Course Description The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the fundamentals of how to identify, formulate and analyze problems based on the knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering by using modern computing techniques. Concepts gained will pave the way to more advanced problem framing and selection of appropriate programming computing approaches. Prerequisite: MATH 2413. Course Learning Outcomes Develop basic problem solving skills Develop experience in identifying and formulating a solution to an engineering problem using a software tool Produce effective plot of numerical data using Excel/MATLAB software. Apply MATLAB/Excel software skills to mathematical and engineering problems. Implement the computing techniques chosen to solve engineering problems. Use appropriate software tools Excel/MATLAB for solving engineering problems. Write programs in MATLAB to solve and analyze basic engineering problems. Utilize spreadsheet tools to enhance engineering problem solving skills. Minimal Technical Skills Needed COURSE REQUIREMENTS Working knowledge and basic skills using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Instructional Methods The instructional methods in this course include; lectures, class discussion, written assignments, problem solving, and simulation assignments using MS Excel and MATLAB software. Attendance is a requirement for this course. The instructor will take attendance at each class. GRADING The final course grade is based on 100 possible points (as described below in Assessments) and will be calculated based on the following grading scale: Grading Scale: A=90-100 points B=80-89 Points C=70-79 Points D=60-69 points F=less than 60 points Assessments The following assessments will be performed throughout this course to assess individual progress toward achievement of course learning outcomes. The final course grade will be calculated based on the following assessments: Assessment task Weight Homework 20 % Quizzes 10 % Attendance and Participation 10% Midterm Exam I 15 % Midterm Exam II 15% Final Exam 30 % Homework Assignments: Homework Assignments are due at the beginning of class, delivered in the appropriate drop box. No late submissions will be accepted. Some homework assignments will include the submission of simulation files. Quizzes There will be four quizzes during the semester. The quiz will be given at the end of the class. The exact dates are listed in the syllabus. Each quiz will be on the material covered in the previous week. Quizzes may be either written or performed on your computer Participation and Attendance: Students participation and full attendance are required in this course. Students are expected to be prepared for every class. Student will receive full mark if he attends all classes and participates during class sessions. Midterm Exams: There will be two-midterm exams during the course. All exams are closed book. NO electronic devices will be allowed during the exams. Exams will be written and performed on computer. Final Exam. The final exam will be comprehensive.
