Open Access Pilot in FP7 EC requiresgrant recipients in seven areas to "deposit peer reviewed research articles or final manuscripts resulting from their FP7 projectsinto an online repositoryandmake their best efforts to ensure open access to these articles". Applied in grant agreements since Aug 2008; covers ca. 20% of FP7 budget Applies to seven areas of FP7: 6 month embargo: Health, Energy, Environment, Information & Communication Technology (Cognitive systems/robotics), Research infrastructures (einfrastructures) 12 month embargo: Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities and Science in Society

Open Access Pilot in FP7 Legal foundation: Special Clause 39, Grant Agreement: deposit of an electronic copy (published version or final manuscript) in an institutional or subject-based repository at moment of publication. best efforts to ensure that this electronic copy becomes available open access (freely and electronically available to anyone): immediately if the publication is published "open access", or within 6 or 12 months of publication, depending on area

ERC Guidelines on OA Published in December 2007 The ERC requires that all peer-reviewed publications from ERCfunded research projects be deposited on publication into an appropriate research repository where available, such as PubMed Central, ArXivor an institutional repository, and subsequently made Open Access within 6 months of publication. The ERC considers essential that primary data -which in the life sciences for example could comprise data such as nucleotide/protein sequences, macromolecular atomic coordinates and anonymized epidemiological data -are deposited to the relevant databases as soon as possible, preferably immediately after publication and in any case not later than 6 months after the date of publication. The ERC is keenly aware of the desirability to shorten the period between publication and open access beyond the currently accepted standard of 6 months.

European Helpdesk Promote FP7-pilot and ERC OA guidelines National Open Access Liaison Offices (27 countries) Provide OA toolkits for Researchers Institutions Setup 24/7 portal for deposit, search of OA publications Liaison with Other European OA initiatives Publishers CRIS systems
