I wish all of our Hortonville families a new year that is safe, healthy and filled with hope and promise. I hope that everyone had the time to relax and rejuvenate for the second half of the school year. Jan 24 th -No School Jan 25 th - No School Feb 13 th - Early Release Feb 16 th - Winter Homecoming 7:30pm-11:30pm Feb 20 th - Grade 11 ACT Writing Test Feb 21 st - Grade 11 ACT WorkKeys Test Feb 19 th & 21 st - Parent/Teacher Conferences 4pm-7pm Feb 22 nd - Parent/Teacher Conferences 8am-11:30am As I reflect on the past semester, I feel fortunate to have witnessed and be part of some great experiences for our students. In fall, we all experienced an event-filled Homecoming Week which saw every student being respectful of the Polar Bear Community and also demonstrating their Red and White pride. We also inducted 80 outstanding members into our National Honor Society. Each of these individuals exceeds not only in the classroom but in our community as well. To wrap up the fall at Hortonville, who could forget our High School Musical performance of Annie which highlighted a plethora of acting and singing talent within the student body. January marks the beginning of preparation for the 2019-2020 school year. Course registration for next year will conclude on January 4 th for current 9 th, 10 th, and 11 th grade students. Registration begins the process where students start making choices that will positively benefit their learning as they work toward becoming college and career ready. I am proud of all the career paths and courses that are offered to all students so that they can individualize their instruction and course selection to best meet their needs next year and beyond high school. Students can also personalize their learning through opportunities available to them with Advanced Placement (AP) courses, Early College Credit Program (ECCP), and CAPP courses and also through the Youth Apprentice Program. Participation in these courses and programs can save students money and even help them make money while at Hortonville High School. As we close the book on another calendar year, the month of January brings the need for hard work and preparation for not only the completion of the first semester but also the beginning of semester two. Please know that this hard work is the responsibility of all of us teachers, students, staff, families, and administrators. With each of us working together, I am confident that we can make this an exciting venue for the second half of the year. Yours in Education, Thomas J. Ellenbecker 1

A message from the health office: Illness and Communicable Diseases Is Your Child Well Enough To Go To School? It is not always easy to decide if your child is sick enough to stay home or well enough to be in school. Children who come to school are expected, with few exception, to participate fully in school activities. Here are some guidelines that might help in a parent s decision-making: 1. Fever: A fever of 100 degrees or more signals an illness that is probably going to make a student uncomfortable and unable to function well in class. Your child is to stay home until his or her temperature is less than 100 degrees for 24 hours and he/she is feeling better. 2. Vomiting, Diarrhea or Severe Nausea: These are symptoms that require a student to remain at home until a normal diet is tolerated the night before and the morning of school. 3. Infectious Diseases: Diseases such as impetigo, pink eye with thick drainage, and strep throat require a health care provider s visits and prescription for medication. Contacting the health care provider and using the medicine as directed for the full recommended length of time are necessary. A student may return to school 24 hours after the first dose of an antibiotic and if he/she is feeling well. The Hortonville Area School District refers to the: Wisconsin Childhood Communicable Disease Guidelines and per school board policy. 4. Rashes: Rashes or patches of broken, itchy skin need to be examined by a health care provider if they appear to be spreading or not improving. 5. Injuries: If a student has an injury that causes continuous discomfort, the student should not attend school until the condition is checked by a health care provider or it improves. Injuries that interfere with class participation need a medical evaluation. If participation in physical education classes is not recommended, a health care provider s excuse is required. 6
