September 19, 2005 Dear Colleagues: Welcome to the University of South Carolina s Deans Report of Sponsored Awards Activity for Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2005. During this period, our faculty attracted $166.2 million in funding from external sponsors in support of a variety of research, public service, and training projects. This 11 percent increase over last year s total demonstrates how our Centers of Economic Excellence, research campus, and faculty recruitment initiatives are converging to provide critical mass to our world-class research programs spanning the physical and health sciences, the humanities, nanotechnology, and energy alternatives. As USC faculty, staff, and students continue to excel in these areas, they are concurrently increasing the quality of life our citizens enjoy and growing our state s business economy. With this report, we also continue our simplified format and completely electronic distribution that have proven so convenient for faculty and staff as indicated by your use of the SAM (Sponsored Awards Management) webpage and USCeRA, our web-based one-stop shop for faculty proposal submissions, grant-related expenditure monitoring, and identification of potential collaborators or projects of interest. Look for more USCeRA enhancements shortly, including a faculty publications module that will also include biographical data, and a notification feature for early warnings of sponsor reporting requirements. As always, if you have any questions or comments on this report or our other initiatives related to identifying and obtaining funding for research and other sponsored projects from government and private sources, please contact the Sponsored Awards Management office at 777-7093. Sincerely, Harris Pastides Vice President for Research and Health Sciences
