CONFERENCE WELCOME FROM Cambridge P.A.R.K. Cambridge P.A.R.K. is one of the 10 centres in the Czech Republic authorised by the University of Cambridge English Language Assessment Examinations to organise Cambridge English exams. Therefore, your students can take Cambridge English exams not only at the British Council, but also at Cambridge P.A.R.K. In our brief welcome speech we would like to introduce P.A.R.K. s teacher training programme, focussed on both exam preparation and general teacher training. Our exam centre would also like to thank all our partner schools and to invite other institutions to join our partnership network and take advantage of its benefits. In the summer of 2013 Cambridge P.A.R.K. started providing its services in the whole of the Czech Republic, and we are very happy to offer our partnership programmes to all quality schools in the country.

PLENARY SESSION: OPENING PLENARY NICK BILBROUGH Cambridge University Press LIVENING UP LISTENING! According to the Greek philosopher, Epictetus (55-135 AD) We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak. As far as second language development is concerned, the importance of listening, particularly at lower levels, cannot be overestimated. Regular opportunities to listen to English being used enables learners to notice how language works in context, increases vocabulary range and grammatical knowledge, and raises awareness about features of pronunciation in natural, connected speech. The more learners listen in class, the better they become at it, allowing them to make better use of the English they may hear outside of class. Traditionally, listening skills in the classroom means the use of pre-recorded material. This may involve some potentially dull and inauthentic moments. In this interactive talk, I'll challenge the superiority of this approach, and explore a range of motivating activities which use live listening material as the source of input instead. NICK BILBROUGH biodata: Nick Bilbrough has been involved in language teaching for over twenty years, and has taught in three continents in a wide range of interesting and challenging contexts. He has worked on training courses for language teachers in many parts of the world, and is a regular speaker at conferences worldwide. He is the author of two resource books in the Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers series: Dialogue Activities (2007) and Memory Activities for Language Learning (2011) He now runs Horizon Language Training in Totnes, Devon, UK specialising in short courses for language teachers from all over the world.

LIST OF SEMINARS / WORKSHOPS: SEMINAR 1 DAVE CLEARY Oxford University Press HOW DO YOU EAT AN ELEPHANT? Good question - just how exactly do you eat an elephant? In this session we will use some classroom activities in an attempt to answer this questions as we discuss motivation, success and progress. We'll look at these three essential aspects of the language classroom - aspects which are both difficult to define and achieve. And we'll consider the question of whether, when we talk about learning a language (the elephant), it is ever possible to keep students motivated minute-by-minute, lesson-by-lesson and year-by-year. 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40 SEMINAR 2 SABINA PAZDEROVÁ Oxford University Press FRUSTRATION OF THE INTERMEDIATE PLATEAU Learners often face problems when they move from the intermediate to the upperintermediate level. Most of them have reached a plateau in their language learning feeling they are not making any progress. In this workshop we will explore some of the features of the plateau effect and suggest strategies to help learners overcome this problem. English File Intermediate Plus is an optional level which allows learners to consolidate, activate and expand what they have previously studied but don t use. Times: 1 st Afternoon session 1.40-2.40 2 nd Afternoon session 3.00-4.00 SEMINAR 3 HANA BABINCOVÁ P.A.R.K. for Pearson 'CAUSE WE ARE LIVING IN A DIGITAL WORLD... The children of today feel comfortable in the digital world and gaming is a natural part of their lives. Why not make it a natural part of their language learning? Interactive games can be used as a language learning tool both inside and outside the classroom. They provide learners with an opportunity to learn English by doing and they make it easier for teachers to motivate, energize and engage their learners. Do your pupils wait for the break? Forget about that! They ll want to finish playing first. 2 nd Afternoon session 3.00 4.00

SEMINAR 4 - DAVID KOSTER P.A.R.K. for Pearson ENGLISH FOR WORK, SOCIALISING AND TRAVEL Are you teaching a course that focuses on English for work, socialising and travel? Do you need to help learners interact effectively in and outside the work environment? Come to this workshop for tips and practical activities based on the Lifestyle series. At the end of the session, you can win a complete set of Lifestyle. Times: 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40 1 st Afternoon session 1.40-2.40 SEMINAR 5 RADKA MALÁ Pearson VIDEO IN OUR CLASSES = REAL LIFE, FUN AND MOTIVATION We always try to make our lessons attractive and meaningful. And with 21st-century technologies to bring the real world into the classroom. Real BBC videos in Speakout and teenager videos in Gold Experience capture students attention and naturally present reallife situations. In the seminar we will explore how we can use the videos most effectively and develop them into fun and motivating lessons. 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40 SEMINAR 6 MICHAELA SOBOTKOVÁ Freelance TEFL Trainer TALKING VIDEO Have you noticed how everyone loves watching short video clips on the Internet? Let s take something our students love and turn it into a conversation lesson! This session will show you how to create a conversation lesson, which is fun and effective at the same time, using a short video clip. Times: 1 st Afternoon session 1.40-2.40 2 nd Afternoon session 3.00-4.00 SEMINAR 7 JANA ČADOVÁ Cambridge University Press ENERGY PACKED FOR YOUR TEACHING JOURNEY In this seminar you will get acquainted with a seven-level course which gives children a confident start to learning English, and makes lessons a joy for teachers and pupils. Perfect for general use, Kid's Box also fully covers the syllabus of the Cambridge Young Learners

English (YLE) tests and provides sensitive input into CLIL approach. New language is presented through amusing stories that your students will adore and, practised with fantastic songs and activities, make the learning process a delight. Key language is continuously revised and recycled, helping to build children's confidence, and a focus on communicative activities ensures that children use the language they have learned in a fun, 'no-pressure' context. Friendly to teachers, Kid s Box brings plenty of photocopiable materials to reinforce and extend pupils skills, as well as strong digital support. SEMINAR 8 NICK BILBROUGH Cambridge University Press TASK REPETITION REVISITED Task repetition has long been recognized (eg Lewis 1997, Thornbury 2001) as an effective way to encourage learners to produce more accurate, more complex, and more fluent language. But, as teachers how can we incorporate repetition into our classes whilst maintaining the same level of engagement and motivation. In this practical workshop we'll explore this issue and try out a range of activities which are immediately usable for language classes at a range of levels. Times: 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40 SEMINAR 9 NICK BILBROUGH Cambridge University Press IN OUR OWN WRITE The idea of scaffolding is normally applied to spoken language development but, in the same way that speech may be enhanced by the participation of a more capable peer, so too may written work. In this highly practical workshop we ll explore four learner and learningcentered ways of organizing writing in the classroom, where short texts, that are coconstructed between learners and teacher, serve as memorable records for reinforcing and reviewing emergent language. Times: 1 st Afternoon session 1.40-2.40 SEMINAR 10 JANA ČADOVÁ Cambridge University Press WHAT SHOULD YOU TEACH - YOUR LEARNERS, YOUR SUBJECT OR YOUR BOOK? Teaching staff has never been easy even at the best of times. It is even harder when there are a lot of possibilities to be chosen. In this workshop we will observe our lessons to see what is really motivating for our learners and how we can exploit their learning capacity effectively to help them use English in real life and their further study. Hopefully we identify some useful strategies to balance our teaching and help our learners to profit from their

self-reflection, from the subject and also from the course book. Be prepared to share, reflect and examine your own practice as well as to gain some tips of a good practice. There will be some useful examples from the course book, MORE! The 2nd Edition based on CLIL features will appear, too. Times: 2 nd Afternoon session 3.00 4.00 SEMINAR 11 HANA ŠVECOVÁ Oxford University Press ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES Environmental education is an essential tool of learning about the world around us. The workshop aims to integrate topics from environmental education and language learning, and emphasize the value of teaching across the curriculum and creative methods of learning. It presents material that comes from the author s collaboration with Sluňákov, the Olomouc Centre for Ecological Activities, and resource books available on this topic. The activities presented not only assist language learning, but they also inspire cooperation between students and their creativity in discovering nature. 2 nd Afternoon session 3.00 4.00 SEMINAR 12 ŠÁRKA DOHNALOVÁ Oxford University Press TEXT AND DRAMA - ACTING OUR WAY THROUGH LITERATURE It is said that the only thing reading can take from you is your ignorance. The problem is how to make pupils to start reading, and by reading I mean real reading, not mere looking at several words under a picture. This is even more difficult if the pupil is fighting a specific learning disorder and reading means an extra load. Multisensory structured drama (MSSD) is a complex method using techniques and conventions of drama in education, which have specific targets and use various skills, not only the language ones. It might seem difficult, however, these are simple and easy to use activities in the meaningful context of a literary piece adapted for language pupils. You will get a practical guide that you will be able to use in your classroom. Times: 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40 1 st Afternoon session 1.40-2.40 SEMINAR 13 NIKKI FOŘTOVÁ Oxford University Press SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW... The new school year dawns and summer becomes a distant memory. As I walk into the classroom to meet my new learners one thing becomes painfully clear - I need industrial

strength face rejuvenation cream. How can it be that I'm clearly getting older yet my learners seem to be getting younger? Suddenly I'm filled with insecurity. What if my foolproof, much loved, tried and tested activities just won't cut it with a class full of "smart" learners? Does this mean that I have to completely renew the repertoire of activities I've had up my sleeve for years? In this practical workshop we'll explore the "old" activities and then look at how we can use modern technology to make them "new". Something old, something new, but hopefully something for everyone. 2 nd Afternoon session 3.00 4.00 SEMINAR 14 JAMES PAGLIARO Cambridge P.A.R.K. HELPING LEARNERS WITH SPELLING It s unsurprising that learners of English find spelling words in the language problematic: natives and proficient users do too. Now alhtouhg our branes can deel wiht misspetl werds and still derive meaning, misspellings are distracting and affect our assumptions of the proficiency and, dare I say it, the intelligence of the writer. Furthermore, it s the number one reason for lost marks in Cambridge exams fact! So let s tackle what is often overlooked in the ELT classroom spelling. This session is highly practical and will help you take the boredom out of practising spelling. One day, your students might just fank u 4 it. Times: 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40 1 st Afternoon session 1.40-2.40 SEMINAR 15 DENISA PETRILÁKOVÁ Freelance Consultant, Trainer and Teacher WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN "TO LEARN A WORD"? In particularly we will look at (i) how to get the cognitive mechanisms used for recognition of pattern written or spoken word forms, as well as of mechanisms for production of spoken or written foreign language and how to involve implicit learning processes. Then we will look at (ii) how to get the lexical representations, and we will observe learning as affected by frequency, recency, and context of exposure. In contrast we will focus on (iii) acquisition of word meanings which needs explicit learning processes; (iv) deep processing strategies and (v) how the order of introduction of new vocabulary and the subsequent distribution of practice and testing can have profound effects on learning and memory. This is all relevant for language acquisition and if you are wondering what some of these words mean and why they matter, come and get involved in our discussion with practical activities. 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40

SEMINAR 16 LOUEL ROSS CALLEJA P.A.R.K. School of English THE NON-NATIVE EFL TEACHER AND THE ADVANCED CONVERSATION COURSE: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES There s a compelling case to be made for having a non-native teacher lead advanced conversation courses (after all, most communication in English nowadays takes place between non-native speakers), yet many Czech teachers feel some misgivings about their own abilities: What if my students ask me about words I don t know? Will I be able to sustain a freewheeling discussion of Greek mythology with a university professor, let alone teach him the specialized lexis he needs? I'll be sharing with you a couple of ideas which just might help you pull it off. Times: 1 st Afternoon session 1.40-2.40 2 nd Afternoon session 3.00-4.00 SEMINAR 17 TERRY PROSSER Cambridge University Press JOINED UP SPEAKING AND LISTENING - TEACHING CONVERSATIONAL STRATEGIES AND CONNECTED SPEECH TO INCREASE FLUENCY We often talk about 'fluency' but it is often difficult to describe. Although students can speak quickly at times, their interaction is not always that fluent. In this session, we'll look at a series of conversational strategies that help improve their ability to initiate turn taking, use interactive phrases, take part in cooperative conversations, and skilfully use lexical chunks. We'll also show how the inclusion of connected speech activities helps students to understand natural speech and interact more fluently. SEMINAR 18 TEREZA JANÍČKOVÁ P.A.R.K. School of English BORED PUPILS? NOT IN MY (AND YOUR) CLASSROOM! Due to popular demand, this is a re-run of my seminar session from spring, including some new activities thrown in for good measure. Do your pupils want more interactive and dynamic lessons? Do they like to compete and have fun in their classroom? Are they tired of routine grammar exercises? Do you want your lessons to be more communicative and practical? Do you want to be able to measure your pupils progress easily? Do you want to be sure your pupils are good at all four language skills? Did you know that when you prepare your pupils for Cambridge YLE exams, you are able to achieve all these things? Come and find out how easily and effectively this can be done through the practical activities you will try out in this seminar. Times: 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40

2 nd Afternoon session 3.00 4.00 SEMINAR 19 TERRY PROSSER Cambridge University Press AN INTERACTIVE JOURNEY - USING GAMES AND MULTIMEDIA WITH YOUNG LEARNERS This presentation looks at ways of using games and multimedia to create an affective and enjoyable learning environment for young learners of English. It also identifies important aspects of EYL and is accompanied by sections of the Kid's Box interactive DVD and classware content from Cambridge University Press. Times: 1 st Afternoon session 1.40-2.40 SEMINAR 20 TERRY PROSSER Cambridge University Press COMPLETE CONTROL - PREPARING STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS AT FCE The talk highlights key features of exam preparation such as the balance of exam techniques with communicative activities that increase personalisation, motivation and confidence. Times: 2 nd Afternoon session 3.00 4.00 SEMINAR 21 PHIL WARWICK Pearson MOVING ON UP We all know that passing the Maturita exam is a huge stage in the academic development of our students, and like any transition it can appear daunting to them as the exam gets closer. We need to provide them with the right set of skills to tackle the specific tasks that they are going to face. Sometimes just knowing what is tested and focusing on the weaker areas like Reading and Linguistic meaning, in a fun and exciting way, can make all the difference. Using Next Move, a new course from Pearson, this session will aim to give teachers all the necessary tools to ensure that this transition goes as smoothly as possible. Harnessing those traditional activities that we all know work in the classroom with a fresh approach to tackling the skills that students struggle with, or just find boring, we'll look at some exam strategies for the new Maturita that can help move your students on to success. 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40

SEMINAR 22 MARTINA PAVLÍČKOVÁ Freelance TEFL Teacher TEACHING IN THE 21 ST CENTURY Storify, Fotobabble, Padle, Fotor Keep reading even if you are a technophobe and have no idea what language I m speaking! We ll explore some simple free webtools 2.0 which will engage your students and make learning much more fun. Come and see how to help your students improve their productive skills. We ll also learn how to start a class blog in 3 minutes and see what benefits it has. Times: 1 st Afternoon session 1.40-2.40 SEMINAR 23 EVA PUNČOCHÁŘOVÁ P.A.R.K. School of English SPEAKING CZECH IN ENGLISH CLASSES IS BAD. BUT IS IT REALLY? Were you told in your teacher training lessons that you should only speak English and never use Czech? Has it always worked for you? Or are you beginning to see flaws in this theory? In this seminar we ll explore reasons why students speak Czech and if speaking L1 might be justifiable in some situations. We ll also discuss whether or not a judicious use of L1 by the teacher is acceptable. 2 nd Morning session 11.40-12.40
