Special arrangements may be made for classroom use by evening students. The Learning Assistance Center (LAC) is also available for completing assignments. Check with the instructor as to using the LAC for this program. ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES Each student will spend at least two hours per week preparing for class. Because many assignments are prepared during class time, absences may adversely affect the final grade in the class. Students will be dropped if they miss more than 20 % of the classes before the drop date. Tardies and leaving early will count as one half of an absence. Fall and Spring 15-week Semesters Class Meetings Maximum absences before being dropped One per week 2 Two per week 4 Participation in class lectures and discussion is both appreciated and necessary for better learning. The student is expected to be prepared for class (i.e. have homework ready to turn in and have needed materials).
Students are also expected to take care of the equipment in the classroom. PLEASE DO NOT BRING FOOD, DRINKS, OR UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS INTO THE CLASSROOM. Students will be given an opportunity to evaluate the course and the method of presentation at the end of the semester. It is the student's responsibility to withdraw from a course if circumstances occur that could prevent the student from successfully completing that course. Students should notify instructor of decision to withdraw and must not expect nor assume the instructor will complete the paperwork for the student. The instructor will complete required paperwork only if the instructor decides to drop a student for cause. Failure to notify instructor of withdrawal could result in the student failing the course. Please note that changes in the Texas Education Code state that students enrolling for the first time in a Texas public institution of higher education in the fall of 2007 or after, will not be permitted to withdraw from more than a total of six courses (no minimum number of credit hours on each course) in which the student is officially enrolled during the student's period of undergraduate study at all such institutions (this includes any course a transfer student has dropped at another institution of higher education). See http://www.brazosport.cc.tx.us/curstu.html for more information. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY TESTING A. TESTS - 20% Tests 20% Timed Writings 20% Daily Grades 20% Perfect Lines 20% Final Exam 20% 100% Written tests based on rules, techniques, and computer operation. Grading will be based on the number of errors found in the graded problems based on 100 points. If a test includes a keyboarding problem, ten (10) points will be subtracted for each uncorrected error, and ten (10) points for any format error found on a problem. B. TIMED WRITINGS - 20% Students will have frequent opportunities to prove skill in timed writings. The grade is determined by the AVERAGE of the best six timed writings (3-three minute and 3-five minute) taken during the semester. If a student does not turn in at least 3 three-minute and 3 five-minute timed writings, the student will receive a ZERO for any timed writing not turned in. Net words a minute (NWAM) will be used for computing the final score on individual timed writings. Two points will be deducted for errors 1-5. Four points will be taken off for errors 6-10. The maximum number of errors allowed will be 10 errors. (No credit will be given for a paper with more than 10 errors.) Example: GWAM 68 Errors 5 @ 2-10 Errors 2 @ 4-8 50 NWAM
The final grade will be based on the scale shown in Addendum A. C. DAILY GRADES -20% Exercises will be assigned after the keyboard has been covered. Grading will be based on 10 points-off-per-error and 10 points off / (PER) attempt. All daily grades will be averaged together to comprise 20% of the total class grade. D. PERFECT LINES -20% Drill lines will be assigned during and after the keyboard has been covered. The student shall place a check mark at the end of each line keyed perfectly and write the number of perfect lines at the top of the page. Lines that are perfect will be tallied throughout the semester for one cumulative grade based on Addendum B. E. FINAL EXAM - 20% A final exam will be given which will be approximately two hours in length. The test will include rules, techniques, computer operations and a five minute timed writing. MAKE-UP POLICY There will be no make-up tests given. If a student misses one test, the grade on the final exam will be put in place of the test grade. If more than one test is missed, a grade of zero will be given for all but the first test. Perfect Lines and Timed Writings are due on date assigned and CANNOT be made up following an absence. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Speed and Accuracy Each student will keep track of his/her individual speed and accuracy development. Students will participate in a diagnostic drill program (perfect lines). Students are also encouraged to discuss any speed or accuracy problems with the instructor. Proofreading Students will be responsible for the accuracy of documents which includes content, mechanics, and format of the document. Students should check for misspelled words, punctuation, capitalization, as well as the arrangement of the document on the page. The instructor is available if there are any questions. Using the Software Since the software is what controls the computer, the student will be responsible for learning the commands for each software that is used. Students are encouraged to use the reference guide and the command summary for Word for Windows that are in the keyboarding textbook and manual. Please notify the instructor if there are any software or hardware problems.
