Learning is at the core of our school. Exceptional students find their learning accomplishments are honored by membership in the National Honor Society. The activities of the society include the annual Campus Cruise, the Alumni Reception, and the Junior Senior Banquet. The English Department, headed by Miss Helen Estes, offers students courses ranging from grammar to great literature. Topics covered by the Social Studies Department, under the leadership of Mr. Louis Piper, include ancient and modern civilizations, as well as the study of world governments. Through extra-curricular activities such as the Current Affairs, Debc;iting, and International Relations clubs, students participate in field trips, debates, and discussions to gain a better understanding of the world they will enter as young adults. The language clubs in conjunction with the Language Department, headed by Mr. Michael Guadano, enrich the students' understanding of the cultures of France, Spain and Ancient Rome. Mathematics is fast becoming the language of the scientific age, and the M.H.S. Mathematics and Science departments, headed by Mr. Dwight Perry and Mr. Philip Emery, respectively, prepare students for careers in these fast growing fields. Truly, at M.H.S. the golden key to success is extended to those who will accept it.

The vocational teachers, headed by Mr. William Voders, offer students a wide range of subjects in the field of business and vocational arts. Typing, Business Machines, Drafting, Electric Shop, and many related courses are available to interested students. There are a number of clubs connected with vocational subjects open to high school students. The Rocket CIJ.Jb studies and builds functional rockets of many sizes and types. Students interested in constructing and repairing radios may join the Radio Club. Members of the Audio Visual Aids Club deliver and set up projectors, screens, and other instructiono 1 aids at the request of teachers. The Club is under the direction of Mr. Kenneth Skinner. The Photography Club attracts future photographers and interested hobbyists. Students ore prepared for future life at home by the Home Economics Deportment, headed by Mrs. Doris Pyne. Subjects ranging from Foods to Child Development are offered to interested students. The Future Nurses' Club gives students the opportunity to actively prepare for a rewording career of service. Girls interested in library science make up the Library Pages, headed by Mrs. Morion Monahan. Members of the M.H.S. Publications Stoff take orders for and distribute publications by the Somonhis Staff and the Fine Arts Magazine Stoff. The music department headed by Mr. Albert Pearson offers courses ranging from Choir to Music Appreciation. Students who excel vocally may become members of the Round Table Singers who perform for many organizations. Students interested in musical instruments make up the Band, Dance Band, Jazz Club and Orchestra. Creativity is encouraged by the art department under the leadership of Mrs. Elizabeth Budd. Artistically inclined students may study painting, sculpture and crofts. Members of "Sounds of M.H.S.," advised by Mr. David Monahan, produce a bi-weekly radio program heard over WINF. The Fine Arts Magazine, under the guidance of Miss Mary Lou Smith, publishes original material written by students. Mr. Jay Stager heads the Somanhis Staff which compiles the yearbook. The High School World Staff, under the guidance of Mrs. Joyce Don, compiles the school newspaper, which appears in the Manchester Evening Herald. Students interested in the theater make up the Sock 'n Buskin Drama Society, under the direction of Mrs. Carolyn Ehrman and Mr. Donald Thomas. Through these departments and clubs, students are given the freedom to express their individuality and creative talents. Allon Howes and the M.H.S. marching musicians.

Girls' field hockey team... "o swing and o miss." Through athletic competition, both intramural and interscholastic, students at Manchester High develop physically and emotionally in the ideals of fair play and sportsmanship. The Physical Education Deportment, headed by Miss Julia Cose, is responsible for the athletic growth of the students. Boys who ore especially active in athletics ore honored by membership in the Varsity "M" Club, under the guidance of Mr. Nicholas Costa., The leaders' Clubs give students the opportunity to display their leadership qualities in physical education classes. The many competitive sports at M.H.S. include: soccer, football, basketball, wrestling, cross country and track, rifle shooting, baseball, golf, tennis, and swimming. The chess team engages in a less physically strenuous type of competition. Students especially proficient in swimming skills make up the Aquaettes, under the guidance of Miss Mary Faignant. The Club presents an annual water ballet for the enjoyment of M.H.S. students and parents. The Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders lead M.H.S. students in cheering their competing teams on to victory. Through supervised athletic competition, students aim to achieve the goal of sportsmanship. Rick Ooley grasps the slippery pigskin.

Co-operation is a golden thread binding us together. The Student Council, a body of students elected by their fellow classmates co-operates with the school staff in sponsoring school-wide events, such as the various sports dances, sneaker hops, and assemblies. The Student Council Presidential Election, held in the spring, offers the students a time to participate in a school wide campaign and election. Among the 1963 candidates Dove Odell was elected president. Students not only co-operate within their community, but many hove the chance to co-operate with citizens from other ports of the world. This year at M.H.S. we hod four exchange students: Marius Beckers from Belgium, Dionne Brossington from England, Stephen Duschek from Austria, and Anders lundwoll from Sweden. Two of our own M.H.S. students hove also hod the opportunity to be exchange students. Holly Hooker, sponsored by the American Field Service, visited Turkey for the summer, 1963, and So lly Chopin, sponsored by the International Christion Youth Exchange, spent the entire year in Germany. Graduation signifies the closing door on a memorable high school career and the opening of another door to a world of opportunity. The Seniors of the class of 1964 hove worked long and hard for the memorable day of their graduation. They hove devoted their time and talents to the improvement of Manchester High School. Upon several hove fallen the heavy responsibilities of leadership, and they hove responded most cheerfully to the coll of service by their fellow classmates. Many of these graduating students hove been honored for their service to their school and their community, and still others for their outstanding creative and academic accomplishments. In June of 1964, 750 deserving seniors received their coveted diplomas signifying the closing curtain to the final act of a memorable performance. Groduotion will be o lifelong shadow in eoch one's memory.

REMEMBERING..,~. 4hrlKm'fii As we look back on our years at M anchester High, we shall remember many things: the everyday life - slamming lockers, crowded halls, the cafeteria, a sea of faces; the special events - "Oklahoma," the magnificent performance of the combined efforts of the Music Department and the Sock 'n Buskin Drama Society; the Prom sponsored by the Senior Girls' Club in the spring of 1963; the 1963 Junior Prom and Queen Julie, set on that famous avenue, Champs Elysees; the Varsity "M" Alumni Dance, Thanksgiving, 1963; and so many other wonderful events held at M.H.S. SOMAN HIS In choosing the theme for the 1964 Somonhis we wished to toke advantage of the unusua l effects that con be produced from various methods of printing. In order to odd variety and exemplify the creative talents of M.H.S. students, we chose the theme Textures and Panels. Throughout the book we hove sought to present the textures one comes into contact with every day - from the smooth surface of o desk, to the dusty powder of chalk, and the rough permanence of concrete walls. We hope that you will enjoy and "feel" the theme of this year's book. We would like to thank o few people without whom this book would not hove been possible. Holly Hooker 1n Turkey My American Field Service summer trip to Turkey was the most wonderful experience of my life. During my stay I become the third daughter in the home of Tohsin Ozcon, a deportment store owner in the port city of Mersin on the Mediterranean Seo. The rest of my Turkish family consists of my mother, Anne, my sisters, Neila, 18, and Neyron, 13, and my brother, Necdet, 16. Throughout my summer I was constantly impressed by the natural beauty of every port of Turkey, the extreme patriotism of the Turks, and their boundless hospitality. I can truthfully soy that every Turk I met seemed to wont and try to do everything possible to make my stay a more pleo~ont one. Their efforts were certointly very effective, because I literally "fell in love" with Turkey and am determined to go back there someday. My summer wouldn't hove been possible without the contributions mode to the American Field Service by students, teachers, and the people of Manchester. Please accept my deepest, most grateful thanks. Sally Chapin Germany 1n Solly Chopin of Manchester High School traveled to Germany in her junior year (1963-1964) under the auspices of the International Christion Youth Exchange. To prepare for her journey, Solly spent four months learning Germon at Vidil-Rock School of Languages, and ofter arriving in Germany, spent another month improving her proficiency in the language. In mid-august, Solly met her adopted family, the Kious-Jergen Schultzes, who wisked her off to summer vocation in Trento, Italy. Once bock in Germany, she began school and occasiona lly sow Harold Mueh lberger, foreign exchange student to M.H.S. two years ago. She bicycled up hills, across green countrysides, viewing always the Black Forest, the region in which she was staying. She sow the Gothic cathedral of Cologne, visited composers' homes, and at Christmas attended a candle-light service. In January she mode her home with Dr. and Mrs. Georg Kronberger of Kassel, a town only l 0 to 15 miles from East Germany. To Seek Reality Through Folk Songs. FOLK MUSIC CLUB The folk music club is one of M.H.S.'s newest orgonizotions. It wos formed because of student interest in folk music. It is on informal orgonizotion which meets twice o month in the Choral room. The club is advised and entertained by Mr. David Monohan and Mr. Lawrence Perry who ore ethnic folk enthusiasts. A typical meeting consists of individual performances accompanied by guitars and banjos and group singing where everyone tokes port.
