Key Points Developing skills in young athletes is certainly a key role of the coach. More importantly, in Catholic Youth Athletics we are committed to evangelizing young people and furthering the mission of the Church Sports experiences that are firmly rooted in the Catholic faith tradition incorporate: o Prayer o Encouragement to attend Mass and faith formation opportunities o The value of fair play o Recognition of the differing gifts that each team member brings, regardless of their skill level o Christian virtues and character development Facilitator Instructions Review the slide noting the key point above. We will explore these notions in more detail in the following slides. Coaches Orientation, June 2015 Revised Version Page 4
Read the slide. Ask: How do you feel about coming in 5 th and last among Christian churches in the U.S.A.? Say: All the research points to the fact that we Catholics have our work cut out for us, and that the usual stuff of Mass and religion classes is a must but not nearly enough. Add: Catholic Youth Athletics can be a key turning point to help address the critical concerns we see here and in the next two slides. Coaches Orientation, June 2015 Revised Version Page 5
Read the slide and proceed to the next one. Coaches Orientation, June 2015 Revised Version Page 6
Review the slide. Say: What we need today is a full-court press, faith-wise. If our young people are having their faith reinforced at home, on athletics fields, in school, in classes, on retreats, and in youth ministry programs, it s way more likely to stick. Note that coaches who live their faith on the field and on the court can help young people be more engaged in their faith. Ask participants for any quick examples from their own experience. Key Points Coaches in Catholic Youth Athletics are first and foremost committed to their faith. Coaches in Catholic Youth Athletics care deeply about the holistic development of their athletes body, mind and spirit. Facilitator Instructions Review the Key Points above Ask the participants to rate themselves on a scale of 1-10 (quietly, in their own minds, not for sharing) on the qualities of the Catholic Coach. Give just 15-20 seconds for this exercise. Ask the participants to consider how they might improve, again, in their own minds, not for sharing. Give just 15-20 seconds for this exercise. Review the 3 goals. Provide personal examples of each and/or ask for personal examples from the participants some ideas below: o Discipleship: In addition to teaching skills, a coach as minister also will ask players to connect what they learn in CCD to their sport; share stories of how faith has helped you be a better player, coach and person; assist players in understanding their athletic ability as a gift from God; share an insight from Sunday s homily that connects with what they do on the field or court. o Participation: Encourage family participation in Sunday Eucharist; Encourage participation in your parish s intergenerational faith formation. o Growth: Showing interest in the whole child, not just the athlete. Encouraging a focus on their school work; knowing the families and their particular needs; having team service projects. Coaches Orientation, June 2015 Revised Version Page 10

Key Points Coaches are not expected to be trained as catechists or youth ministers. The parish and the Archdiocese will provide the resources they need. Facilitator Instructions Read the slide. Share the Key Points above. Share with them that each parish is on their own schedule as to when to implement the role of the Spiritual Liaison the deadline for all parishes to have one in place is March 2015. If you want resources now the Archdiocese will be setting up a Resource Page which will include prayers to use with your youth. Coaches Orientation, June 2015 Revised Version Page 15
Ask the participants to divide into groups of three. Once they have done so ask the participants to respond to the prompt in the first bullet point. Tell them they have 15 minutes for this conversation. When the 15 minutes are up, ask the groups to share one or two ideas from their small group conversation with the larger group. You may need to call on each group if they do not volunteer on their own. (It would be a best practice to capture their ideas on newsprint and distribute to all coaches later) (this process is also 15 minutes). Thank them for their participation and ideas and move to the next slide. Coaches Orientation, June 2015 Revised Version Page 16
Distribute the Code of Conduct (or refer them to it if you provided it earlier). Ask them to read it silently. Ask for clarifying questions - and respond appropriately. Coaches Orientation, June 2015 Revised Version Page 17
