Edition 34 21 September 2016 HIGHLIGHT A warm welcome to our new Spanish Chapter head We are very proud to welcome Jeroen De Roeck (MGM 2015) as our Chapter Head for Spain. Jeroen recently moved to Barcelona for his new job but wants to keep the strong connection to the Vlerick network, even abroad. "I feel truly honoured to receive this opportunity. As Chapter Head in Spain, I wish to focus on increasing and improving the internationalization of the Vlerick Experience." We invite all alumni residing in or visiting Spain to get in touch with Jeroen and look forward to welcoming you at one of the upcoming events!

UPCOMING EVENTS 06 OCT 07 OCT Vlerick Sales Conference: Selling in the Digital Era Location: Ghent, Belgium Vlerick Alumni and friends after work in Amsterdam Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands 14 OCT 17 OCT Vlerick Alumni Sailing Cup 2016 Location: Sint-Annaland, The Netherlands Education in times of powerlessness, an allegory of the doubt Location: Brussels, Belgium ALL ALUMNI EVENTS NEWS ALUMNI The business of art... and the art of business Last week, our alumni were invited to the newly renovated gallery Desmet in Brussels where 4 renowned art experts and investors took the stage. Our Platinum members were even able to enjoy an exclusive personal tour at the gallery by host Tobias Desmet before the opening of the event. The keynote speakers tackled some tricky questions on the business of art such as: Is art a safe investment? How does the business of art work? Which period or type of art should you buy? At the end of the evening, our alumni

were definitely enlightened and some were even inspired to start (or further expand) their art collection. The Economic impact of migration: the main driver behind the Brexit by Theo Francken On the 8th of September, we had the pleasure to invite Secretary of State Theo Francken in Leuven. A fully booked event showed the interest of our Alumni in this topic and speaker. Theo Francken, Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, shared his critical opinion on migration which has been the political vehicle that caused the Brexit. He also reflected on the logic and illogic of the motivations of the Brexit voters. The lecture triggered quite some interesting discussions and questions which were addressed during the Q&A. The evening was closed off with a reception during which our alumni could further discuss the topic.

Online shopping: also for diamonds? Steven Boelens parents had a plant and flower business which is how young Steven became interested in products that are authentic, tangible and natural. "My year at Vlerick (Masters in Marketing Management, 2001) was 'work hard, play hard'. Vlerick is the ideal environment for entrepreneurial stimulation and networking an environment that inspires you to be innovative and to create something from scratch." Sounds like planting a seed... and growing it into a flourishing business! Today, Steven is the co-founder of Baunat Diamonds, an Antwerpbased company that sells high-quality diamond jewellery worldwide. They ve chosen to avoid the middleman and offer their collections online. But that approach immediately poses major challenges in a business in which customers want to see and feel their products and to buy from people they trust. Take a look at Steven's story >
