From he Presiden s Desk...Roger Whiaker Looking Back, Looking Ahead in 2014 Individually and as an organizaion, he sar of he New Year usually inspires us o gaher our houghs on wha has been accomplished in he previous year and wha we hope o see happen ahead. The passing year has been good o us as an organizaion. Our programs have been packed, our speakers specacular, our finances solid, and our membership growing. Sill, ha gives us no cause o si back. The monhs ahead will provide new challenges and have no gone unnoiced by your board and officers. We sill have a lo of work o do in he area of membership, educaion, program developmen, parnerships, fundraising and more. We have been especially buoyed by he ineres in our Special Projecs Fund. For he commiee, which oversees he gran process ha goes wih awarding up o $3,000 a year, i has been a learning process coupled wih ough decision making. They are learning ha i isn easy giving money away. In fac, i is very difficul o decide beween a lo of very meriorious ideas for which a small amoun of funding can bring big resuls. The process is helping shape Sociey policy in erms of he ypes of projecs ha make sense o fund, given he limied amoun of money we have o work wih. I has also promped a discussion sure o coninue over coming weeks on reaching ou o our members and beyond o build up and susain he Special Projecs Fund so ha he monies raised nearly wo years ago for his purpose in honor of he Sociey s 50h anniversary, will no evaporae in he fuure. The mail campaign ha raised funds for Special Projecs was he firs of is kind in he hisory of he organizaion. The success wih which is proceeds have been used is esamen o how small grans can make a big difference in building communiy undersanding of local hisory. Special hanks go ou o Donna Calin, David and Virginia Sco and New Yorkers Meg and Bob Gary who in recen monhs have made individual and significan donaions o he Sociey s Special Projecs Fund. If a special campaign maerializes his spring wih ha Fund in mind, we hope you will consider joining heir lead in supporing wha we hink will become a major source of imporan funding for Sangamon Couny hisory organizaions and individual projecs in he fuure. * * * We hope you will join us on February 2 a he Hoogland Cener for Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Abe Lincoln.
