CHECKENDON C.E. SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 26 th April 2018 THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them. On Wednesday, children in Owl Class took part in the Key Stage One Music Festival with Julia Donaldson. Along with nine other schools from the Oxfordshire area they performed six of Julia s songs, accompanied by a live band and Julia s husband Malcolm on guitar. There was even a surprise visit by the Gruffalo himself! The children have worked exceptionally hard over the past week to learn the lyrics to the songs. On the day they sang with enthusiasm and performed brilliantly, despite the very hot stage lights! Owl Class parents, please join us next Monday at 3pm where the children will sing some of the songs in their classroom.

At school this week Well done everyone 100% school attendance on Wednesday and Thursday! Whole School Worship Term 5 Value: Justice (please see the separate attachment for more information on what you could do at home to accompany our work within school on this value) Annual Bluebell Walk We all enjoyed our wonderful annual walk through the local countryside today. Many thanks to Checkendon Equestrian Centre for access to their grounds and to Mr Elliott for his help managing our crossing of the field

of horses. On returning to school the children enjoyed their ice lollies kindly donated by the School Association. Thank you to everyone who supported the event. Official Playtower Opening Just before starting our bluebell walk Jenson opened our wonderful new playtower. We are very grateful to Mrs Hood-Cree for taking on the role of organising the second phase and thank you so much to everyone who helped fundraise. The children love it! African Jungle Drama Workshop On Monday, children in Owlet and Owl Classes enjoyed singing and dancing in African Jungle drama workshops provided by Perform. Class Highlights The big news this week in Owlet class is that we have eggs in the incubator! Mo, whom we met at Paddock Farm has very kindly set us up with all the equipment and guidance we need. We are currently on day 3 and expecting some chicks on day 21. Fingers crossed! There are lots of things for us to do at various points over the next 3 weeks, such as candling the eggs and having weigh ins for them. We will be doing lots of learning based around the eggs, and have already started our egg diary and numbered and weighed the eggs. Children

in Panda Class have really enjoyed reading The Iron Man and, this week, designed and made their junk modelling sculptures. They worked carefully improving their designs in their sketchbooks before constructing their models. Certificates of excellence were presented to pupils who worked effectively in their teams. There will be an exhibition of the finished sculptures in the hall tomorrow after school. Do come along. Children in Rhino Class have started their new learning project about the USA by researching native Indians and the early settlers. Cutting Down on Plastics We hope you will support the school s commitment to do our bit by avoiding non-recyclable plastics in children s breaktime snacks. From Monday 30th April, children will not be allowed breaktime snacks with non-recyclable plastic wrappers. Thank you for your support. Parents Coffee Morning parents are invited to a parent led coffee morning being held in school on the 11 th May. A nice opportunity for parents, across all years, to simply say hi, catch up and eat cake, even if just for 5 minutes; it would be great to see you. Extra-Curricular Clubs Booking forms were sent out earlier this week for a Sculpture Project after school club taking place this term as part of Goring Gap Festival 2018. If your child is interested please complete the booking form and return to the school office. Unfortunately as only 8 children have signed up for the football club, the club has been cancelled this term. Ipro Football need 10 children for it to run. If you were thinking of signing up please let the office know asap so the club can go ahead. Year 6 Pupil Scholarship Congratulations to Jake in Year 6 who has gained an Round Thomas Scholarship to attend The Oratory School.
