Keynote Speakers As a clinical psychologist, works with many organisations, schools and communities in Australia and internationally, specialising in the wellbeing of people, teams and families. He is a Fellow of the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Learning and Educational Development at the University of Melbourne. SPIRIT OF LEARNING 2016 Steve Francis Andrew has recently been the scientific consultant for the ABC on a 5 episode series called Whatever: the science of the teenage brain. He has also been a principal consultant to the national drug prevention strategy REDI, the ABC on children s television shows, is an Ambassador for Mind Matters and is a member of the National Coalition Against Bullying. The concept of resilience offers a coherent framework for the creation of schools that are sensitive to the developmental needs of young people and their teachers. As Andrew describes, resilience is the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through the pitfalls of life - to rise above adversity and obstacles. Steve led a number of Queensland schools from a one teacher school through to a large metropolitan school and an international school in Hong Kong. Steve presents at education conferences across Australia and internationally and was recently a guest education expert on the Today Show. Giving effective feedback Session 2: 11.15am 12.30pm Keynote Workshop This workshop will give participants an opportunity to work closer with Andrew and unpack his keynote presentation. Beyond the Friday spelling test: Strategies for teaching spelling (3-10) Catherine Black Spelling is a highly valued skill and a necessary tool for successful writing. Too often, however, it is simply tested rather than taught. This workshop examines common approaches to spelling, the pitfalls of these approaches, and better spelling practices. The four spelling knowledges Phonological, Morphemic, Etymological and Visual are explained. The workshop also outlines some basic principles of spelling instruction, and a number of practical strategies for the teaching of spelling. Numeracy activators across the KLAs: a foundation for STEM (7-12) Rob Proffit-White High school students are losing the ability to transfer numeracy into many subjects eg Science, SOSE, HPE, Design Technology. This workshop will show evidence based activities and processes to help teachers of all subjects to support their students in becoming more confident with the everyday numeracy capabilities and demands. How to use ACARA to plan a unit outline and create learning goals (7-12) Sasha McDonald The Australian Curriculum website and C2C documents can be overwhelming for teachers attempting to plan units, assessment and lessons. With a plethora of information and resources, it can be a time consuming task to scan and read all of the available information. This workshop will demonstrate how to navigate the ACARA website, and where to find the key material needed for curriculum planning. We will also discuss how to create learning goals that link to the descriptors and standards of each unit. How to give effective feedback on drafts (4 12) - Sean Loriaux Practical strategies to encourage higher-order thinking through the drafting process in all subject areas in Primary and Secondary. ICTs: Invigorating and Creative Teaching Luke Fallon Does using technology in the classroom scare you? A practical session that looks at effective methods for using technology to create engaging learning experiences. Session 3: 1.30pm 2.45pm Thinking Skills Warm-ups Katie McGuire This session will provide you with practical thinking skill warm-ups and formative assessment ideas. You will learn how to develop higher-order thinking questions that can assist you in creating engaging and challenging learning experiences to for any subject area or concept. These warm-up and assessment ideas can be transferred into your classroom as soon as you return to school. Developing Pro-social skills (P-9) Graham Nunn Through games, Graham Nunn will demonstrate how the 5 skills of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-control, self-motivation, empathy and managing relationships) can be effectively taught and how students can learn the skills and values necessary to learning self-directed behaviour. Practical reading tips and tricks - Amanda Wicks Explore a range of targeted strategies to develop students reading and comprehension skills. Participants will explore QAR and practical strategies to improve students reading success.

Promoting critical thinking and a growth mindset in numeracy Robin Proffit-White Workshop specifically designed for BETA where delegates will see how quickly and easily we can instill the growth mindset in all our students. This is a must for teachers who want to prepare their students to be confident communicators of mathematics. A-Z of Senior Schooling (10-12) Mitch Fallon This session will take a look at all the complexities of teaching in the senior school. From R3 to R6, monitoring to verification and from QCS to QCAA, you will walk away form this session with a better understanding of what is required when teaching senior classes. How boys learn Michelle Cubis A workshop providing a conceptual framework and practical strategies for teachers to improve levels of engagement for boys in the classroom. Money Smart (P-10) Robyn Bergmansons Knowing how to manage money is one of the most important and challenging features of everyday life. The Money Smart Teaching program is a comprehensive strategy to develop consumer and financial literacy capabilities in young people throughout their schooling. Session 4: 3.00 4.15pm Thinking Skills Warm-ups Katie McGuire This session will provide you with practical thinking skill warm-ups and formative assessment ideas. You will learn how to develop higher-order thinking questions that can assist you in creating engaging and challenging learning experiences to for any subject area or concept. These warm-up and assessment ideas can be transferred into your classroom as soon as you return to school. Building Positive Relationships with Students Michelle Cubis The session will also explore classroom management plans, focusing on acknowledgment and correction plans to improve student behaviour. Participants can bring a USB to the session to receive a number of visual support templates for immediate use in the classroom. Reading is Thinking: The explicit teaching of comprehension matters Amanda Wicks Practical strategies to improve student comprehension in whole class or small group literacy rotations. Essential Maths Warm Ups (P-10) - Peter Carmichael & Jennifer Carmichael A look at how to practise and deepen students' ability with and disposition towards Number and Place Value. This session connects to the 'big ideas' lying behind the Australian Curriculum, while providing practical, adaptable activities and games for classroom use. Literacy skills in high school outside of the English classroom (7-12) Sasha McDonald This session aims to offer attendees a range of practical strategies, lesson segments, and scaffolding tools to incorporate into the Junior Secondary classroom in order to target and enhance the literacy capabilities of students. With a clear focus on building students literacy capacity in the Australian Curriculum standards and descriptors, it has become increasingly important to embed a range of skills and drills into everyday practice that enables a wide range of students to engage with the content. Some of these activities are designed to support the engagement of students with lower literacy skills, enabling them to remain engaged in a subject that relies heavily on reading and writing abilities. At the other end of the achievement gap, this presentation will also explain how to use certain activities to further extend students in the Upper Bands of the class, challenging them to improve the quality of their written responses, and read more difficult texts. ICT s in the Classroom: Invigorating & Creative Teaching - Luke Fallon Does using technology in the classroom scare you? A practical session that looks at effective methods for using technology to create engaging learning experiences. Practical strategies for working with students with disabilities Susan Richard & Catherin Dunlop This presentation explores practical aspects of curriculum and behaviour expectations that are specific to working with students who require specific adjustments to the curriculum to maximise their learning outcomes. Sunday 1 st May 8.30 11.30am Keynote: Increasing WORK-LIFE Satisfaction in School - Steve Francis Working in schools can be challenging - especially as a beginning teacher. It is vital that staff in schools get satisfaction from the important work we do. In this session experienced Principal Steve Francis provides practical advice for staff in schools to improve their work - life balance. Reducing teacher stress and burnout are vital but won't happen by magic. You'll still occasionally feel like you are beating your head against a wall - but hopefully less often.
