable length of time. Working closely with the Artist Maryanne Ryan, Kerri kindly considered the aesthetics to our school and came up with the idea of the artworks being visible from both sides of the fence and therefore could enjoyed by both the CPC children and our students. Kerri also kindly sent me information around the significance of the fence and the Aboriginal links associated with its beauty. From Kerri s information: Kathryn was one of the mums at the centre who had 2 children Quade and Elisha with us. Sadly Kathryn passed away in June 2016. This fence is created to honour their family and bring a light, bright memory of the family to our service. I hope your children, educators and families get as much pleasure from this space as we will. I believe it is a vast improvement for the space that both the school and centre have been able to benefit from. From Maryann Ryan the artist and sister of Kathryn In memory of Kathryn I have chosen to use a beach scene and pelicans as she (and our family) have strong connections to the Narrunga/Kaurna coastline. Pelicans in particular held a strong spiritual connection for Kathryn. The flight of the pelican represents the children's journey through your centre; they come in young, they are nurtured, fed, taught and prepared for life (represented by the ocean waves) and then they fly off into the big wide world. This is overlaid by the journey of the sun across the sky representing time - the days, the weeks, the months that children spend in your care, learning and growing. We are all gateful for the fence and appreciate the significance around the artworks.

PROSPECT PRIMARY SCHOOL E- NEWSLETTER Issue 11 6 NEW STAFF MEMBERS (interviewed by BRANSON KHOO) This year 2018, Prospect Primary School is fortunate enough to welcome five new teachers to the school. Although all are from different places they all share the same objective, to help nurture the student s learning. Our New Greek teacher this year is called Simone. Her previous school that she taught was called Mark Oliphant, it is a high school and Simone taught music there. She has been teaching for 1 year and loves to play music. Outside of school she is part of a rock band and often plays concerts. The new teacher in room 2 is called Kylie Kurylowicz and has been teaching for 9 years. The previous school that she taught in was called Lakewindemere. She coaches calisthenics which is a form of dancing. She loves travelling and catching up on her favourite shows. Next door to room 2 is room 1 and the new teacher there is called Mike La Pietra. He is sporty and loves the beach. He has three kids and lives in the hills. The last school that he was teaching was Walkerville and he has been teaching for 32 years In room 18, there is Jess Clemente. She is a mum and likes running, she has been teaching for 8 years and taught in KICE Penneshaw which is Kangaroo Island. Outside of school she likes to go to the beach. Last but definitely not least is Deanna, she has taught in London for 3 and a half years and has been teaching for 8 years. The last school she taught in is called Grange Primary School and loves to travel and enjoys eating. These are all great and amazing teachers and hope that they will make Prospect Primary an even better school.

PROSPECT PRIMARY SCHOOL E- NEWSLETTER Issue 11 12 SPORTS My name is Don Bui. I have played badminton since the age of 8 and started playing seriously at 9 years of age. So far in my entire badminton life, I have achieved 37 badminton medals and 4 trophies. I have represented South Australia in the Under 13, 15 and 17 national tournaments. Earlier this year, I had a chance to compete in the Under 13 National Championships held in Melbourne. This year, the competition standards was good and everyone had high expectations. The tournament atmosphere was tense and exciting. I proceeded through the tournaments reaching the elimination rounds. I won all of them and reach the finals after competing some tough games. In the finals, I played an excellent opponent from WA and unfortunately lost narrowly. I had a great experience in Melbourne and I hope to achieve even higher in the future. Don Bui 1B
