HUNDREDS OF OPTIONS FOR A THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE Savonia University of Applied Sciences is one of Finland s biggest and most versatile universities of applied sciences. An extensive selection of curricula and many options enable students to organize their studies according to their situations in life. Savonia offers degrees both for full-time students and via blended learning, for students already in the working life. Parts of the degree can also be studied flexibly at the Open University of Applied Sciences. There are almost 30 Bachelor degree programmes, several adult education degree programmes and nine Master degree programmes. In addition, Savonia offers specialized studies in many different fields yearly. Our campuses are situated in Kuopio, Iisalmi and Varkaus. There are 6000 students and 600 employees at Savonia. Our annual budget is around 60 million euros. Values Communality with respect to individuality Savonia s graduates are individual future professionals and developers with cooperative skills. The communal activities of our staff and students are based on mutual trust and genuine interaction. Responsible productivity As responsible players, we operate productively. RECOGNISED QUALITY Savonia has from the very beginning of its foundation devoted itself to quality. This devotion has also produced results. The Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council has rewarded Savonia University of Applied Sciences three times with the title of centre of excellence. In addition, Savonia has been rewarded twice by the Finnish Entrepreneurship and Innovation Network for Higher Education. Quality and the concern for quality are the responsibility of all at Savonia. All of the functions and employees of Savonia are committed to high quality work. Quality assurance is a priority for the whole organization - it is a common objective and part of the working culture. Quality control is based on Savonia s comprehensive perspectives of quality management. NATIONAL ATTENTION Savonia UAS was the first finnish education organization, that was acknowledged two times in the Finnish Quality Award competition with the prestigious Recognized for Excellence recognition: for Health Care in 2010 and the whole Savonia in 2011.

LEARNING From THE PartnerSHIP BETWEEN WORKING LIFE AND STUDYING FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE Savonia has put much effort into developing ways to connect working life with studies and education. Studies in Savonia have been renewed with Open Innovation Space (OIS). In this learning approach we combine learning, development, research, and teaching. Working life oriented learning requires close and versatile collaboration between Savonia and our regional partners. The OIS learning benefits both students and companies. Every year Savonia implements a number of projects in co-operation with working life. One example is the designing of an exposition consept for Hydroline Oy. The project was part of the studies and the company was closely involved in it s implementation. For companies the OIS way of thinking offers a partnership in which students and teachers together with representatives of the company work on different types of assignments as part of the studying. In addition, students work on projects and theses commissioned by companies. Internship which belongs to the studies is also carried out as an authentic working environment as possible, in the company. Our organization of experts educates strong professionals in six different fields of study: Culture Business Natural Resources Tourism and Catering Engineering Social Services and Health Care

APPLIED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WORK Savonia actively serves the working life in the region. Our research, development and innovation work (RDI) offers expertise and tailor-made problem-solving to enterprises and public organizations. Our key success factors are collaboration, networking and international perspective. Savonia s operating policy focus on the selected priority areas: Agriculture and food Energy, environment and safety Integrated product development User-oriented services in health and well-being Priority areas cutting-edge know-how The knowledge in Savonia s priority areas intensifies to chosen products and services. In the priority area Agriculture and food Savonia has made convincing work in Kosovo where our experts were creating new operation models for agricultural development. Our experts connect the region with relevant research and development networks. Most RDI projects respond to practical research and development needs of companies and organizations. The results benefit the working communities as well as learning and teaching at Savonia. Most of the RDI projects are closely related to the practical development and research of companies or work communities, as well as the education and studies in Savonia.

International partnerships provide opportunities like double degrees or international projects

Savonia works for embedding international activities and expertise into the regional business and services. Savonia has active student exchange partners in 30 countries. Active student and expert exchange is usual to a university of applied sciences, as well as working in co-operation with international universities. Our degree programmes taught in English receive students from no less than 20 countries. partners around the world Co-operation with Savonia s partner school s is versatile and multiform. In some countries there are several partners. A Savonia student can also do a double degree in a selected partner institute of higher education abroad. For example in Tourism and Hospitality, our student can complete an international double degree at Brussels Business Institute for Higher Education and can acquaint himself/herself with the network of a worldwide chain of hotels. In addition Savonia has a double degree agreement relative to Environmental Technology with the German Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences. Savonia s international co-operation extends to the Nordic and EU countries, as well as to Russia, Asia, the USA and Africa. We are involded in several international studying development project like ERASMUS+ programme. Savonia implements applied research and development work in several international research projects. active affiliate network Savonia works in active co-operation with several education and development organizations as well as networks. In addition Savonia implements agreement-based partnership with several organisations both regional and national. Savonia operates in strategic partnership with University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences and works with an agreement-based co-operation with the regional Vocational Colleges. For the years 2013 2016 Savonia has made a new partnership with the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences.

Savonia s campuses The three campus towns of Savonia are Kuopio, Iisalmi and Varkaus. The students concentrate their studies to one campus. Movement of staff between campuses and towns is flexible thanks to good transport connections. Savonia headquarters are in the Microkatu Campus in Kuopio, where the majority of Savonia s Kuopio offices relocates by the year 2015. The new facilities are build with students conditions. The facilities enable a whole new way of working in co-operation between different fields of studies and experts.
