WELCOME On behalf of the NSW MacKillop area it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to competitors, officials, families and spectators to the New South Wales Catholic Primary Schools CPS MacKillop Softball trial. I congratulate each participant on gaining selection in their Diocesan teams and trust each of you will gain from your involvement at this trial. I would also like to acknowledge the team managers and teachers who have played a major role in team coordination from selections and no doubt for their valuable support over the duration of these trials. Your role is tremendously important and certainly valued in school sport. I would like to thank the Sydney Archdiocese for hosting this event, in particular Anna Turnbull & Liz Reakes in preparation for these trials and we appreciate the efforts in providing these great sporting experiences. My thanks also to our trial umpires, selectors and the MacKillop team managers for the coordination of team selections. The NSWCPS MacKillop Softball trial provides a wonderful opportunity for Catholic Primary School students from across southern New South Wales to compete in a healthy spirit and will provide many valuable learning experiences. To those students fortunate enough to gain selection in a MacKillop team to compete at the NSW PSSA level, congratulations and good luck. My best wishes to you all for a successful trial. TRIAL FORMAT The trial today will take the form of games and/or skills sessions. Each student will participate in a number of drills and/or play a number of games determined by the selectors. The emphasis is on choosing the 12 best suitable students to represent MacKillop at the NSW PSSA Softball State Carnival providing the pathway for students to PSSA level. Team members will be evaluated throughout the day by team managers, external Softball representatives and the MacKillop team managers. Glen Crawford - St Anthony s Picton SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS Students are to use adequate sun protection, e.g. an SPF20+, broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen, reapplied regularly and wear a hat. Spectators and non-participating players are to be instructed to remain outside the diamonds and in the shade where possible. Non-participating players remain in the cage and spectators on the hill during play. Students must remove jewellery and other ornaments likely to cause injury. Students must also cut or tape long fingernails. Students are to be instructed not to enter the diamond without their protective gear whilst play is in progress. All batters, base runners and junior base coaches under 18 must wear helmets. Catchers are to wear helmets, face masks with throat protectors, body protectors and leggings. While catchers are taking warm up pitches from the pitching plate or in the warm-up area, he/she must have on all the above protective equipment. Any other member of a team, including officials, must wear a helmet, mask and throat protector while receiving warm up pitches from the pitcher s plate. It is recommended that players wear mouth guards especially infield players Warm-up and cool-down are vital elements in preventing injury and should be included before and after all training and competition sessions. Stretching activities performed in the warm-up should move the muscles through the full range of movement to be performed during the session and be interspersed throughout the warm-up. Students are to consume water prior to and during the game to prevent dehydration. If the conditions are very hot, fluid intake may need to be more frequent. CODE OF CONDUCT Young people involved in sport have a right to participate in a safe and supportive environment. The goals of the game are to have fun and improve skills. Be modest in success and generous in defeat. Play for the fun of it. Play by the rules and always respect the decisions of officials. Make no criticism either by word or gesture. Deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent or player is not acceptable or permitted in any sport. Be a good sport. Applaud good performance and efforts from all individuals and teams. Congratulate all participants on their performance regardless of the game s outcome. Condemn unsporting behaviour and promote respect for opponents. Condemn the use of violence in any form. Respect the rights, dignity of worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion. Place the safety and welfare of the participants above all else. All school sport events are alcohol and smoke free zones.
