Our Classroom Yellow Pages Mrs. Miller s Class 3rd Grade Sawgrass Bay Elementary 2017 2018

Absences Any absence will require a note of excuse from the parent. The note can either be written in the agenda or sent in on a separate sheet of paper. Absences are excused for the reasons stated in the Student Code of Conduct. If a student does not bring a note or is absent for a reason other than those stated in the Student Code of Conduct, the absence will be unexcused and the student will not be able to make-up missed assignments. Pre-arranged absences no more than 5 days per year. Parents must submit request 2 weeks in advance for Principal s approval. Agenda The agenda is a very important tool to improve communication between the school and home. If there are any comments and/or questions, parents can write a note to the teacher in the agenda. Longer notes can be attached to the agenda. At the front of the agenda is our monthly calendars to see upcoming events at the school. AR Reading Superstars Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading enrichment program. Students check out designated AR books from the library. Once they have read the book, they will take a comprehension test on the computer. Students earn points for passing these comprehension tests. Students will receive Brag Tags and prizes when they have earned certain amounts of points. Binder Each student has a binder where they keep their agendas. Students will also bring home notes and activities we have done in class, as well as any important papers and homework. Birthdays Birthday treats will only be distributed during lunch in the cafeteria. Families are required to bring the paper goods (plates, napkins, forks, etc.) The cafeteria cannot supply these items. Treats must be store bought and I recommend the small cupcakes. Our lunchtime is from 11:40-12:10. Book It! Book It! is a reading incentive program sponsored by Pizza Hut. The program starts October 1, 2017 and ends March 31, 2018. Students will earn their certificate if they complete their monthly reading log. Students that complete it will be rewarded with a certificate from Pizza Hut for a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza. More information to come. Box Tops for Education Our school collects Box Tops for Education coupons to raise money for classroom materials and supplies. These coupons can be found on many different products. Students will receive a Box Top Collection Sheet. The Box Tops can be taped or glued to the collection sheet. As soon as you have collected 10, you can send the sheet back to school and your child will receive another one. *REMINDER: The expiration date must be seen on the Box Top. Any Box Top that is expired or does not have an expiration date will not be counted. Classroom Infraction Form This form is used to document a recurring classroom behavior incident. The student will be given a warning and re-taught the expectation and specific rule concerning the infraction prior to recording it on this form. This is not a referral. However, continuation of this behavior may result in an office discipline referral.

Classroom Newsletter Our Classroom Newsletter will be emailed out on Fridays for the following week, as well as upload to our class webpage. The Classroom Newsletter includes information about upcoming events, what is being learned in the classroom the upcoming week, and special announcements. Please make sure to read these newsletters so you know what is going on in the life of our classroom. Conferences Here at Sawgrass Bay, communication between home and school is very important to us. I will be setting up conferences after the 1 st and 3 rd nine weeks report cards. This will give us a chance to go over report card and testing data. I will send home a conference sign up form with your child. Please choose a time that would be most convenient for you. We will also hold student led conferences in October where students will lead the conference. Covey Habits Habit 1- Be Proactive Habit 2- Put First Things First Habit 3- Begin with the End in Mind Habit 4- Think Win-Win Habit 5- Seek First to Understand, then to Be Understood Habit 6- Synergize Habit 7- Sharpen the Saw Dismissal If there is a change in the way a student is to go home, you must write a note in the agenda or call the office by 2:00 p.m. If I do not receive a note or email, your student will go home their usual way. There is no student pick up after 2:15 p.m. on regular days and 1:15p.m. on Wednesdays. If you need to pick up your child between 11:40-12:30, please let me know so I can have them take their backpacks with them to lunch and recess. Dress Code Top: students are expected to wear light blue, navy, white, red, or pink shirts/blouses with a collar turtleneck pull over, or polo-type shirts. School t-shirts may be worn as well. School sponsored t-shirts (Club, Covey Kid, etc.) may only be worn on Fridays. Pants/Shorts/skirts/jumpers: Student are expected to wear khaki or navy pants, skirts, shorts, or jumpers. Belts are recommended, but not required. Skirts, skorts, shorts, or jumpers must be no shorter than mid-thigh. Girls are allowed to wear shorts under skirts or jumpers. Jeans may be worn on Friday s only. Shoes: closed shoes, sneakers with socks, or closed toe sandals with back strap must be worn on campus. Please see School Dress Code Policy in agenda for further explanation. Email One of the easiest forms of communication I use in the classroom to communicate with you is to send you an email. Classroom newsletter will be emailed on Fridays. If your email changes, please let me know so that I can make sure to include you in all our weekly emails. Fun Friday Students that demonstrate good behavior throughout the week and return their weekly homework are rewarded with Fun Friday activities that are held during the last 30 minutes of the day. These activities vary from week to week. Some examples are: arts & crafts, computers, games, puzzles, etc.

Grades: Students will receive grades in Reading, Language Arts, Math, and Science. All graded assignments, quizzes, and tests are all worth 100% of their grade. The grading scale is 100% - 90% A 89% - 80% B 79% - 70% C 69% - 60% D 59% and below F Homework Homework is given on Mondays and is to be returned on Fridays. The purpose of homework is to provide students with practice in the reading and math standards. It also helps parents see what they are learning, and how they are doing in Reading and Math. Leader of the Month I will be choosing one student per month who is consistently displaying one of the Covey Habits. A note will be sent home prior to let you know if your child has been chosen. Leadership Binders We will use leadership binders this year to track our goals. Students will use these binders to share information with you during our conferences. Library Books Students will get to check out a book from the library during Week 1 and 3 of our enrichment schedule. The books may be taken home each night and they should be returned to class each day so that they can be used during our independent reading time. Lucky by Scholastic Our class participates in the Scholastic Book Club. A flyer will be sent home each month with reasonably priced books that are written especially for 3 rd grade students. Participation in this book club is strictly voluntary. Lunch Our scheduled time for lunch is 11:40 a.m. 12:10 p.m. Monday Take Home Folder Students graded papers will be sent home each Monday in a blue Take Home Folder. Please sign the log, remove papers, and return to school the next day. P.E. Please make sure that your child is dressed comfortably and wears appropriate shoes for running outside. We go to PE on Mondays and Thursdays. P.E. with Teacher Each day between reading and math, we will have PE with Teacher for 15 minutes each day. We will play games, dance, and exercise during this time.

Recess We will go out for recess everyday unless weather prohibits us. In that case, we will have recess indoors. Students may bring a football, soccer ball, kickball, Frisbee, etc. however they are required to share it as well as be responsible to take it to and from the field. Remind I will be using the Remind APP or text messaging service to send out reminders and share pictures throughout the year. Please let me know if you need help signing up. Rubrics We will sometimes use a rubric as a tool to evaluate student s work on various assignments. These rubrics are created to assess a student s performance and their ability to master and apply skills that have been taught. Students are told what is expected before each assignment is given. Skyward You can sign onto Skyward to check on your students grades. A note will be sent home soon to sign up for this access. www.lake.k12.fl.us/familyaccess Snack Students may bring in a healthy snack each day to be eaten during dismissal time. This may include crackers, goldfish, fruit, pretzels, etc. Students are allowed to have WATER only, spills happen and water is the easiest to clean up. This snack should be able to be eaten quickly and easily be opened by the students. Volunteers Please see Mrs. Block in the office to get information about becoming a volunteer. Webpage Upcoming events, newsletters, and other resources can be found on our class webpage. It is updated weekly. https://www.lake.k12.fl.us/site/default.aspx?pageid=28696
