INTRODUCTION Welcome to Camp America s International Youth Leadership Award (IYLA) Scheme and a new concept in leadership. IYLA is a preparatory course that combines the Camp America cultural exchange experience with concepts of leadership development working with partnership with the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). These concepts are based on sound principles that are applicable and transferable to just about any career, especially fields working with children, youth work, educational work or working with others. As a participant on the programme, you will be prepared as soon as you land in America to put these fantastic principles into practice at camp. This makes your application extremely attractive to GSUSA camps while greatly enhancing your Camp America and life experiences. At the end of the programme, you will gain a certificate of participation, have good solid experience and will have taken part in a truly unique practical training programme. As well as this, you will have a real enhancement to your CV, have grown in confidence, gained valuable skills and had a unique and FUN experience. The subject of leadership is well documented with employers, professionals and educators. Leadership qualities are extremely important both personally and professionally. Schools, universities and organisations seek individuals who display leadership attributes, and who are able to help others grow and achieve their goals and aspirations. WHAT EXACTLY IS LEADERSHIP? When you mention the world leader people often think of individuals in high positions, such as a president or prime minister or a CEO of a public company, like Richard Branson. However, we see leadership as a more holistic term, emphasising positive relationships, teamwork, community involvement, personal and group development and social change. Research on what leadership

shows that it is about the qualities that one has rather than a specific role on function. In this sense, it is viewed as a means towards an end: to make a difference in the world. The Camp America IYLA scheme asks its leaders to become active participants and learners, focusing on positive leadership skills, attributes and behaviours. This kind of leadership development, we believe, helps adults empower young people to achieve their full potential. We seek to encourage young people and children to take an active role in their personal and leadership development with the help of supportive adults, like you. By working with organisations such as Camp America and the global scouting movement we can all make a difference in the world. HOW DO YOU DEVELOP LEADERS? There are many different theories on how you develop leaders and sometimes you hear statements like leaders are born not made. However, there are practical formulas that have been produced to help explain leadership development. For example, GSUSA has developed a formula based on three keys to leadership that form the basis for all activities: Using these three concepts, there are fifteen objectives or outcomes of the New Girl Scout Leadership Experience: DISCOVER Develop a strong sense of self Hold positive values Gain practical life skills Seek challenges in the world Think critically CONNECT Make healthy relationships Promote cooperation and team building Resolve conflicts Advance diversity in a multicultural world Feel connected to communities, both locally and globally TAKE ACTION Identify community needs Sole problems resourcefully Advocate for themselves and others both locally and globally

Educate and inspire others to act Feel empowered to make a difference in the world DEVEOPING THE LEADER IN YOU THROUGH THE CAMP AMERICA EXPERIENCE Working in association with the Girl Scouts of the USA Camp America has developed the International Youth Leadership Award Programme which provides training (through open learning and online support and facilitation) to ensure your application is one-step ahead of the rest by providing essential skills that will enhance your application and give you a better chance of placement. By taking the course, you ll not only be ready for a summer of a Girl Scout camp in the USA, but will be equipped with real, useful life skills that you will use for years to come. The course closely follows the New Girl Scout Leadership Experience and delivers the 15 core objectives as well as modules on: How to build teams and promote cooperation How to educate and inspire others to act How to motivate and manage groups How to resolve conflicts professionally An introduction to Child Protection, risk management and safer working practices Developing your understanding of equality, diversity and cultural awareness The day to say running of a summer camp How to survive the challengers and delights of camp Self-reflection, goal setting and confidence building And essential camp counselling secrets

HOW DO WE DO THIS AND HELP YOU IN YOUR LEADERSHIP JOURNEY? As participant on the IYLA programme you will receive: A specially designed final preparation training in London (date TBC 2019) which brings together all aspects of the Camp America Programme with a special emphasis on the IYLA journey and gives participants a chance to meet each other before setting off for their extraordinary summer adventures. This training includes fun activities in a supportive environment as well as practical advice and guidance that can be used on camp and when working with young people. Comprehensive learning materials that will guide you through the Discover + Connect + Take Action = Leadership model. Online course support and advice from professional trainers and coaches Access to an online support forum to post ideas, insights, activities and success stories for all to share. As an IYLA participant on the Camp America Programme, you will receive an exclusive invitation to a recruitment event in London on Saturday 26 th January 2019! Camp America will fly Girl Scout Camp Directors to London from the USA with the intention to hire staff on the spot exclusively from the IYLA Programme. If you can t make the January even, don t worry. Participation on the course will ensure that your application gets attention right through the entire placement season.
