Welcome to KS4 Induction Evening 8 th September 2016
Not here to tell you how to bring up your children
Challenging times More challenge English and Maths results on the gate Comparison between schools becoming more difficult GCSE increasingly challenging Government have recognised that schools are going to see volatility in results for the next few years Predictions from KS2 data based on old GCSE exam system. Progress becomes difficult to measure Majority of Subjects measures 9-1
GCSE 71 % 5+ A*-C grades including En & Ma 78 % 5+ higher grades 100% of all students gained GCSE passes A*-A 28% EBAC 46% A level 99.6% pass rate which was an similar to last year The number of grades at A* or C 75%
English and Maths Graded 9 1 All Other GCSEs Graded A*-G 9 Highest pass 1- Lowest pass 9 top 3% of students A* Highest pass G- Lowest pass A* top 6.6% of students (2015)
Impact of change Turbulence in the system appears to have had the least impact on the most able Beginning to see a recalibration of examination performance The government have made it clear that they want a toughening up of the system More challenging courses are being introduced Reduction in the currency of equivalent qualifications Introduction of the assessment of spelling punctuation and grammar in many subjects The reduction in course work and controlled assessment Removal of modular exams
I asked parents what guidance would they would give other parents
Parents said Don t believe them when they say they have no homework 25 exams over a 4 week period is a tough ask for a 15 year old Revision isn t checking your e-mail, texting friends and raiding the fridge The support given by SEN was very helpful I am not surprised he failed Maths, but I am disappointed, it will be a mill-stone at college Do what you have to do,. lock down, bribery, quarantine, in the end they have to do the exam Although I am please she is not doing as much course work, with her brother at least I knew he was getting credit for his work over the year. The Year 10 exams were the kick up the backside he needed, he would have done better if he worked as hard in Year 10 as he did in 11 Ration the X Box, Wii and mobile, they are all distractions
I asked student what guidance they would give other students
Student said I was in groups with different people that was strange. The expectations from home were high. Know one is going to do it for you. My results were OK in Year 9 but now know I need to work harder. Get organised Although I would tell my Mum there was no homework, in truth there was always something to do, I should have learnt this lesson earlier Hit the past papers The work moves on at such a speed miss a week and it can be like coming back to a different subject. I remembered you said it would go in a heartbeat and it has I did not do the work I should have done and my marks reflect this. I did not attend the revision sessions - mistake.
How can I help my child be successful? Focus on progress Focus and reward effort growth mindset Focus on useful questions What do you need to do to improve? Encourage useful thinking about the future Encourage effective learning strategies Regular effective revision
This is not a choice Research shows that students who focus on improving their learning get better grades than students who only focus on passing their examinations.

Certificates can be collected in person later Access arrangements Mrs Rowsell (SENCO)
The exam system Absence from an exam inform the school as soon as possible, though the school will try to make contact. An enhanced grade may be awarded if 50% of the course assessment completed and absence is caused by major illness or event. Special consideration not a safety net! Maximum is 5% of marks on a paper in question in extreme circumstances. Mostly 2% - 3% for illness, injury or incident.
Over the course of a school year, students in Years 10 to 13 are issued with several documents about exam entries. These documents will give details such as the subject, tier or level of entry, date and time of exam and the students unique candidate number which will need to go onto all exam papers. Students have a responsibility to share with their parents all exam information that they receive during a school year as a means of incorporating parents into the exam preparation process. Any possible queries about entries can then be addressed to the relevant subject teachers as soon as possible after receiving exam entry information.
Help is at hand! Each exam board has useful areas to aid students and parents in understanding the examinations and assessment system. http://www.ocr.org.uk/ http://www.aqa.org.uk/student-support http://www.edexcel.com/i-ama/student/pages/home.aspx
